Are these shoes acceptable for high school?

Hi,

Dd starts high school next week and I really don't have a clue what shoes to get her!

She doesn't have friends yet (struggles socially) so can't compare.

We were in Clarks earlier and I was asking the assistant who looked very young, what she thought of these shoes she'd picked out and she said that some girls would wear them, but most will still try and get away with trainers and Vans. The way she said it suggested that "some girls wear them" actually meant 'the girls who get teased wear them'.

My DD already stands out as being quite different, so just want to make sure I'm not making her stand out more. I know that sounds awful, but I'm sure some of you will understand.

TIA

Wow, McFarty, you sound lovely! Hmm

Dd wears these to school. Most of the girls wear similar ones from H&M, topshop etc

Are these shoes acceptable for high school?

Dd's school policy even bans kickers. They are also not allowed velcro. There is no way dd could wear ballet flats, anything with a low front and she ends up looking like a baby giraffe.

They look like the type of shoes that 90% of our girls wear. They might say that "all the other girls wear trainers" but the reality is they don't. Particularly in strict schools.

I work in a shoe shop and have a 14 year old daughter, that is the style 90% of secondary school girls are choosing, my daughter has the Start-Rite impulsive (chunky brogue)
More girls are going for the slimmer brogue like your picture, only about 10% are going for the ballet pump/Mary Jane style
I think they are fine
Schools where we are have banned vans converse and trainers

Ours wear DMs, there are some without yellow stitching here. Does depend on the school rules though and better if your dc's feet have stopped growing as they are quite expensive but long lasting.

@NewDirectionNeeded

Well said.

@McFartymcTarty

You must have some awful insecurity's yourself to make such a nasty comment about a child. Wow

Ohyesiam · 31/08/2018 18:39

My dd is just about to go o to year 10. She’s popular and lively and her and several of her friends have the clarks brogues you pictured op, not the patent ones.
She did hanker after ballet flats but they lasted a week and were really impractical, so she happily went back to brogues.
Not the loser shoes that some people seem to think they are, and this is a massive somewhat rough comprehensive.

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 31/08/2018 18:39

Probably wouldn't get Clark's just because they have a more primary school reputation if you want her to be a little cooler.

LoniceraJaponica · 31/08/2018 18:40

"Probably wouldn't get Clark's just because they have a more primary school reputation if you want her to be a little cooler.!"

Ignore this ^^ advice.

When ds started secondary, he could not believe that he really had to wear leather shoes, and thought I was being too strict in the rules.

We went onto the school website and found every photo we could and enlarged it until we could see the boys feet. Sure enough every one in black leather shoes, and eh gave in and let me buy them.

Could you do similar? Go on the website and look at photos, see what the girls are wearing?

He also waited until everyone else had come into school in a coat before he would buy one, by which time he had worked out that Superdry was the coat to have (thank goodness for the Outlet centre!)

cupofteaplease · 31/08/2018 18:47

My dds are going into years 9 and 7 and they have both chosen patent brogues. So very similar to the ones your dd has chosen.

They’d be in trouble for wearing vans or trainers.

nostaples · 31/08/2018 19:05

Haven't read the thread but am a bit bamboozled by a shop assistant in Clarks saying that the girls don't wear Clarks but Vans or trainers instead. Firstly, she must have sold hundreds of pairs to year 7 children over the last few weeks. Second, she's not exactly going to win salesperson of the year is she?

Have reported McFarty's post. Absolutely unacceptable. Horrified at 'man shoes' and 'geeks and freaks'. You expect bullying from kids at school sadly but it's very depressing to see such disgusting attitudes originating from adults.

Also, both my dcs wore Clarks brogue type shoes all the way through school and were/are considered very cool. Eldest, about to start at sixth form also has a boyfriend who is absolutely smitten with her and the way she dresses. Also very pleased they still have beautiful feet - not the horrible bunions etc you see on girls who've crammed their feet into 'fashion' shoes.

Atthebottomofthesea · 31/08/2018 20:11

I reported too. Absolutely vile.

Though I do wish to know where this island filled with man shoes is. Do they grow on trees or are they like root vegetables?

(I know being mean about spelling is not on generally, but in light of what has been said I will anyway)

GreenTulips · 31/08/2018 20:12

Well then there's no surprise she isn't socially accepted is there?

Whilst I don't think my kids would wear these shoes, I'd be horrified and seriously upset if I discovered they were mean about another child's choice of footwear.

I've taught mine that all people are equal and deserve a chance, you don't have to be friends with everyone, but you do have to be kind.

Please learn this and teach your kids the same.

And for whatabors worth, Geeks are very trendy individuals
