I agree Anti. I'd feel really uncomfortable seeing my daughter overwhelmed just by meeting another person. We are very sceptical and take the piss massively at Duster Towers when it comes to slebs. My children are very underwhelmed by them (at the moment), although one of them did say they were going to write to Arnold Schwarzenegger yesterday for a signed photo!

TheAntiBoop · 10/07/2016 10:37

We see a lot of celebs out and about so the kids aren't generally impressed by fame. If either were to be impressed it would be ds if he saw his goalkeeping hero - but even then i don't think he would be that bothered. He was a massive emergency services fan as a toddler and has the attitude that a hero is someone who helps you not just someone you admire.

We saw some teenagers screaming over a certain celeb couples son. Dd asked what was going on so I explained. She asked what he has actually done so I said he had famous parents. Why does that matter mummy? That attitude may well change when she hits the teen years though!!

The whole celeb culture is interesting to see play out - The way people think they genuinely know someone just because they are celebrities.

TheAntiBoop · 10/07/2016 10:37

The one who wants arnies autograph - it's because he admires his political career right?

CarlGrimesMissingEye · 10/07/2016 10:42

Thanks ship.

I like Tom Hiddleston. I don't fancy him but I've always liked him. I'm almost worried all this attention is going to spoil him. He's bound to change as a result.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 10/07/2016 10:48

We took DS to a Minecraft installation last year and he was a bit awestruck that he got to meet one of his favourite YouTubers. It was very sweet.
I think it's fine to admire people's work ethic or talent or business acumen as long as it doesn't become some sort of substitute for RL.

TheAntiBoop · 10/07/2016 10:53

Agree place - but I think it's a little sad when the admiration isn't reply for their talent but for the portrayal of themselves or their looks - which tends to be the case for actors. I can't believe Chris hemsworths fans admire him for his acting ability!

APlaceOnTheCouch · 10/07/2016 10:55

A lot of the comments under the Thor article were along the lines of 'He's a damn fine looking man' Grin

TheAntiBoop · 10/07/2016 11:04

Well it's a fair point!

nicenewdusters · 10/07/2016 11:19

Yes Anti, I'm sure my son has been reading up about his time in the world of politics !! I don't think his role in Terminator had anything to do with it, the motor cycle leathers, sunglasses, huge muscles. If he tells me he's going to write to Donald Trump I'm going to lock him in a cupboard and call Social Services myself.

I posted much earlier about my experience of being with a group of people who were "involved" in the world of showbiz, albeit as agents and "knowing people who knew people blah, blah". It was enormously dispiriting.

I was at a small party once where people were literally buzzing around a woman, laughing like drones, and I was informed "it's * !". She was an ex page 3 girl, I had a vague recollection of her name. My friend kept saying !."Oh, she's such a nice person." I'm sure she was, why shouldn't she have been ? They seemed to revel in the fact that they were somehow in these famous people's orbit.

The friend in question virtually destroyed her life by her need to compete with these people in terms of looks, money, etc. She was in a deeply unhappy relationship but it gave her access to this world. Talk about selling your soul to the devil.

SlowJinn · 10/07/2016 11:31

I think an awful lot of celebrities have sold their souls to the devil, along with a lot of their friends and family. They'll do anything to stay relevant and in the news. Also I wonder how many real, genuine friends celebrities actually have? Take Robbie Williams, mega famous since the age of 16, he's had people fawning over him for the last 20+ years. If he suddenly lost his millions and his superstar lifestyle, would anyone, other than his immediate family, help him pick up the pieces?

If Taylor became persona non grata for whatever reason, would the squad continue to be her cheerleaders? Would TomTim still want to be her lover? Would Calvin Harris laugh?

Cocolepew · 10/07/2016 11:48

If I met Debbbie Harry I'd be a snivilling, snotty mess

Whentheshipgoesdown · 10/07/2016 12:08

Slow I think you're absolutely right and interesting you point to Robbie Williams - he seems to be to be an absolute exemplification of why sticking 17 year olds in boybands and promoting them massively is not an enormously good idea for them. I think Rob's family and friends got sucked into it too - see the mysterious semi-celebrity of Jonathan Wilkes. You see it even more with 1D but Tay, too, has her parents and brother named as if they are also celebs in their own right. It must be a very very strange thing, being eclipsed by and effectively living off your children's fame and - not necessarily TayTay, who for all the thirst and dubious taste in mid thirties british actors seems extremely sorted - I think a lot of slebs' friends and families become enablers rather than keeping them grounded. And, while I know a lot of people can take or leave slebs, honestly I'd probably self combust if I actually met Tay. Or Tim. i can't process them as real people!

Listening to TayTay on the radio right now, co-incidentally. Haterzgonnahate. Wise woman.

Freshprincess · 10/07/2016 12:14

I have a theory that Swifty is down under in an attempt to recruit the Hemsworths into her squad cult Thor's missus is pretty blonde famous actress. Liam's with Miley Cyrus. Perfect squad qualifications. and they'd all look good frolicking in the sea in the Hamptons. Tim Is a gateway to more famous squadees.

TheAntiBoop · 10/07/2016 12:16

I don't think miley fits any of the squad credentials!

FrayedHem · 10/07/2016 12:20

Miley Cyrus has publicly slated the squad. Not sure Elsa and Miley are pals either.

Freshprincess · 10/07/2016 12:24

Has she? Maybe not then.

I thought she'd had a Twitter row with CH about Apple not paying royalties. What's better than recruiting your ex's Twitter enemy? That said this might all be bollocks and nothing of the sort happened.

LadyCassandra · 10/07/2016 12:33

Sorry everyone, been packing as we move next weekend so no time for slebbing, never mind schlepping up to the GC for some Tayto watching!
As you are all scanning the Aus DM (and I came to this thread before anything elseBlush) do any of you know if we have a functioning government yet?

SlowJinn · 10/07/2016 12:41

I read somewhere that bets are being taken as to when Taylor will go 'full Miley' - presumably ditching her sweet girl image for sleazy grunge. Personally I think it's never gonna happen, TayTay is too sorted and probably has a life plan mapped out and a spreadsheet documenting every hour of every day.

On the rare occasions when I've been in the presence of slebs, I haven't felt intimidated, just intrigued at a) how small they are and b) how much older they look in the flesh.

EveryoneElsesMumSaidYes · 10/07/2016 12:45

After silently lurcking over the weekend, I have to come out and say I think I've found my natural home. This thread is amazing!!! Grin
I haven't been on MN for a few weeks and come back to a meltdown of evil MILs, DPs and DCs
I'm enjoying the lighthearded silliness here. Do you think there'll be an impromptu BBQ with Thor, Mrs Thor and the litte Thors today. Can see some great 4th July photo ops there.

SlowJinn · 10/07/2016 12:57

Lighthearted silliness is good!

A bbq would be fab, Tayto can hold hands and feed chicken wings to each other, posing madly for the privately hired pap, whilst everyone else gets pissed and has fun.

Cocolepew · 10/07/2016 12:58

I think Miley and Mrs Thor are friends again. They were photographed together before it was confirmed Miley and Thors brother were back together.
I noticed Miley has started to look a bit more conservative (for her) since getting back with TB.

Cocolepew · 10/07/2016 12:59

I can't see Tay doing edgy, she didnt even keep the platinum hair colour.

Whentheshipgoesdown · 10/07/2016 13:10

I reckon if you've got to 26 without getting sleeve tats, cutting off all your hair/growing an ill advised beard or getting papped urinating into a bucket you're unlikely to start now.

EveryoneElsesMumSaidYes · 10/07/2016 13:34

The only slebs I ever met were Percy off Coronation Street, he was just as grumpy as he was on the TV.
I would love for TS to go 'full Miley' It would be great to see here with a few tattos and wearing clothes that look like shes slept in them for a week!

TheSpottedZebra · 10/07/2016 13:56

Percy from Corrie is a great Sleb spot. You've basically met one of our great UK showbiz dynasties. His wife was sister to The Patton brothers, and of course, The Chuckle Brothers, the slightly more famous ones.
