Inspired by a thread about hygiene - carpets in kitchens and toilets, I thought it could be interesting to recall some of the diabolical tat from the past.

I have crochet dolly loo roll holders in my house.

I'll get my coat.....

TornFromTheInside · 15/08/2018 12:00

This was ubiquitous for a couple of years, certainly in Manchester

And you held one on these on your shoulder for comfortable and portable deafness listening

Not to mention 30 batteries for 30 minutes use

Yep, torn I had this one, took it to the beach, played for 10 minutes on batteries!

torn your TV cabinet story made me laugh then I realised I am your mum (not literally obviously...) I love a TV cabinet, my daughter is mortified that we have such a tiny TV, oh well!

My ex boyfriend’s parents had a very large galleried sitting room which was panelled completely in golden pine- Scandinavian ski lodge style.

They kitted it out with an axeminster carpet, a tasselled velour three piece suite and a collection of gilt and onyx occasional tables.

The whole arrangement looked completely bizarre.

DGRossetti · 15/08/2018 12:18

Somewhere, on eBay, sellers are rubbing their hands .. Somewhere, in China, an entire region is being prepared to supply the west with Hostess Trolleys.

TornFromTheInside · 15/08/2018 12:19

We had a 26inch tv. That was a whopper back then. I think tv sizes and waistlines seem to have a correlation!

Velour suite! My mum called it velvet. Her pride and joy. But it was for the posh front room only and was not allowed to be sat on.
To add context, my 'mum' was my grandma who had legally adopted me, so was a generation older than usual

Pong...
Yep, it really did!

@periperimenopause My gran had a coffee table like that. But with much prettier tiles, and the legs were teak. I inherited it and still love it. Admittedly it's in a one of my buy-to-lets now, but they apparently love it too. And the tiles mean that it's very resistant to wear and still looks as good now as it did 50 years ago. So I refute your assertion that those sort of tables are tacky.

Everything else on the thread - absolutely. Oh and yes, gilt and onyx occasional tables. I inherited those too and definitely didn't love them as much:)

Charley50 · 15/08/2018 12:29

I love that drinks trolley.

MyDirtyLittleSecret · 15/08/2018 12:35

If I were the paranoid suspicious type, I might wonder if this man (with the unobtrusive recording device) had been stalking my childhood because ALL of these things in this thread were in my home! It's like you were all there!

Seriously tacky and grim...
TornFromTheInside · 15/08/2018 12:39

She had one of these beauties too... much bigger than it looks. A record player and radio with drinks cabinet underneath!
I played my first records on one of these.

No wonder I'm messed up!

Those camcorders were genius. Why try to hide the recording device when you can simply hide behind the device and nobody can tell who you are!

My past has been laid bare!

That net curtain cover for the loo and cistern I have pnly seen in my Greek granny’sbathroom. Even in the 70 s we sniggered at her Athens chic.

Shockers · 15/08/2018 12:54

I have one very similar to this, but in browns, oranges and greens. My son likes it so much, he scoured the second hand shops for one for his flat. He also has a radiogram Grin.

Who can forget the roller skates you had to walk in, like a set of metal high heels!

I had a pair of those! I used to skate to school until they told me it wasn't allowed. I used them so much the wheels went square.

FedUpWithBriiiiiick · 15/08/2018 12:56

Two words: Pong console 👍

Claw001 · 15/08/2018 12:57

Oh my god torn we had a very similar cabinet, record player on top, cabinet space underneath.

I used to turn the underneath into a house for my Tiny Tears doll, when my parents went out, complete with candles! No babysitters required back in the day!

TornFromTheInside · 15/08/2018 12:57

For the last 30 minutes I've been humming the theme tune to Swap Shop.
Curse you all with a thousand loo roll covers!

what an awesome thread some great memories here

bopfactory · 15/08/2018 13:06

Loving this thread! So many hideous memories... did anyone else have one of those lovely string pictures on the chimney breast? Seem to remember most of my relations having one!

I feel sad that this stuff is being howled over and sneered at as appalling tat - much of it was part of my childhood and I am fond of it.

I’m clearly feeling over-sensitive today. Perhaps a doughnut will help.
