Inspired by a thread about hygiene - carpets in kitchens and toilets, I thought it could be interesting to recall some of the diabolical tat from the past.

We are not really sneering at it. It's nostalgia. We call it 'tat' because it's funny to look back at stuff that we wouldn't dream of having today (mostly).
Of course it was 'of a time' - we are all laughing happily at shared memories of this.

Have a 1970's donut - it's been in my bell-bottomed trouser pocket for 40 years, but apart from the fluff, it should be ok! xx

I made one of those string picture things in the Boys Brigade as some craft badge. Was fun making that, I remember the pleasure well, but not certain what the picture was of. I think it was an anchor (the logo of the BB).

Scratchy sofa, swirly carpets and lots of orange and brown.

Gratefully accepted, ta.

Those interested in drinks trollies should trickle on over to Etsy - there’s a 1960s folding one over there. Bobby dazzler.

Anybody remember these - from the 80's? I can't find a good image, but they were similar to this... pictures with glittery sand and water that you could rotate to form a new picture. They were nicer than this version. They were popular around the same time as hologram pictures!

Armi, giggling, yes: exclaiming, yes: 'sneering' - not really - apart from the loo rol cover doll perhaps!

Actually, I really want that table, Shocking.

Claw half a melon? How posh were you, our cheese and pineapple on sticks were stuck in foil covered potato, how 'tother half lived eh Grin

Cliveybaby · 15/08/2018 13:25

gawd... my DP wants a drinks globe! I said I'd think about it in the hope he'd forget... (we're not even 30!)

PuddleglumtheMarshWiggle · 15/08/2018 13:25

Who had the pin and string art?

I went to a park home site recently and have never seen so many plastic gnomes of all sizes, plastic flowers, and plastic animals of all sorts.
Why? If I owned a park home site I would ban them. Talk about cheap and tacky.

These are nice. Lampshades, presumably paying homage to Tommy Cooper

My mum - who is a crafty type - made her own string pictures. And pasta pictures made with different shapes glued to a board and then sprayed copper. And spider plants hanging in macrame holders in front of each and every window.

TornFromTheInside · 15/08/2018 13:34

and I'm ashamed to say, I had one of these - inherited somehow when I was a child.
Didn't know any different then.
It's a money box - for those who don't know. You put a coin in his hand and press a lever, the arm raises and slips the coin into his mouth.

We had this picture in the living room. The whole of the downstairs had the wooden type panelling too.

My Aunty had one of those bowls with the cat and mouse, wish I'd kept it now.

Hushnownobodycares · 15/08/2018 13:40

Shockers I have a very similar tiled table I picked up from eBay a few years back. Love it. They are now going for many £££ more than i paid.

Anyone remember telephone address books like this? I loved my parents one and have been going through a retro phase for a few years. Found one in a jumble sale to go with my 60's hall telephone table/seat Grin

I also loved my Grandma's wall mounted tea caddy. They now go for megabucks Shock

That image of the lady had a 'curse' -
It was SO popular in the day, that whenever there was a house fire, that image often used to be found in the remains, and seemingly without too much damage? it ended up in the newspapers with a campaign to get rid of it!

The actual logic was that it was very popular, so was far likely to exist in many houses, and during a fire, the string tie would burn and fall, causing the picture to land face down and not burn too badly.

This picture was super common too - my mum had it (and the Spanish lady one)

TornFromTheInside · 15/08/2018 13:45

I always called it the Spanish Lady - don't actually know if it was named that. There were a few similar copies of it around, just like the crying boy one. Brings back some memories that.

Spooky. I think she was called Tina.

We had one of these clocks too. I still quite like it actually.

TornFromTheInside · 15/08/2018 13:49

Tina - that's it!
I'm getting my facts mixed up - the 'curse' nonsense was the crying boy painting.

I love the Margaret Keane pictures. I think they were bigger in America though.

BrettAndersonscheekbones · 15/08/2018 13:50

We had one of those string pictures of Concorde done in silver on a black background. Couldn't find a pic on Google. Also had Spanish lady but we used to call her Titsalina Bumsquirt.

DGRossetti · 15/08/2018 13:52

Surprised we've not seen any Athena posters yet. (That's if they did more than one Grin)
