Are these shoes acceptable for high school?

Hi,

Dd starts high school next week and I really don't have a clue what shoes to get her!

She doesn't have friends yet (struggles socially) so can't compare.

We were in Clarks earlier and I was asking the assistant who looked very young, what she thought of these shoes she'd picked out and she said that some girls would wear them, but most will still try and get away with trainers and Vans. The way she said it suggested that "some girls wear them" actually meant 'the girls who get teased wear them'.

My DD already stands out as being quite different, so just want to make sure I'm not making her stand out more. I know that sounds awful, but I'm sure some of you will understand.

TIA

All the people saying "they're awful" - what do your kids wear to school?
They're not pretty, I agree - but if you're not allowed trainers, ballet pumps, or "branded fashion footwear" (ie Converse, Vans, DMs and Kickers), as we're not - what exactly is the choice? It's going to be sometime like that, or a kiddie t-bar type thing, and I know which my girls would prefer.

Fairylea · 31/08/2018 17:27

Surprised so many people saying they’re awful! Shock

WorldCupnovice · 31/08/2018 17:28

My DD and her friend would not have been seen dead in those shoes going into year 7. By the time she got to year 10 all the girls were wearing them.

I like brogues. I have hamble oaks myself. But I’m not keen on the ones shown earlier. I do like the schuh ones but the Clark’s ones don’t have the actual brogue bits on them.

LoniceraJaponica · 31/08/2018 17:31

"Surprised so many people saying they’re awful! "

I suspect that they don't have children at high school/don't have girls/have children at a school that doesn't have such a strict dress code.

Burlea · 31/08/2018 17:31

My DGD is also starting in year 7. I offered to take her to Clarks she said NO. Nor kickers. She has got some converse shoes. Which is what her friends are wearing.

LoniceraJaponica · 31/08/2018 17:32

"She has got some converse shoes. Which is what her friends are wearing."

Good luck with that. The children at DD's school would be put into isolation for that.

Ilikesweetpeas · 31/08/2018 17:32

These are very much the style the secondary girls in my area wear

steppemum · 31/08/2018 17:33

OP - filter these responses with care!

What a poster wore 18 years ago, and what a child wears in primary are vastly different to what current teens are wearing.

It will depend a lot on the school.
dd2 is in year 8, her school is very strict, leather, flat, black only, no trainers, no Vans.
Most girls wear Clarks brogues.
Some (usually those who don't have to walk to school) wear ballet flats.
Some wear DMs etc.
The shoes you linked to would go unnoticed.

Flaskfan · 31/08/2018 17:35

Schools round here allow black trainers. My school is much more strict (but not that much better), and girls tend to wear dolly shoes or t bars. Considering the vast majority walk, not many brogues.

OpalTree · 31/08/2018 17:36

At dd's comp the year 7s wear either kickers, ballet pumps, loafers, brogues and a few still wear Mary Janes. I think they get a bit of a free pass to not be that trendy in year 7. Dd wore Clarks brogues until half way through year 9 and never got bullied.

hidengosqueak · 31/08/2018 17:36

Well I think they are awful but dd2 and her mates are all wearing them and the chunky version also in Clark's. They are part of the 'it' crowd so hopefully your daughter will be fine .

OpalTree · 31/08/2018 17:36

No vans or trainers allowed and they wouldn't get away with it

Twofishfingers · 31/08/2018 17:37

I work in a secondary school. Dr Martin shoes (not the boots) are very popular both the traditional model (lace up) and the one with buckles. www.schuh.co.uk/kids/junior-dr-martens-dulice-black-boots/8307907020/.

Kickers are also popular. Many girls wear brogues, of different types, some with the thinner soles some with the thicker soles.

Kids wearing trainers, converse, any type of canvas shoes will be put in detention immediately we've already received letters about it for the coming year.

Pieceofpurplev · 31/08/2018 17:38

Even ballet flats and Mary Janes are not allowed at my school as the whole foot needs to be covered for DT etc. Trainer and Vans = isolation.
Luckily brogues are fashionable at the moment

OpalTree · 31/08/2018 17:41

I personally prefer the Hamble oaks to the ones on top of the box in the photo

mum11970 · 31/08/2018 17:42

My dd is going in to year 13 and has these Dr Marten Polley’s this year. She has hijacked my lace up dr martens towards the end of last year and has worn brogues in the past.

Loopylou6 · 31/08/2018 17:42

Dd says they're fine, but she would recommend getting the non patent ones as they scratch easily and look a mess

KnotsInMay · 31/08/2018 17:42

Boys and Girls at our mixed comp (strict about shoes) wear Kickers.

Anything remotely trainer-style, even if in black leather, would result in them being sent home, so I am fascinated to know what Converse are allowed!

I think chunkier brogues, like the Schuh ones, look better, but can you find out from someone who was there last year what they wear?

LoniceraJaponica · 31/08/2018 17:43

I wonder if schools' strict footwear policy has contributed to the popularity of brogues for teenagers?

FupaGlory · 31/08/2018 17:44

My Dd wears these! Y10 this year.

tomhazard · 31/08/2018 17:45

I work in a secondary school. Trainers and Vans are not allowed and most girls wear brogues. Those look like what many of them wear

3girlmama · 31/08/2018 17:46

I think they're fine!

steppemum · 31/08/2018 17:47

Those DMs link by mum11970 wouldn't pass at our school due to the non black sole edge.
Really does depend on the school

mogloveseggs · 31/08/2018 17:47

Dd had brogues in year 7 and clarks loafers in year 8. She’s gone for these this year clarks
