Just ... hello really.

I consider myself a bit of an oldie but there might be people still here who were posting from the very start (circa 2000/01 ish?).

I sometimes wonder what it would be like to go back 10-12 years on Mumsnet. Would it look significantly different? I remember lots of scandals about the changing of the appearance of the site. I guess there would be fewer adverts, sliders and pop-ups?

Woud we still have lots of threads headed like this
MamaGwhereareyou**

Hot topics of conversation might be baby modelling and the MMR. I can't honestly remember.

What do you recall about the early days of MN if you were here then?

Agree Abs, I never admit to being a Mumsnetter and would hate to be outed, if I refer to an interesting topic that I first read about on Mumsnet I usually say it was something I read in the paper or very occasionally I might say something about 'saw online'. I had a lot of success on the Low Carb Bootcamp this year and a few friends asked me where I found all the information etc & I made up a few library book titles Blush.

And this is the only social media I use, I don't use FB, WhatsApp or anything else (am really quite a Luddite). In fact for years I hung out on the threads about who needs a mobile phone and how they were not at all necessary although I do have one now and an iPad although can barely understand how to use it Grin. I don't even shop on line & can remember when there was one of the first charity appeals on Mumsnet asking for an address to send a cheque to as I didn't understand how to transfer money Blush never got a reply.

Joined in 2006 when I had my son. I've name changed since though and always been more of a lurker than a poster.

I remember the lovely lulumama who was wonderfully supportive to me when I had my daughter in 2008, is she still here? She was a midwife. I also really liked Trampypants (sp?)

Mookatron · 20/09/2018 15:18

I joined in 2006 I think, under a different name (plantsitter). Is mouldies still going?

AbsintheFriends yes I'm a secret user too. I have recommended the site to the odd person down the years, people who I thought might benefit, but usually to a fairly blank or negative reception so I don't any more.

Does anyone else remember mamadadawahwah - her threads always ended up in a huge row!

mathanxiety · 20/09/2018 17:14

Oh, and one person whose name escapes me but was renowned on MN for saying "it's just words on a screen..." in answer to any arguments/conflict/disagreements etc

ThingintheAttic that was ScottishMummy - she posted in haiku-esque style...

mathanxiety · 20/09/2018 17:16

Another who has been here at least since I have is SolidGoldBrass, aka SGB and maybe there are a few more aliases.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 20/09/2018 17:44

I also agree about Dittany.
Love the bones of her.

Threads used to be side-splittingly funny. Ordinary women, going about their ordinary lives, being so bloody funny.

Now, people seem to think they have to talk about sex or shit to be funny. Sad

Holidayshopping · 20/09/2018 17:52

La Queen as well, or was it Le Queen?

Quite a prolific poster, but was outed either on here (or the other site) for claiming to have a PhD in English when she didn’t!

Munchmallow · 20/09/2018 17:53

I joined a bit later, in 2009 but lurked for a couple of years before that.

Mumsnet (and particularly Shineoncrazydiamond with her hilarious threads) got me through some dark times.

I won't forget the lovely Jux who was so kind to me on one thread when I first started posting and Soupdragon who gave me a telling off on another one!

I often think about Riven, Gentleotter, scottishmummy, Greensleeves. And of course Zombie, Catthiefkeith, Biscuitsandbandages and the lovely MNetter who fostered a drug dependent baby then she herself very sadly died - I'm so sorry I can't remember her name Sad

I name change quite often as I'm a bit of a blabbermouth!

UrsulaPandress · 20/09/2018 17:57

2009 but I had to reregister due to email issues so can't access my previous account.

It was mouldies being reported in the Telegraph that brought me here and I was hooked by If MN were miners and the Riven v Cameron event.

AbsintheFriends · 20/09/2018 18:08

Ragwort that's me exactly. 'I was reading something somewhere...' But it's surprising how often I use that excuse - so many discussion-worthy topics come from here!

Agatha - same here. It's like the Freemasons. You try a tentative secret handshake, but if you get no response you know not to push it Grin

ShowOfHands · 20/09/2018 18:35

@OvO you're automatically my favourite oldie for remembering my proper name. You've made an old woman v happy. Was your win the year you were something like OvOntToSuckYourBlood or maybe BiteYourNeck? I remember voting for you and reading your name in a terrible accent!

ShowOfHands · 20/09/2018 18:37

I know the first year I won was a closely fought contest between me and VinegarigamorTits...

hendricksy · 20/09/2018 18:38

I joined about 2003 .. I remember COD and the parties !! Was a nice gentle place !

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 20/09/2018 18:40

I joined in 2003 or 2004 but lurked for a long time.

Devilishpyjamas · 20/09/2018 18:44

Lou33 - I forgot about her. She’s the poster who has to run from the tsunami?

Devilishpyjamas · 20/09/2018 18:45

*had - my fat fingers have got worse over the years

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 20/09/2018 18:45

Xenia is still here and the fish can occasionally be spotted under an alias. I still make MarsLady's lemon drizzle cake.

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 20/09/2018 18:50

2007 vintage here. I feel like a bit of a traitor saying this, but TBH I prefer it now the site is bigger and more anonymous. I've never wanted to be "known", not even just on the boards, and now it's bigger I feel I need to namechange less frequently.

I still make Soupy's flapjacks and SuzyWong's brownies though. And I'd love to know how the unstintingly lovely Marina is nowadays.

A580Hojas · 20/09/2018 19:17

For me the most noticeable difference is that everything felt more real in 2006. So, yes, there were some infamous trolls but they were few and far between. There wasn't the sense that 50% of active conversations was fake.

I miss the quiche threads even though I was never a member of any quiche! It's just that it was nice to know that people were forming friendships on here, whether they remained online or progressed to real life connections.

nipersvest · 20/09/2018 19:24

I joined in 2002, have had a few different user names and I don't post much these days as my kids are older now. It was the era of everyone fawning over Cod/iCod, and I remember the infamous 'UCM is that you?' name change faux pas! .

Didn't a bunch of well known mnetters all flounce and start their own forum back then?

Samcro · 20/09/2018 19:24

Mummylin, use to love the song game, and word one.
Still talk to biggitdad

BIWI · 20/09/2018 19:25

Aw @PolkadotsAndMoonbeams - I'm amazed that you remembered that! Grin

I joined in 2006, initially with a 'mum' name, before I realised the error of my ways. Then posted for a while as BecauseImWorthIt, until eventually shortened it - much easier to type, and people were referring to me as BIWI anyway!

It was a much nicer place in some ways, but it was also a much cliquier place - the frequent call to 'MSN' was really irritating and made it clear to anyone that you weren't amongst the chosen few. And Moldiegate brought all that to a head, Christmas 2008.

I used to go to meet ups, and met some lovely MNetters, but pulled way back when there was a controversy about a MNetter I knew, who was accused of stealing money from people. I realised that it was probably unwise to think I really knew people, just because I'd met them - but also I didn't know who to believe. So that was when I pulled right back from face-to-face involvement.

I miss the days when we knew MNHQ too - they used to come along to meet ups as well. Now, they're all a bit distant. But that's inevitable now the site is the size it is.
