Are these shoes acceptable for high school?

Hi,

Dd starts high school next week and I really don't have a clue what shoes to get her!

She doesn't have friends yet (struggles socially) so can't compare.

We were in Clarks earlier and I was asking the assistant who looked very young, what she thought of these shoes she'd picked out and she said that some girls would wear them, but most will still try and get away with trainers and Vans. The way she said it suggested that "some girls wear them" actually meant 'the girls who get teased wear them'.

My DD already stands out as being quite different, so just want to make sure I'm not making her stand out more. I know that sounds awful, but I'm sure some of you will understand.

TIA

DD has just started High School and is one of the few girls not wearing trainers. She was adamant that she wanted brogues

FlopsVoice · 31/08/2018 21:26

I only have a wee DS

But I used to wear these from 2001 - 2008 Grin

They are standard going into Y7 shoes.

My DCs school is weirdly relaxed about shoes...As long as shoes are all black, trainers are overlooked. This means almost no one wears slip on dolly shoes. Even I have given in and let my DC have leather Converse/Vans.

But for Y7 it was definitely lace up Clark's for or similar for most D.C. I know.

"DD has just started High School and is one of the few girls not wearing trainers. She was adamant that she wanted brogues"

I think that is unusual. Most secondary schools don't allow trainers outside of PE.

daffodillament · 31/08/2018 21:34

OMG flops I used to wear ones like that..but horrific brown ones. I actually like the shoes you mention Op but I love the Dr Marten Mary Jane type ...Wish I had them in school. And what saddo trolls a post about school shoes FFS !

“ I think that is unusual. Most secondary schools don't allow trainers outside of PE.”

I know! I was really surprised too. Shit hot on folk not wearing blazers and specific tshirts for PE Hmm but not bothering that most parents ignore the ‘no trainers’ rule

treaclesoda · 31/08/2018 21:41

The style of shoes in question are more or less the only sort allowed at my DD's school. They have to have black lace up shoes and they aren't allowed to have a chunky sole, so that's pretty much the only thing that meets the criteria.

Grin Grin Haha! The saddest kind I guess.

Maybe it's the shoe fetish person?

Bunnyjo · 31/08/2018 22:05

Well, I never expected a thread about school shoes would attract so many deletions! Anyhow, back to the OP’s question - those Clarks brogues aren’t the prettiest I’ve seen. My DD is going into Y7 and had previously had Dr Martens, but she wanted brogues this year and the DM ones were a poor fit. So, we have opted for these pair of Angry Angels instead. I think they look great and I just hope they are as hard-wearing as her DMs have been.

MaisyPops · 31/08/2018 22:09

They're fine OP and just what most of our y7s and y8s wear.

Most schools will enforce school shoe rules, otherwise how would the local newspapers fill their pages by September 15th with 'angry parent bought neon orange trainers and claims their child is persecuted and having their human rights violated' articles.

GColdtimer · 31/08/2018 22:46

Totally fine. My dad going into year 8 has similar ones. Don't worry. She will be fine in them.

SoupDragon · 31/08/2018 22:48

No less pretty than the ones you posted! 😂

Maelstrop · 31/08/2018 23:38

All the girls in Year 7 have the brogues, same sort you posted, OP. Lots of ballet flats, too, but they’re not as practical, come off on stairs etc.

Deadringer · 01/09/2018 01:10

My fussy DD age 15 picked the same shoes op, she says most of her friends wear similar. They used to all wear deck shoes until sine of them started having problems with their arches. Her school are very strict and wouldn't allow any of those shoes with thick soles and definitely not trainers.

Thishatisnotmine · 01/09/2018 01:19

Pod shoes! They weremine in 98/99. Tore my aankles to shreds, those shoes hated my feet. See, aren't they hiddeous compared to those brogues!

Deadringer · 01/09/2018 01:22

*Some not sine

YerAuntFanny · 01/09/2018 01:34

If she likes them they're fine.

We're NE Scotland and DS has just started secondary, most of the senior girls seem to be wearing brogues and the boys wear loafers. Everyone below S5 are wearing all black trainers.

I think Scotland may be more relaxed about uniforms though, atleast in the poorer areas that I've lived in anyway, as we never had any footwear guidelines and our 3 local academies/high schools allow trainers too.

crimsonlake · 01/09/2018 01:39

Surely your school has a written policy on dress code, please read it?

CakeNinja · 01/09/2018 01:51

JeeeeeezUSSSSS!
Thankfully I seem to have missed all the nasty comments!
Dds have chosen black brogues to go back to school in. I say ‘chosen’... their choices seem to have been (In Russell and Bromley) brogues, chunky kickers or Mary Janes.
Thankfully, they chose the style that is practical for them both given that they walk 4 miles a day (2 miles to and from school) and that adhere to the uniform code.
Vans and converse will see them sent to isolation (worthy of another thread entirely I’m sure) because they are too, I’m guessing, casual?
I work at a junior school and 90% of girls wear brogue style shoes, the rest wear Mary Janes.

Will the dress code say which shoes are currently popular then?

LoniceraJaponica · 01/09/2018 07:35

Usually the dress code is specific enough to make certain styles of shoe popular SoupDragon
Do you have secondary school age children?

LynetteScavo · 01/09/2018 08:25

I've just read my DC school uniform policy.
"Footwear must be black shoes or pumps. There must be no branding of the shoe in any other colour than black. The soles of the shoe must be black."

I'm guessing teachers haven't got time to be bothering about Vans logos in red.

LoniceraJaponica · 01/09/2018 09:14

This is on DD's school website:

Shoes

Students are required to wear formal, smart, black leather, suede or patent shoes to school.
Students are not permitted to wear trainers. This includes black leather trainers including those without markings.
If students choose to wear black ballet pumps, these should be plain black without any accessories, such as studs.
School shoes should have no visible branding including Nike ticks or sporting logos.
Boots are not acceptable (a boot is defined as anything that touches or comes above the ankle bone).

What is wrong with boots?
