Inspired by a thread about hygiene - carpets in kitchens and toilets, I thought it could be interesting to recall some of the diabolical tat from the past.

You would all love this coffee shop. It's decor is all mismatched 1970's 'tat'. Such fun to eat here and hear people pointing out items from their youth.

Way back towards the start of the thread but it brought a smile to my face, my great-auntie passed away very very unexpectedly last week at a pretty young age in today's terms (67) and while helping to sort through her house over the last week (she rented so need to pass the house back to the landlady in a fairly timely manner) I saw her globe drink cabinet which she has always told me all about (think it was due to me getting my degrees in Geography and probably our shared love of a vodka or five). The rest of the family told me to have it and I'm so excited and so proud to have it sat in the corner of my living room at some point soon! GrinGin Happy Friday MN WineBrewCake

I'm gonna set up another thread eventually and call it Room 101
People can only elect 5 items a day or something like that (cos I know how much crap you lot have).

I had some Tabu perfume , I’m sure it was orange coloured and quite strong , it was very popular though, I must have been about 14

That is so tempting to comment on... but I won't.
Sorry to hear that and sorry it's too soon to make a little joke!

That's not chenille Jane - it's CANDLEWICK and it was ACE!

I wish you could still get it.

TornFromTheInside · 17/08/2018 22:14

Tabu is still on the market - obviously still not sold it all from the 1980s!

Half of this stuff does tend to remind you of loved ones no longer around doesn't it?

I remember shag pile, we found pine needles in it for 3 years.

Pine needles - pffft! That's nothing - you could lose a three year old in the shag carpet in our house.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 17/08/2018 22:21

😂

Penelope I see your pink flowery bedding, and I raise you... purple Grin

Claw001 · 17/08/2018 22:24

It’s been a lovely thread and has certainly reminded me of fond memories of those no longer around, my childhood and happy times.

PenelopeShitStop · 17/08/2018 22:24

Ah yes, shagpile. Not only did we have shagpile carpet in our bathroom, we had it up the side of the friggin bath. I shit you not.

lastkisstoo · 17/08/2018 22:25

@inmyheadimthequeen

And balls, we had little rhymes and the bouncing went, 1. plain against the wall, then 2. under the right leg, 3. under the left leg, 4. through the legs, can't recall what came next. Elastic ropes, that we called Chinese ropes for some reason.

5 was backsie (round your back) and 6 was one handed. I used to bounce them off my poor tenement neighbour's wall for hours Grin

Iirc Chinese ropes were usually shortened to chinkies in the playground Blush

PenelopeShitStop · 17/08/2018 22:26

I think my DB might have had it in purple popocatepetals. Ever so much more manly of course.

TornFromTheInside · 17/08/2018 22:27

Only piles here - no shags

This is a photo of our wallpaper in the living room in the early 80’s. I hope you can see it as it’s a photo of an old photo and I’ve had to crop it a fair bit to cut the people out. We had this on two opposite walls and contrasting zig zag wall paper on the other two walls. That was the same design but the big zigzags were grey and had thinner white and red zigzags. All paired with a brown and red swirly pattern carpet, black ash furniture and a leopard print couch (will try to find a photo of that monstrosity in a minute!)

I give you the famous net curtains. I am not sure if they were meant to be that colour or just permanently nicotine stained

My mum knitted us these by the dozen. We would wear them walking to school until we were out of view then hide them in the bottom of our bags. Did the reverse on the way home.

I wish Torn, she made us wear them till we were 12 Blush

TornFromTheInside · 17/08/2018 22:44

My mum made me wear a balaclava - backwards...

Although that was so I didn't frighten the horses and other children.
