Inspired by a thread about hygiene - carpets in kitchens and toilets, I thought it could be interesting to recall some of the diabolical tat from the past.

Phone index reminded me of this. Any house with teenagers in had one.

Anyone remember these? My great-gran had one in her living room. Droplets of oil would roll down the strings to simulate rain.

Does anyone remember the good old twin-tub washing machine www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1835&bih=1093&ei=EVF0W9mvG6iPlwTDo7y4DA&q=twin+tub+washing+machine+1970&oq=twin+tub&gs_l=img.1.4.0l10.1888.6537.0.10513.18.13.5.0.0.0.194.1226.7j6.13.0....0...1ac.1.64.img..0.17.1146...0i10i24k1j0i24k1.0.wgFUJ1rvThA?

It wasn't plumbed in, had to be dragged out of its space, then had hoses connected to the water, an outlet hose draped over the kitchen sink ... and then we had to be on standby all the time because you had to move the 'washed' clothes into the 'spinner' section?

ALongHardWinter · 15/08/2018 17:17

DameSquashalot - I've still got a couple of those candy striped pillowcases! My late DM donated them to me,from her vast collection, when I got married in 1983. Heaven knows how old they were before she gave them to me,but they are still in pretty good nick!

Anasnake - that ghastly wallpaper reminded me of something similar that my older brothers had put up in their bedroom, when I was about 10 (in 1973). It was a black checker board effect. I thought it looked like a chess board, and made me feel slightly dizzy if I looked at it for too long!

PrincessIsAUnicorn · 15/08/2018 17:18

My DDad had one of these, proudly placed on its own little corner shelf in the living room!!! ShockConfused

AuntPetunia what a good idea with the lock! We had a nice green trim phone. No such thing as a private phone conversation back then!

DGRossetti · 15/08/2018 17:23

Argh !!!! The trimphone.

Showing my age that I remember "Nationwide" had competitions for people to impersonate one ...

ALongHardWinter · 15/08/2018 17:24

Shockers - I'm Grin at the idea of you taping your cassette recorder to the handle bars of your bike! When you say listening to 'Out of the Blue',are you referring to the ELO album? I adored that album and played it half to death. I had a copy in blue vinyl!

Solomonbitestheworm · 15/08/2018 17:27

DG I remember my mum hiding under the stairs and making the noise!! Grin

DGRossetti · 15/08/2018 17:27

Auntpetunia2015

The phone lock ... any teenager knew how to bypass them. (Personally I picked the lock, which was a hobby of mine ... still is Grin)

PanPanPanPing · 15/08/2018 17:32

Or eight-track cassette players? Shallow as I was back then, I had a boyfriend briefly who I only went out with because he had an eight-track in his car and we used to listen to Tubular Bells when we were driving around!

Flippin' mumsnet and its 30 picture limit is killing me

Did anyone have a horn type thing you had on the handlebars of your bike and it made noises like police, ambulance and fire engine sirens?

Also my mum had horse brasses. In a 1970s semi in a housing estate. Was that a thing or just her?

ALongHardWinter · 15/08/2018 17:36

MamaLupine - Roxy Music LP covers were filthy. Oh yes,I remember them! As a naive 10 year old,I can remember being quite shocked at some of them.

tentontruck · 15/08/2018 17:37

This was the bike siren.

My grandma had some quite special red flock wallpaper. This was complimented with a swirly green carpet.

Her drinks trolley is still going for drinks use in my parent's house. We can't bear to part with it.

She always had smoky glasses, and matching glass mugs. They'll always remind me of her.

Troels · 15/08/2018 17:56

Eek my mum had that drinks trolley Much of my teenage drinking came from that She also had those brown glass mugs how trendy was she LOL I had no idea
Grandma had the matching seat and mat for the loo and the loo roll cover Hmm

PanPanPanPing · 15/08/2018 17:56

MissMarple, I'm sure my Mum got some of those from the Green Shield Stamp shop!!

SecretWitch · 15/08/2018 18:06

My mum used to throw fondue parties in the 70’s and serve cocktails from a teak trolley.
I spent the summer of 1976 hooking a rug with a clown’s head on it. My parents wanted to hang it in my bedroom. I said no. I hate clowns.

FlyingMonkeys · 15/08/2018 18:13

We had pretty much 90% of the things on the list. My grandma also had an original soda stream to fix up diluted cordial as a treat. My dad a car phone (removable complete with battery pack - very fancy!).

elephantoverthehill · 15/08/2018 18:14

I'm currently pulling up my decking. Do think that decking will be on the list in 30 years' time. Or it already?

IllHaveALargeGlassOfRed · 15/08/2018 18:16

Does anyone remember playing "scraps" in the 70s? You'd put your individual scraps in the pages of a paperback book, sit on the doorstep with your pal and flip through your scraps, basically showing off your complete sets. Your pal would say "got it. Got it. Got it. Not got it!" as you went through them.

Happy days! Many a happy hour spent doing this!

MissMarplesKnitting · 15/08/2018 18:16

Decking is definitely one. Rat mansion!

Other previous transaction like rag rolling and sponging decor finishes will be on that list too.

I suspect "shabby chic" too at some point.

CasualDress · 15/08/2018 18:19

I was a Bay City Rollers Fan, I had high waisted tartan trousers and long white socks with the BCR faces up the sideGrin

We also had a navy blue bathroom suite, it showed every bit of toothpaste and soap!Confused

And yes to Macrame planters and Top of The Pops albums. My dad collected all of them!

In my childhood lounge we had a 'spongy' green and yellow swirly wallpaper and a brown swirly carpet.

Anyone remember wearing knitted tabbards on top of a nylon roll neck?! all in brown/beige. I thought I was the bees kneesGrin
