You've only got space for 2 of 3: washing machine, tumble dryer, and dishwasher. Which 2 would you have?

We've only got space for 2 appliances. Currently have a washing machine and dishwasher but keep thinking we would like a tumble dryer.

Would you rather keep the dishwasher, or swap for a tumble dryer?

Wow, I'm a bit surprised by the replies. I have a washer and a dryer, both of which I wouldn't be without. I don't even use my dryer all the time either, its windy but dry here today so the clothes are hung outside. In the winter though I would absolutely hate to have clothes hung about everywhere, looks alot messier than a few plates on the side. Saying that, i wash up as I go then wash the last bits as soon as I've eaten. Takes much less time than hanging loads of washing. Also, when hung just on a maiden/airer they take ages to dry and then smell funny. I've never had a dishwasher and have absolutely no want for one either. I can see that they're handy and I guess if you're used to one you wouldn't want to be without one but there's no doubts which of the two I'd choose.

Ohyesiam · 18/09/2018 13:40

I’ve never had a tumble dryer, and it’s worked for my family of4. Live on southwest too, so it’s often wet.
But we have a tiny south facing porch that helps and I’d probably be stuck without it.
Go on Which? To lol up combined wager driers?

AmaDablam · 18/09/2018 13:42

In the fortunate position of having all three but if I had to let one go it would definitely be the tumble dryer, no question. We have hardly any worktop space so nowhere to stack dirty or drying dishes so it'd be a real pain without the dishwasher.

I don't really get the argument about not having wet clothes around the house as I still have an airer in pretty much constant use through the winter months despite having a dryer, as there is always stuff that can't go in or I prefer not to risk it shrinking. It is useful for underwear, towels and sheets but I could definitely live without it.

Keepingupwiththejonesys · 18/09/2018 13:48

How much are people letting dirty and wet dishes stack up before putting them away to need extra worktop space Confused . If you wash as you go, then wash when you've eaten, dry then put away you literally need a tiny space, then the sink.

Lots of wet washing around the house is a recipe for damp, which unsurprisingly is a big problem in the UK.

There's 6 of us, I do around 12 loads of washing a week not including bedding so for me I have a washer and a dryer. I'd love a dishwasher but we don't have room and theres no way I'd be able to dry everything I wash without a dryer.

dinosaurkisses · 18/09/2018 13:53

I wouldn’t be without any of them!

We have a condenser dryer tucked away in the corner of the kitchen and the dishwasher and washer are built in. If there was absolutely no room for all three, I’d be looking on Which? for washer-dryer recommendations.

Life is too short to have clothes and bedding constantly draped over radiators and dryers, and then worrying about getting washing in from the line when it looks like rain.

greenBalloondeflating · 18/09/2018 13:56

I couldn't do without any but had a similar problem. The tumble dryer went in my bedroom (condenser) it's been fine.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 18/09/2018 14:09

Washing machine and dishwasher.

A580Hojas · 18/09/2018 14:13

I'm not fussed about our tumble dryer - rarely use it. 10 minutes once a week if that. So could happily live without it.

Sparklyfee · 18/09/2018 14:20

Get rid of the dishwasher

Iwantaunicorn · 18/09/2018 14:24

I wouldn’t be without all 3. When we didn’t have space for the tumble dryer I put it in another room and had a counter top dishwasher which will do 6 place settings!

If I absolutely had to choose, I’d go for a washer dryer and a dishwasher.

QueenOfMyWorld · 18/09/2018 14:28

Washing machine and dishwasher.hate doing dishes!

Lindtnotlint · 18/09/2018 14:35

Miele washer-dryer plus dishwasher. (Or stack if poss)

MrsBertBibby · 18/09/2018 14:36

I had a Bosch washer dryer. It was ok.

Definitely better than no tumbler or no dishwasher.

3stonedown · 18/09/2018 14:39

We don't have a dryer or dishwasher and I would get a dishwasher in a heartbeat if we had the space. I would only use dryer for bedding and towels anyway

AnythingButMagnolia · 18/09/2018 14:39

Op I think you're sorted with just washing machine & dishwasher.

Assuming you don't want a combi washer dryer, there's nothing to beat line drying imo. Also heated (and indeed non heater) airers work well.

flirtygirl · 18/09/2018 14:40

Washer and dishwasher only.

I have a wash dryer but the dryer function takes too long and it's a top of the range LG. When it breaks I will get a high spin washing machine.

Tumble dryers cost too much in use and I'm naturally frugal. I'd rather use airers or radiators and in rooms with trickle vents have never had a problem with condensation. Even an open window can stop problems when drying clothes inside.

flirtygirl · 18/09/2018 14:41

Stacking them as up thread, is a great idea if you feel that you can't live without a dryer.

IsTheRainEverComingBack · 18/09/2018 14:43

I have a Hotpoint washer dryer, it’s been going 5 years and is still great. You have to dry longer than you would in a single dryer but honestly it’s brilliant. Have everything you want, just make sure you choose a washer dryer with a big drum that can do big loads of wash and dry.

anonymousbird · 18/09/2018 14:45

I have all three, but tumble in the garage.

Otherwise:

  1. Washing Machine (or Washer/Dryer)
  2. Dishwasher
  3. Tumble Drier
Kidssendingmenuts · 18/09/2018 14:48

I haven't replaced my dishwasher since it broke down three years ago! Just washer and dryer would be fine. My water bill went right down after I stopped using the dish washer too!

MinaPaws · 18/09/2018 14:50

Dishwasher and a washer-dryer.

Washer dryers are fine. Mine (Zanussi) was on all day long every day when DC were small as DS2 had chronic reflux and needed new clothes, bedclothes, fresh towels and muslins about eight times a day.

PodgeBod · 18/09/2018 14:59

Washing machine and dryer, I only really have room for one but have managed to squeeze in a dryer! I've never had a dishwasher, never even lived in a house with one.

BitchQueen90 · 18/09/2018 15:06

I only have a washing machine at home!

I'd choose a dryer over a dishwasher. I've never understood dishwashers really. Doing dishes for me is less of a pain than trying to get clothes dry.

specialsubject · 18/09/2018 15:25

no dryer but work from home and have a garden so can pick my washing days. would not be without washer and dishwasher.
