Who bakes your birthday cake?

I've just put mine in the oven.
I think the last time someone made me a cake for my actual birthday was a friend about 10 years ago as we happened to be meeting up with the kids that day. I was so pleased, wasn't expecting it at all.

And MIL will bake a cake at the drop of a hat, so I've probably had cake off her too, although not on the actual date and it tends to be a bit random as to whether she's remembered it's my birthday or she just fancied baking cake.

My mum would bake me a cake if she were still alive and we happened to be together (I live abroad).

And so I am once again baking my own birthday cake for tomorrow, and it's made me a bit thoughtful and a bit nostalgic and, if I'm honest, a little bit sad too.

The last time I had a cake baked for me was my 18th.
My mum and dd, who was 3 at the time made it.
My mum couldn't bake to save herself. The cake was burned, lopsided, covered in running icing with smarties flung over the top😂😂.
DD was so proud of herself. My mum told us all we had to have a slice, it was revolting.
After that attempt she never made a cake again.

My friend has baked mine the last two years - but I do put an order in and ask her 😂😂😂

bimbobaggins · 01/09/2018 17:29

M&S for me too. I’ve had couple of disasters from professional bakers and like to go down the easy route now

I always used to bake my own but now I have a daughter-in-law.🎂 To be fair one year DS1 made one with his children, because D-i-l was busy.

lightonthewater · 01/09/2018 17:30

Never had one!

leanne9312 · 01/09/2018 17:39

Costco 🙂

happymummy12345 · 01/09/2018 17:42

Honestly I've only had cakes as an adult for big birthdays. Not something I thought adults would do to be honest.
I'd hate someone getting me a cake or making me one.

PandaG · 01/09/2018 17:49

DD usually, she is now 16 but has been baking independently for several years. DH baked for me when we were first married, then bought a cake and supervised DC decorating it with sweets for a few years, until DD became competent.

I usually bake for everyone else, though DD will sometimes step in, especially if I am busy. In fact I have contracted out the wedding, funeral and people round for a cuppa baking all summer. She likes doing it!

wanderings · 01/09/2018 18:09

My DH does mine, and we have a very personal ritual for my special day. Every year he invites me to sit in the kitchen with him while he does it; but because he doesn't want me to see the cake until it's ready, I am blindfolded. While we wait for it to bake and cool, he'll wrap my presents as well, and feed me leftover mixture, which everyone knows is at least as good as the cake itself. Only when the cake is ready and the candles are lit am I allowed to see it!

We know it's a weird ritual (so everyone tells us) but we do it every year, and I really like it!

TheKitchenWitch · 01/09/2018 18:18

So not that unusual then. I think everyone should have cake for their birthday, and I would never buy one (but I’m not in the U.K. so it’s not so readily available here).

I would love someone to bake me a cake. Dh was not up for it when I suggested it, and ds1, who actually likes cooking and kitchen stuff, said he didn’t feel like it, which I think upset me a bit. But he has said he will decorate it, which is something.

No one has ever baked me a cake. Pathetic isn't it :(

TheHonGalahadThreepwood · 01/09/2018 18:54

Usually me. My mother will make me one if I'm visiting her around the time of my birthday, and DH will happily bake me one, but if I'm honest I usually prefer my own to his.

RickOShay · 01/09/2018 18:55

No it’s not Hilda.
Flowers for you

MrsMozart · 01/09/2018 19:15

Usually Sainsburys, or sometimes Tescos.

Happy Birthday for tomorrow Flowers

BackforGood · 01/09/2018 19:19

One of the dc. They all like baking.

When they were too little, or before they were born, I made my own.

SoyDora · 01/09/2018 19:22

I can’t remember the last time I had a birthday cake! Probably my 21st. I don’t mean to sound like a knob but I didn’t really realise adults had them? DH always cooks me a nice meal or takes me out, I get presents/cards etc but a cake isn’t something that I really think about.

Airaforce · 01/09/2018 19:22

M&S.

Happy Birthday to you!

I think everyone should have cake for their birthday

Well... if they want one. I don’t, we’d probably all have a slide then feed the rest to the birds so it would be a waste. Agree that if it’s important to you then your family should make an effort though.

StarfishSandwich · 01/09/2018 19:27

DH and I have been away on my birthday for the last few years so it’s not really been possible. I had an ice cream this year as I didn’t even fancy any of the posh desserts at the restaurant we had my special birthday lunch at! MIL bakes like her life depends on it though so there’s always some kind of cake around my birthday time (and any other time I see her)! My mum or nana would do one if we were seeing them on the day though, definitely.

user1483390742 · 01/09/2018 19:32

I bake birthday cakes for everyone in my family. No one has ever baked or even bought me one. I feel a bit sad buying one for myself, so never have! Sad

TheFuckfaceWhisperer · 01/09/2018 20:00

I've never had a birthday cake, either made or bought, for about 38 years, since I turned 10. Actually, I had a cake a few years ago, but only because I bought it myself. I always make for everyone else

MrsJonesAndMe · 01/09/2018 20:01

Sometimes I bake and the children decorate, sometimes I bake it because I want to try something, sometimes DH bakes with the children.

This year I will be baking, as I'd like to try and do a GF cake.

bluemoonchances · 01/09/2018 20:01

My mum baked cakes for my birthday until I was about age 5, then I had shop bought ones until I met my DH 12 years ago, since then MIL bakes me one every year, and they're yummy! I'm a lucky lady!

Bimgy85 · 01/09/2018 20:04

I've never had a homemade birthday cake made by a family member or friend so, feel lucky.

GinIsIn · 01/09/2018 20:06

Happy birthday! I bake my own, but I love to bake....
