Are these shoes acceptable for high school?

Hi,

Dd starts high school next week and I really don't have a clue what shoes to get her!

She doesn't have friends yet (struggles socially) so can't compare.

We were in Clarks earlier and I was asking the assistant who looked very young, what she thought of these shoes she'd picked out and she said that some girls would wear them, but most will still try and get away with trainers and Vans. The way she said it suggested that "some girls wear them" actually meant 'the girls who get teased wear them'.

My DD already stands out as being quite different, so just want to make sure I'm not making her stand out more. I know that sounds awful, but I'm sure some of you will understand.

TIA

Not all schools allow DMs - they insist on a black sole.

You need to study the uniform policy, OP.

hendricksy · 31/08/2018 17:51

All the girls wear brogues here .

SoupDragon · 31/08/2018 17:51

They’re absolutely fine. DD (Y8) chose similar ones from Clark’s that have a lower heel.

The school my dd is going to allow leather vans. They didn't fit her properly so we have got similar from red or dead.

I believe lockers are also popular. Do you have a lesson cal fb you can ask optimism on what they wear at that school. There have been a few similar posts on ours lately.

Schuh have a great selection of shoes - they had some own brand brogues that were nice. I have also seen lovely de martens brogues in sole trader I think but they were over £100!

upsideup · 31/08/2018 17:52

If your dd likes them then I would get them, its very unlikely she will be the only one wearing shoes like that or than anyone would notice.
DD who is starting Y7 has dr martins, seems most fashionable shoes are patent leather or more chunkier ones.

IggyAce · 31/08/2018 17:53

My dad going into year 7 has chosen these. I insisted on a lace up over ballet pumps because she will be walking. Her school has banned the ted baker and Vivian Westwood style ballet flats as well as anything that is a trainer. Policy was smart black leather shoe, no boots.

rainingcatsanddog · 31/08/2018 17:56

Brogues are the most popular type of shoe for girls.

The people who said they are awful clearly don't know any teens. Brogues are more supportive than their predecessor ballet shoes and practical in all weather. My dd has been wearing brogues for 6 school years (Clark's Selsey Cool) but I usually see girls in a chunkier heeled brogue like Kickers. Our school specifies leather shoes. Vans would result in a uniform mark and letter home saying that they must be replaced.

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 31/08/2018 17:59

DD is going into Year 10. She wears either brogues or DM-style shoes, sometimes from the women's section sometimes from the men's (she's a size 7.5) She says her friends wear the same, plus Mary-Janes - her school's uniform code is pretty strict. FWIW, she also gets her trousers from the boys section because they're longer, they fit better (she's tall and slender) and they have real pockets.

TheDishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 31/08/2018 18:02

Nah I think those Clark's one's are awful, I only left school 5 years ago surely I'm not that out of date? The patent one's are nice but not the other ones. Nothing wrong with brogues, the shuh one's are nice but those Clark's one's look a bit round in the toe, it makes them look frumpy. I would say a chunky brogue is the way to go, like the shuh one's. I wouldn't go straight in with doc martens, they are fashionable in some places but not others.

topcat2014 · 31/08/2018 18:04

At DD school they need to be able to be polished. Thus no patent leather.

Surely the point of school shoes is to look awful anyway?

WhirlyGigWhirlyGig · 31/08/2018 18:04

My dd always wore brogues. If she'd tried to wear vans or trainer types we'd have been phoned and asked to pick her up. Her school was very strict on uniform.

Monny1 · 31/08/2018 18:08

They are perfect for school.

MrsChollySawcutt · 31/08/2018 18:11

They are fine, most of the Y7s have brogues at DDs school. It's the Velcro strap that is dreaded around here. Now DD is Y11 prefer Doc Martens. She had the Polley Mary-Janes last year and has gone for brogues this year.

WickedGoodDoge · 31/08/2018 18:11

DD is wearing those this year. She’s in S2 so second year of high school in Scotland. It’s a pretty popular style at her school (strict dress code).

Every school is different in terms of what the dress code says, how that works in reality and what that school's trend is.

The brogues will be safe for just about any uniform policy and practical. I think they have swung back round to being in fashion again.

It's the kind of thing I was wearing in the early 90s before moving on to Docs and the 90s fashions have returned.

OutPinked · 31/08/2018 18:15

Do you have any idea what her friends will be wearing at all? That could give you some idea.

I sympathise, secondary school is an absolute minefield as are tweens and teens Wink. I think those shoes are perfectly fine fwiw but they would have been what the ‘geeks’ wore when I was at secondary. That was many years ago though, things have probably changed a lot since then.

RebelRogue · 31/08/2018 18:16

If she likes them,get them.

GreenTulips · 31/08/2018 18:17

I think the lady was trying to say most high school kids no longer shop in Clarks.

My kids wound the wear those

Not sure why schools have to have these ridiculous policies, sensible all black shoes should be acceptable.

Junglefowl · 31/08/2018 18:20

They are really similar to some I chose thinking they were quite a popular choice! My dad likes them too

Junglefowl · 31/08/2018 18:20

Dd I mean not dad! My dad hasn’t seen them!

ChairinSage · 31/08/2018 18:24

They are exactly the same as my DD is wearing for school this year. She's 14 and going into yr 10, and very fashion conscious. It's a long walk to school and she had the same style last year - they were comfortable and wore well.

LoniceraJaponica · 31/08/2018 18:24

"I think the lady was trying to say most high school kids no longer shop in Clarks."

I used to buy DD's school shoes in Charles Clinkard, and she invariably ended up with Clarks shoes. Neither she nor I had this prejudice against Clarks that some people have. She had awkward feet and was just happy to find something that fitted properly.

KnotsInMay · 31/08/2018 18:26

What does your teen Dd wear to school McFarty?

JustlikeDevon · 31/08/2018 18:28

Dd's school has a v strict uniform policy and practically all girls wear something v similar. Dd has some like yours last year but has dms (shoes) now for y8.
