New Talk Topic - Is this nice?

sandymumsnet · 22/03/2018 16:55

Hello all

We’ve noticed that ‘Is this nice?’ has been a pretty regular question on the boards in recent years - that is, MNers asking their fellow MNers for an unswervingly honest opinion on everything from jeans to ‘brave’ haircuts, from F&B paint colours to kitchen worktops, from tattoos to WTAF crisp flavours.

The advice, recommendations, and occasional ‘are you utterly bonkers?’ responses are generally brilliant, so we thought we’d give “Is this nice?” a proper home.

All you need to do is post a pic or link to whatever you would like advice on, cross your fingers, and wait for feedback.

As ever, we’re giving this a bash to see how it goes, so do let us know what you think!

I like "what do you think of this?", i like having a big bum, though. We shouldn't dress just to make ourselves look smaller, or taller etc.

Why does it have to change us, to be acceptable?

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 24/03/2018 22:25

Sounds good

Zoflorabore · 24/03/2018 23:40

The thing is, it will go something like this...

Poster puts up a picture and waits with baited breath...

First post says " wow it's beautiful " so poster is pleased...

Second poster says " omg op that is fucking horrible, what are you thinking?! "So poster is now most upset...

You may need to put up a disclaimer for the faint hearted/extra sensitive and newbies that you post at your own peril.

This is going to make AIBU? look tame Grin

@KateMumsnet I do agree you need to keep the title as simple as you can and avoid any jargon, acronyms, slang, or MN-specific words. At the same time, you also need to be mindful that you’re trying to cover a wide range of issues in one topic, so the question has to reflect that. “What do you think of this?” is a good compromise.

ElizaDontlittle · 25/03/2018 08:56

Unnecessary but if it stays "nice" has got to go.
I think Birdsgottafly is right deep down - but it's a well known phrase that's not to twee so maybe we just swallow our feminist credentials... just for this bit!!

ReversingSnail · 25/03/2018 08:59

"What do you think of this?" is good.

"Does my bum look big in this?" could be pretty bizarre, when posts are about paint colours, shoes, hats, curtains etc. Grin

MelonKim · 25/03/2018 09:08

no point inthe whole topic unless you add in a poll

I agree, it won't end well.

CanIBuffalo · 25/03/2018 22:46

I'll summarize the whole topic now to save us all the bother and heartache:

OP - Is this nice?
Majority - no it fucking isn't
Followed by various nasty (passive) aggressive reasons why it isn't.
Might as well call it Come and Make Yourself Feel Superior by Kicking Someone Else.

And the irony of my own post isn't lost on me Grin

CanIBuffalo · 25/03/2018 22:48

But YY to The Stationery Cupboard
I bought a bottle of shimmer ink today. I'll let you know if it fucks up my nibs.

Butterymuffin · 26/03/2018 07:28

Pleeeeeeeeease rethink on the Stationary Cupboard.

Yes, this would be great! (Pedant in me points out it needs to be 'stationery' though)

AtrociousCircumstance · 26/03/2018 07:34

It occurs to me this feeds into ad revenue?

Posters will be sending links and pics of products.

It’s like it’s designed to make the ‘MNers swear by’ emails easier to throw together.

Sorry if this has already been commented on, I haven’t RTFT.

ShortandAnnoying · 26/03/2018 08:40

Another vote for changing the title to Is this naice? Grin

FloatyFlo · 26/03/2018 13:29

@Butterymuffin Blush Ive just scrolled back to see if I'd made that fatal error. And yes, yes I did. Oh god the shame. Grin

TempusEejit · 27/03/2018 13:51

I'd much rather MNHQ spent their efforts on locking old threads so we don't keep getting zombies coming up in Active...now that would be nice.

ReversingSnail · 27/03/2018 18:56

I'm using the phone app. After several thread titles in this section, there seem to be an infinite number of copies of the original MN title thread. I'm seeing the heading "New Talk Topic - Is this nice?" repeated over and over. Confused

KateMumsnet · 29/03/2018 08:59

Hey everyone and sorry for the delay.

Right - decision for now: we're going to stick with Is This Nice because
a. as everyone has noted, it's a bit more, erm, 'nice' and therefore less likely to end with lovely newbies being treated unexpectedly harshly.

Also, it indicates at topic level that there is a 'this' - skirt, paint colour, hairdo - whereas 'what do you think of this' seems a bit more vague and could be, for eg, a parking thread. Eg 'What do you think of this? My bstrd neighbour has just blocked my drive'.

Thanks v much for all input though - as always we did think about all your points. And I have had fun, which obvs is nice - still desperate to know about @CanIBuffalo's borked nibs.

CanIBuffalo · 29/03/2018 10:40

My nibs are all great so far thanks and I'm most of the way through a second fill.
Lovely subtle sparkles too.Smile
If there were a Stationery Cupboard, we could organise swaps and decants.

Just sayinGrin
