Who bakes your birthday cake?

I've just put mine in the oven.
I think the last time someone made me a cake for my actual birthday was a friend about 10 years ago as we happened to be meeting up with the kids that day. I was so pleased, wasn't expecting it at all.

And MIL will bake a cake at the drop of a hat, so I've probably had cake off her too, although not on the actual date and it tends to be a bit random as to whether she's remembered it's my birthday or she just fancied baking cake.

My mum would bake me a cake if she were still alive and we happened to be together (I live abroad).

And so I am once again baking my own birthday cake for tomorrow, and it's made me a bit thoughtful and a bit nostalgic and, if I'm honest, a little bit sad too.

M&S

Just a small thing for the kids to sing to me with

MVLipwig · 01/09/2018 16:34

Been making mine since 13 maybe. I prefer it if I’m honest. I get a cake I know I’ll like, praise for the cake and no one else needs to stress over it. But is there someone you could tell next year? I doubt anyone would begrudge you a cake

bastardlyandmutley · 01/09/2018 16:34

M&S!

Happy Birthday for tomorrow. Enjoy your cake!

Fiona Cairns always bakes mine

I'm sorry you feel sad. I'm not sure i have had a birthday cake in a while but DH and dd1 make me an Easter egg every year so I don't think it's a reflection of their lack of love. I think we just associate cakes with parties and I haven't had a party in a while either. Do your family know you'd appreciate a cake?

Azra12 · 01/09/2018 16:35

Never had a cake baked!!!
But Happy Birthday for tomorrow hope you have a wonderful day! FlowersCake

Thewindsofchange · 01/09/2018 16:35

Can't remember the last time I had a birthday cake. Possibly about 16 years ago when we happened to be at my in laws for my birthday and mil made a chocolate cake. I always buy one for dh.

missyB1 · 01/09/2018 16:38

Oh no one has baked me a birthday cake since I was about 13 Sad
I would absolutely love it if someone did! My dh would buy me a cake if I told him exactly which one to get (he doesn’t eat cake so knows nothing about it!) But home made tastes so much better, and also it’s knowing someone cared enough to make the effort.

missyB1 · 01/09/2018 16:39

Forgot to say happy birthday OP! I bet your cake will be lovely Cake

LoniceraJaponica · 01/09/2018 16:39

Tisfortired · 01/09/2018 16:42

WooYa · 01/09/2018 16:43

DH bakes me a lovely chocolate cake each year - if I tell him amounts/instructions-- /go to the bloody shop--

Tiredmum100 · 01/09/2018 16:43

Happy birthday! I bake my own too. Tried to attach a pic of the one I did this year!

Who bakes your birthday cake?
SlipperyLizard · 01/09/2018 16:53

I bake my own, but I love baking and like to know what I’m getting and that it will be good!

I also make cakes for family, friends etc.

In some ways it is a bit sad that no-one makes me a cake, but the reality is I’d rather do it myself!

theboxofdelights · 01/09/2018 16:57

DD bakes me a cake from a Wright’s chocolate cake mix, started when she was ten. Prior to that no-one (since I left home 30 odd years ago).

longtompot · 01/09/2018 16:58

Noone sobs

Actually, if I do get one, its because I made it. I made my 40th birthday cake which was a guiness cake. Very delicious. I want to make myself a retro black forest gateaux, and may well do so this year if my dd is still at uni (she can't have dairy, so no cream).

PinkHeart5914 · 01/09/2018 17:02

Depends if dh isn’t full on at work he bakes it or mil does it, very rarely have I ended up with a supermarket cake.

Happy birthday for tomorrow and nothing wrong with baking your own cake, home made tates so much better so you get a very nice cake 🍰🍰🍰🍰

SwordToFlamethrower · 01/09/2018 17:02

No one bakes m one but me. :(
I hate shop bought cakes. They taste full of chemicals and they usually are...
I've said many times I would prefer a home made cake, even if it flops. I'd appreciate the thought.
But no. I get a £15 cake from asda or I bake my own!

CountFosco · 01/09/2018 17:07

No-one baked for me for years when I was a young adult and no longer living with Mum but now the DC make one for me (DH use to help but is now excluded since the 10 year old can bake one by herself!). I make for the DC and DH.

It is nice to be baked for and it's one of those jobs that women do much more than men.

ProseccoPoppy · 01/09/2018 17:09

I do usually! But that is because I love baking, and do it as a hobby. I also do all of the rest of the family birthdays. I really enjoy making and - especially - theming and decorating. DH has made me one in the past when I was too busy at work to do my own, he is quite good at baking but won’t deprive me of the chance to do it if I have time.

CMOTDibbler · 01/09/2018 17:10

My one birthday need is for a cake I haven't made - dh sometimes makes one, but more likely to order one from Sponge
