Inspired by a thread about hygiene - carpets in kitchens and toilets, I thought it could be interesting to recall some of the diabolical tat from the past.

So many memories, and absolutely nothing like that in our house (wade whimsy's and China animals).

Anything, can I persuade anyone with a complete eternal beau dinner service with teapot etc? My MIL is sadly parting with her set (reminds me of collecting with an ex boyfriend so I wouldn't touch it)

KeepServingTheDrinks · 18/08/2018 09:19

...I was very excited because I'd never had a continental quilt before
YES!!!! EmmaGrundyForPM I'd forgotten we called them that. We called it that as well. You're right - the word "duvet" wasn't used.

And, re your username, that girl has let power go to her head!

To all of you who are talking about coloured bathroom suites... I read somewhere once that people like a coloured suite so you can see your line of coke better. Just sayin'

My hairdresser has a drinks trolley exactly the same as the pic on page one.

OMG - nicked this picture from upthread because we got one of these as a wedding present in 1999! We used to put mints in it when we had friends over as a laugh!

@TornFromTheInside my now DH persuaded me to buy those exact same Kickers just after we met in 1996, because he thought I looked cute in them. He still won't let me throw them away now!! Grin

Does anyone remember these wine glasses? I got them off my dad who had them for ever.
They don't hold much wine!
Pic is taken on my, er, authentic 80s work top.

If anyone is hankering after retro wallpaper, get yourselves over to Ghent and the beauty that is Priem - still in business!

My Mum had a collection of these beauts. Babysham deer ornaments.

My Dad was a heavy smokers so we had a collection of coloured glass ashtrays. My mum collected glass animals, shown pride of place in the drinks cabinet.

We also had a load of the glass deer with the chains! They’re probably collectibles now, we chucked loads away when my Mum died.

I had a kid size Ewbank! 😆

TornFromTheInside · 18/08/2018 12:43

I like that idea... did it sweep up the children effectively?

Those glass dear! - this is bringing back memories and I may be completely wrong on this - but I 'think' there were related to BabyCham - as a free gift / promotion?
I also seem to recall they may have been Christmas tree decorations. I might be conflating two different things, or my mothers used them as decorations, or they were decorations promoted by BabyCham. I absolutely do remember them though.

My mother had one of these too - I suspect there were millions of them in mother's bedrooms across the country. She seemed to have a sewing needle up her bottom

This thing was (and still is) wonderful. It's a gyroscope - a self balancing thing. You'd wind some string through a little hole, then pull the string quickly to 'spin' it at high speed, then just let it balance on absolutely anything - the end of your finger, a pencil, you name it!

We had "continental quilts" but ours were called sleeping bags 😀

Blue and orange sleeping bags. Which had melted crispy bits from me stuffing my tongs inside to heat up quicker. I always forgot about them and I'm amazed I never set my bed on fire!

Diary of an Edwardian Lady everything. My M and D had the complete bedroom set, bedding, curtains wallpaper the lot. Also a coffee set.

Fartootiredtobeawake · 18/08/2018 14:43

Torn, the deer may have been Babysham ones, as Mum did like Babysham, as well as Blue Nun (for that quality wine Grin).

@IllHaveALargeGlassOfRed

Sorry, only just catching up on this thread.

I think I do remember the 'smoothy jacket'. The ones I'm thinking off were very very cheap, very thin and we bought them from the local sports shops and markets. They were like a cagoule almost???

GetoutofthatGarden · 18/08/2018 15:53

OOps name change fail from meBlush

TornFromTheInside · 18/08/2018 16:08

These doubled as a futuristic ray-gun! (oh yes the did!!!) don't argue with me, or I'll zap you!

I've no idea why mum used a ray gun to whisk stuff though.
