Are these shoes acceptable for high school?

Hi,

Dd starts high school next week and I really don't have a clue what shoes to get her!

She doesn't have friends yet (struggles socially) so can't compare.

We were in Clarks earlier and I was asking the assistant who looked very young, what she thought of these shoes she'd picked out and she said that some girls would wear them, but most will still try and get away with trainers and Vans. The way she said it suggested that "some girls wear them" actually meant 'the girls who get teased wear them'.

My DD already stands out as being quite different, so just want to make sure I'm not making her stand out more. I know that sounds awful, but I'm sure some of you will understand.

TIA

They look fine style wise. That's what most of the girls here wear. Variations on the brogue themed. DD went for the Geox chunky sole type but others have the slightly daintier ones.

They look fine. I think it's nice that you care and want her fit in!

carrie74 · 31/08/2018 20:23

Going into Y9 DD here, she (like many of her friends) wear brogues too. I actually had to convince her to abandon the old primary style Velcro strap shoes last year, and she's been very happy.

ineedtostopbeingsolazy · 31/08/2018 20:25

Brogues are totally fine to wear, half the school will probably be in them.
It depends on your schools policy but ours wouldn't allow DMs Vans or converse even if they were all black.

My dds wore brogue type shoes for many years, they're in rubbish pumps now in sixth form.

I prefer the schuh ones though. Not b cause there's anything wrong with Clark's but just because they look a bit nicer.

My sister wears those to senior school!
How old was the shop assistant roughly? I'm 26 and I'll be honest, no one I knew would have wore those in school, but my sister and her friends all wear them now!

Have a DD going into year 9, and they are fine! We wouldn't get away with vans or converse either. Those or ballet flats tend to be popular here.

Try not to overthink it at this stage. She'll hopefully find her tribe at some point in year 7.

Atthebottomofthesea · 31/08/2018 20:29

I do find it a little amusing that all the stuff that was horrid in my day, is now the in thing.

As they say 'what goes around, comes around'.

Thishatisnotmine · 31/08/2018 20:29

From my my looking at what teenage girls going to school on the bus wear (not creepy, I am just amazed at how much of it looks like my wardrobe from the 90s!) brogues are really popular. See some dm shoes and boots, as well as a few chunky t-bar shoes. Barely any ballet flats. Shoes sre so much nicer than the ones we wore to school when clompy kickers and Rockports were in fashion!

colditz · 31/08/2018 20:38

I have boys but actually, I was surprised to see brogues on almost every single girl's feet (I look because I'm obsessive about shoes!). It seems to be a kickback against the ballet flat generation of ten years ago, you know how these things go.

Stop * I think your not only completely lacking in current trend knowledge but also in any manners.
Basically, quiet down love your ignorance is showing.
Btw if you're banned switching to that user name really isn't going to help you !

What your DD has chosen was popular last year for sure & I’m sure it will be this year too, DC had some for part of Year 7, but when we replaced her shoes she went back to a Mary Jane with Velcro, as did many of the girls, because the laces were too much of a faff with the number of times they were taking them off each day.

Please try not to worry, there’s a huge variance in what they wear and no one seems to care. When she was going into year 7 she chose the Mary Jane (with Velcro) style that had a wee diamanté thing. I was a bit concerned she would have the piss taken out of her, but she said she liked them so didn’t care...then when she started loads of the girls had similar shoes...

AnnieAnoniMoose · 31/08/2018 20:51

Our school wouldn’t allow the ones mogg linked to (with ankle straps) nor ballet pumps. They wouldn’t get through the gate with Vans/Trainers/Pumps.

RedSkyLastNight · 31/08/2018 20:56

DD (who is about to go into Y8 at a school with strict footwear requirements) tells me that girls wear a mixture of shoes similar to the brogues pictured and ballet flats. According to her the majority wear brogues.

(She did go on to say that it depends what sort of girl you are - if you just stand about being boring, ballet shoes are fine, but if you actually want to run about or ever have to run to a lesson because you are late, then brogues are more practical).

adoggymama · 31/08/2018 20:57

Those are lovely shoe- brogues are super stylish atm too! I'm 19 for reference :)

In my experience the mean kids/chavs used to wear vans/non regulated school shoes.

LemonysSnicket · 31/08/2018 20:59

Oh good god, they're old lady 1930s headmistress shoes!

I worse brogues to school but they were far more delicate - not so massive and clunky.

BillywigSting · 31/08/2018 21:06

There are a few secondary schools near me and they look very much like what a lot of the girls are wearing.

They look better on the ones with slim legs and pretty ankles though, they're very sensible (which is quite refreshing as a trend) but I think not the most flattering.

If she likes them I'd say go for it. She certainly won't be the only one wearing that style

NintendoSwitch · 31/08/2018 21:09

My DD is going into year 9 and has worn Clark's brogues throughout years 7 and 8. This year she has Clarks slip on ballet style pumps from the Bootleg range.

SunnyintheSun · 31/08/2018 21:12

Hiya, at the risk of hijacking the thread, what’s the rationale for black leather shoes in UK schools? I live overseas and our kids are super active during the day so girls are actively encouraged to wear trainers and leggings (or anything else which allows them to be active through out the day). Just wondering how they play football/ other sports at lunch and break times in heavy black shoes?

LoniceraJaponica · 31/08/2018 21:16

Lunchbreaks are usually too short to do much sport. DD had 40 minutes for lunch.

GreenTulips · 31/08/2018 21:17

Generally they hang round corridors playing in their phones, they aren't allowed in the field and have to stick to tables outside.
Not allowed to get muddy
Girls have to wear pleated skirts

They want them smart and business like - to 'reflect the work environment' apparently

Hence the blazers and leather shoes

SunnyintheSun · 31/08/2018 21:21

Ah, thanks. It seems kind of sad but I can see the logic (although frankly glad our kids don’t have to wear them). Sorry, thread hijack over!

Fairylea · 31/08/2018 21:23

I think once they get to high school they stop playing about at lunch - sports included, unless it’s a specific sports club where they would get changed into their pe / sports kit.
