Inspired by a thread about hygiene - carpets in kitchens and toilets, I thought it could be interesting to recall some of the diabolical tat from the past.

Solomonbitestheworm Massively outing but we had one of those stags until recently, it was DHs Mums originally. It was on top of a bookcase that I was sorting and came crashing down and hit me on the head - antler first - blood everywhere, really hurt! DH and I burnt it ceremonially in the chimenea Grin

FlorencesHunger · 15/08/2018 16:15

claw001 my nana still has one of those ashtrays and one of the built in drinks cabinets as a pp posted Grin. Her house hasn't been upgraded at all. It's still the same as when I was a child. It is like walking into the past.

Crikey mypoo! Now I know why they frightened me, a bloody accident waiting to happen - impailed by the antlers Shock

SleightOfMind · 15/08/2018 16:19

Solomon
I had those very trainers Blush

PanPanPanPing · 15/08/2018 16:25

Those 'stags' aren't stags. They're probably Impala, a type of antelope found in some countries in Africa. Wooden carvings of them were quite popular, particularly with people who had either lived in, or visited, one of those countries in east and south Africa.

tentontruck · 15/08/2018 16:27

This is so nostalgic. We had so much of this. Macrame, spider plants, orange woodchip wallpaper. I loved my wallabees, worn with dungarees.

We had this coffee table.

My gran used to send us these postcards from her holidays in Spain. The dresses were fabric and sewn on. We thought they were ever so exotic.

Saidthesharktotheflyingfish I think your user name also dates from that era I well remember learning the poem at school and can still recite chunks of it--

Solomonbitestheworm · 15/08/2018 16:35

sleight did yours smell bad too? They were just so big no air got to your feet. Mine were horrendous! I remember going to a friends house and her dad came in and said what the eff is that smell?! And another time we had to hang them out of a window in a flat! Then for ages even when I wasn’t wearing them my feet stunk!
Fresh as a daisy now you’ll be pleased to hear!

TornFromTheInside · 15/08/2018 16:36

Oh yes those postcards!!!

I can remember people at the airport carrying 3ft donkey's into the plane and sombreros to match too.
Those idiots are the reason we have limited hand luggage space today.

Can I introduce you to the centrepiece of the future? To go with your old fashioned hand and foot casts.
I've hidden the name of the company making them.

I remember a friend had a table like that, when I was at school. I was having a coffee in a mug, and remember carefully positioning the mug ... on the wood. My friend laughed, and said it was odd ... everyone did that despite the fact it would harm the wood, but not the glass ...

Solomonbitestheworm · 15/08/2018 16:51

Cabbage Patch- creepy as hell! We were poor - my sister had a cauliflower kid instead! Oh and a little monkey called cheekaboo

TornFromTheInside · 15/08/2018 16:53

Poor?
We were so poor - one year my parents got me an empty shoe box for xmas.
When I asked what it was - they told me it was an Action Man Deserter!

Starlings27 · 15/08/2018 16:59

This thread is making me feel very melancholy. I lost three generations of my family within 8 years of each other, and it's making me think of all the prized and beloved things they had in their homes, now lost and gone forever.

GallicosCats · 15/08/2018 17:02

I'm thinking Ikea furniture will be the tack and tat of the 21st century and in 30 years' time (assuming we aren't frying to death in some apocalyptic drought) we'll be asking each other who had a Kallax or a Billy.

TornFromTheInside · 15/08/2018 17:05

I worked in Sweden for a while. To them Ikea as our MFI. Budget naffness. Serves a purpose I think, but it's looking a bit dated now.

Had tonnes of it when younger - it's what young couples could just about afford
