Who bakes your birthday cake?

I've just put mine in the oven.
I think the last time someone made me a cake for my actual birthday was a friend about 10 years ago as we happened to be meeting up with the kids that day. I was so pleased, wasn't expecting it at all.

And MIL will bake a cake at the drop of a hat, so I've probably had cake off her too, although not on the actual date and it tends to be a bit random as to whether she's remembered it's my birthday or she just fancied baking cake.

My mum would bake me a cake if she were still alive and we happened to be together (I live abroad).

And so I am once again baking my own birthday cake for tomorrow, and it's made me a bit thoughtful and a bit nostalgic and, if I'm honest, a little bit sad too.

My lovely Mum always did. When she died I had to make my own. Now my older daughter, with a little reminding, will do it.

Tesco Colin caterpillar every time

cucumbergin · 02/09/2018 00:56

Has been Colin in the past but I suspect DS (6) will persuade his dad that what I really need is a Batman cake. Grin

DH or M&S.

M&S is making his this year. It's very good of them. Grin

I have a Christmas birthday and love Christmas cake, much more than birthday cake. For the last 15 years my mil made a small Christmas cake and decorated it as a birthday cake for me. I used to have it to myself but dc like the cake as well so now I have to share ;-)

ASqueakingInTheShrubbery · 02/09/2018 09:05

My mum, usually with DD's or a DN's help to decorate it. DD and I make one for DH. If mum wasn't around or able, DH would probably get a nice one from Sainsburys rather than make one himself. He's a decent cook but not very confident about baking.

Catspyjamazzzz · 02/09/2018 09:16

I have no memory of ever having a cake. Assume must have had one when I was small.

Greedycushionhoarder2 · 02/09/2018 09:46

Outing myself here but my 14yr old dd makes everyone's cakes, she just made mine which is supposed to be our dog and she made my granddaughter peppa pig last week.

I have to remind my partner about 5 times to get me a red velvet cake from M&S. Don't think anybody has baked me a cake since I was about 5. I bake for my family (partners and grandparents) birthdays however draw the line at baking for my own birthday.

WhenDoISleep · 02/09/2018 09:57

18 years since anyone has baked me a birthday cake (that was the last birthday I lived at home for and my Mum made my favourite chocolate cake).

DH bought me a birthday cake once, 9 years ago. Since then I haven't had a cake, until this year when DSis bought me one. I'm sure he would sort a cake if I asked, but it's a point of principle now that I don't ask as surely he should want to make my birthday nice.

I bake cakes for everyone (DH, DS x 2, DSis) on their birthdays. I'm hopeful that DS1 might attempt to make a cake next year.

Greedy They are brilliant!! She's very talented.

knittedwoollenmouse · 02/09/2018 21:43

I had one once when I was a nipper, but nothing since.

maggienolia · 03/09/2018 06:53

Mine's being baked by Mr Tesco for my birthday today.

I make them for DH and the DCS (although DD1 decorates them - she's better at it than me)

Juanbablo · 03/09/2018 06:56

No one. Sometimes we will buy a small carrot cake from the co op.

ShatnersBassoon · 03/09/2018 06:57

I have a freshly hatched Colin most years. I haven't had a birthday cake baked for me since I was about 12.

TheDowagerCuntess · 03/09/2018 07:02

Me.

I would love one of my Mum's cakes for my birthday, it has been a long time.

NatashaRomanov · 03/09/2018 07:11

@wanderings That is actually quite lovely!

I usually make my own. Sometimes my Mum will also bake one, occasionally my Dad will buy one of those tiny ones for me.
When the giant French Fancies were available, my husband would buy me one of those!

StylishMummy · 03/09/2018 07:16

I make my own, and all the families

WhirlwindHugs · 03/09/2018 07:16

Happy Birthday! I'm glad DS iced and decorated, they were being a bit mean before.

My DH makes mine and the kids decorate usually, sometimes it gets brought. He used to be terrible at it! But is now very good.

GrumpyOldMare · 03/09/2018 07:20

Never baked one. My mum used to do my birthday cake when I was a child. As I'm an adult now, there is no need for a birthday cake.My son doesn't get one now either as he's an adult.

Somewhereovertherainbow13 · 03/09/2018 07:38

Happy birthday op!

Since leaving home for uni I think my sister has once or twice baked me a cake but other than that I’m lucky if I get a shop brought one. Although considering I worked out recently that nobody else has even cooked me a meal in the past year (aside from a few random meals out) I shouldn’t be surprised that my oh doesn’t bake a cake

TheKitchenWitch · 03/09/2018 08:50

Ds did an amazing job decorating the cake, so I think he may well be up for baking it next year too.

I’m not understanding the no birthday cake for adults thing. Dh always has cheesecake for his birthday, ds1 wants strawberry cake, I always used to have the Hungarian doboš torte (now I make chocolate cake as the other is a bit of a faff).
Unless you don’t like any cake at all of course...

I do like some types of cake, it just doesn’t occur to me to want one for my birthday! There are plenty of things I like more than cake, so a nice block of gooey Camembert would be more appreciated Smile

LusaCole · 03/09/2018 09:29

I have a bought cake. This bothers me not at all!

BiddyPop · 03/09/2018 09:38

DH and DD usually go to a reasonably nice shop for cakes locally to us and buy one. If they remember.

I sometimes buy and sometimes bake for DH.

And we normally buy M&S for DD (she chooses on Christmas Eve, her birthday is Boxing Day), but we have baked some years (there was a year we were away and she had a vision of what she wanted, so I made the topper at home in advance and brought my tins and ingredients for a sponge cake which I could make by hand if necessary - but there was a hand-held whisk/machine that DD was delighted to use herself to make it!).
