Who bakes your birthday cake?

TheKitchenWitch · 01/09/2018 16:32

I've just put mine in the oven.
I think the last time someone made me a cake for my actual birthday was a friend about 10 years ago as we happened to be meeting up with the kids that day. I was so pleased, wasn't expecting it at all.

And MIL will bake a cake at the drop of a hat, so I've probably had cake off her too, although not on the actual date and it tends to be a bit random as to whether she's remembered it's my birthday or she just fancied baking cake.

My mum would bake me a cake if she were still alive and we happened to be together (I live abroad).

And so I am once again baking my own birthday cake for tomorrow, and it's made me a bit thoughtful and a bit nostalgic and, if I'm honest, a little bit sad too.

Dp always used to buy me one from maison blanc but it’s closed now. Last birthday he resorted to getting one from Waitrose and it was dreadful!!
This year I think the dds will make one for me.
I make all of theirs!

beela · 01/09/2018 20:32

My sil baked me one once. My mum does sometimes. But actually I love baking and am usually happy of an excuse to make a cake for myself, as I usually make them for other people!

HollyBollyBooBoo · 01/09/2018 20:36

I bought 12 Krispy Kreme doughnuts and put them on the cake plate with candles for mine - went down a treat at the party!

Nobody! I live alone and my family are a long way away. I get myself a Colin caterpillar cakeGrin

Parker231 · 01/09/2018 20:41

The local cake shop. We order from them for all the family. They are amazing personalised cakes. No one would thank me for a cake I baked!

Cousinit · 01/09/2018 20:49

Ah, I haven't had a birthday cake baked for me for years. I can't remember when the last time was. DH and kids always buy me one but shop bought is never as good as homemade is it? I'm the only one in the family who bakes and it's never occurred to me to bake my own birthday cake but maybe I should. Why not treat yourself to the yummiest cake you can bake? Happy Birthday Cake

DelurkingAJ · 01/09/2018 20:50

DH with enthusiastic ‘help’ from DSs (2 and 5) if we’re not going to see DM otherwise she will make it with them. Happiness is a slice of birthday cake for dessert the day after my birthday!

TheKitchenWitch · 01/09/2018 21:22

I’d bake a cake (or similar) for most occasions and celebrations. It’s never occurred to me that birthdays should be excluded because I’m an adult!

I love baking too, but I’d really appreciate someone else making this for me (without me having to ask). Ah well.
Chocolate cake has been baked by me and decorated (without me seeing it) by ds1. He says he might have overdone it a bit with the sprinkles 😂
I am looking forward to tomorrow. Thank you for all your good wishes! Here’s to 46 bring a good year.

I make my own, DH is a good cook but not good at baking my Dd usually helps.

colouringinpro · 01/09/2018 21:29

A shop. Despite me consistently (and not too excessively!) Saying how much I enjoy a homemade cake Sad

WhingyNinja · 01/09/2018 21:37

My fiancé, aided by my 2yo. Fucking carnage.

Longdistance · 01/09/2018 21:38

No one really.

Depends where dh gets the cake, so Sainsbury’s this year 🤷🏼‍♀️

HildaZelda · 01/09/2018 21:52

Thank you @RickOShay x

Katedotness1963 · 01/09/2018 22:31

I had one bought cake as a child. The last couple of years my eldest has baked me a Victoria sponge for my birthday.

CherryPavlova · 01/09/2018 23:08

I don’t usually bother for myself - I don’t need the calories.
I still make for young adult children although our eldest made her own this year as she was off and I was working.
I can’t get overly excited about cakes forbadults except perhaps my mothers who’ll be 94 in a weeks time.

VeryFoolishFay · 01/09/2018 23:41

Partly because of budgetary restrictions and partly because I always wonder what to buy, but mostly because I enjoy baking, I have made my group of closest friends a birthday cake for the last few years.

I am touched how much they appreciate it. The first year, a few were moved to tears, but now they have come to expect it - which is fine too. Reading this has encouraged me to keep baking them!

VeryFoolishFay · 01/09/2018 23:43

Oh, and The Kitchenwitch - we share a special day! Happy birthday to us both for tomorrow!

venys · 01/09/2018 23:57

Konditor & Cook. At least their cakes come close to fresh unlike the supermarket ones. But they cost £££.

StrangeLookingParasite · 01/09/2018 23:59

Dh was not up for it when I suggested it, and ds1, who actually likes cooking and kitchen stuff, said he didn’t feel like it, which I think upset me a bit.

I can completely understand that. Bit mean of them!

If I have cake, I make it, or it comes from a shop. I doubt it has ever crossed the minds of anyone in my family to make me a cake.

DelphiniumBlue · 02/09/2018 00:04

My mum baked mine, until DS1 was old enough to take over, now he does birthday cake for everyone in the family.
DH has never done baking, although his Mum was fab at it.

MyRelationshipIsWeird · 02/09/2018 00:14

I used to direct the DCs to make me one (or bake it myself and get them to decorate it) but these days I just make it for myself!

DP has one made by a professional for my 40th, which was amazing.

XH bought me one last year as I’d temporarily split up with my current DP and had nobody else to make me one! I think the idea of helping the DCs make me one was a step too far, so he ordered me a coffee one from M&S. It was lush and the DCs don’t like coffee so I got to eat it all myself Grin

MyRelationshipIsWeird · 02/09/2018 00:18

My most memorable birthday for cake was when I was 14 and my mum was in hospital for a few months. My dad wasn’t renowned for his domestic duties but he really stepped up when she was ill. He took me shopping at Camden Market for clothes as my gift. Then he made me a vanilla and coffee cake in a chequerboard style and put a little toy on top. We went to visit my mum and she’d made me a cake at the hospital she was staying at as part of her occupational therapy. Many tears all round.

LiquoricePickle · 02/09/2018 00:26

Happy birthday!

My husband makes my cake - coffee and walnut - each year. It's the only time he bakes and he gets nervous about it!
