I need a new one.

No contact with family so I don’t want to go back to my maiden name. Divorced from husband and he is getting remarried so I don’t want his name either.

I don’t know where to start with looking for a new one.

My mother’s maiden name is awful and so is her mothers!

Kardashian

🤣🤣

I never liked my maiden name as it started with a letter near the end of the alphabet. Always last on everything and picked last in school. Always swore I was going to marry someone with a name higher up the alphabet so my kids wouldn't have to suffer the same. Also didn't like that it was a surname you always had to spell so bear that in mind too.

Carmichael or Bramwell

Sparkes or Holloway

If you pick something very unique or extravagant (I love Cavendish, Montgomery, Fitzroy, Hawthorne...etc) you run the risk of its heritage being questioned ‘oh that’s an unusual name where’s that from?’

Because of that I’d choose something a little less glamorous. I’d probably pick Archer, James, Charles...or similar

Favourite novel eg Austen . I always liked Fletcher as in J B Fletcher - I would go for a famous role model - my surname isn’t Pankhurst - but she is a relative and I’d go for that or A door that might open for you with that name - I wonder how many interviews go to Churchill etc

What about using a place name as a surname, somewhere that you love/means something to you? Or the surname of someone who has had a big positive impact on your life? Failing that, definitely go for Bond!

EastMidsGPs · 01/09/2018 08:06

@TooMinty place name is a good idea
In 80s was treated by a Dr Yoxall - also a village in Derbyshire.
It works! as I can remember this but not what I had for breakfast

I've often contemplated changing my surname.

I like McQueen. Also like Fairbanks.

If I had to pick a name which has already been in the family, I would go with Ashenden, which was my great grandmother's maiden name.

CormoranStrike · 01/09/2018 09:12

Something Cornish as they are so lovely.

Pendragon
Penhaligon
Cornwallis

Zoflorabore · 01/09/2018 09:17

I also like cheese like a pp above but my fictional surname would have to be "Dairylea" as that's my favourite.

Can't see there being many of them about...

mistermagpie · 01/09/2018 09:19

There was a boy at my school who's surname was Aqualina (Aqua-leena). I wanted to marry him just for the name!

deptfordgirl · 01/09/2018 09:25

I love E surnames like Eyre, Elliott or Earnshaw. Not sure why, just like the way they sound.

SapphireSeptember · 01/09/2018 09:34

Snape, Williams, Morgan. The last two I used in my story. My friend lives next door to someone with Snape as a surname, which made me giggle. Grin
