What to call my dd's 'bits'?

Posted here mainly for traffic... need answers!
We are at the stage where my dd needs (?) to have a word for her 'front bottom' (btw, I hate that term) and dh and I are not coming up with anything we like or agree on.
What do you all use? We also have a ds where we happily use willy. Just can't seem to find a similar term for girls that we want to use.
Help!

We use vulva. I found it odd at first but now, no problem.

rebbles · 04/07/2015 06:47

My DH calls both boys and girls a 'winkle'!I like 'mini' for girls bits that's what my mum used to say

crje · 04/07/2015 06:49

Back is bum
Front is bummy

newtothenet · 04/07/2015 06:51

Following this thread because me and my husband are in exactly the same position. I don't want to use a word that can be mixed up with something else (such as penny or Minnie) and it needs to be something that people will understand (for example at the doctors). Perhaps the proper terms are the only way to go?

SaltySeaBird · 04/07/2015 06:53

We struggle with this a bit - I know it's correct but vulva is a term I've never used.

I was brought up saying boys willy and girls willy and don't want to use that either but have found myself saying it, because that's what all my family say.

MyNameIsSuz · 04/07/2015 06:55

When I was little we just said 'parts'. Can't you stick with 'bits'? Doctors would know what you meant!

PosterEh · 04/07/2015 06:55

I taught DD that girls have vaginas and boys have willies but she just says gina. When she gets older I'll tell her more of the proper names.

If I'm talking more generally I just say "bits" as in "wash your bits". Same with ds.

YonicScrewdriver · 04/07/2015 06:59

Fanny?

MumOfOne14 · 04/07/2015 07:01

My little niece always called it her doof. I always called it foof. But I have DS so probs call it willy or winkie.

mckenzie · 04/07/2015 07:09

I would resist giving it 'name' and just call it what it is. Vagina or vulva.

My sister had a weird name for doing a poo. My niece came to stay with us for the weekend when she was very young, crying and crying one time and we wouldn't work out why but she kept saying this word that we had never ever heard of before. Eventually she soiled herself . Turns out this word was what my sister used for poo/no 2.
But it was a made up word that we had no clue about and my neice was too young to know the regular term. It cause unnecessary upset all round.
I'd call a spade and a spade.

MargoReadbetter · 04/07/2015 07:14

The favourite of doctors and adult patients seems to be the down below. Where I work parents mostly call it Minnie.

DevonFolk · 04/07/2015 07:21

I'm absolutely firm on using correct terminology for so many reasons. I also think it's particularly important that girls don't grow up thinking that the bit they can see is there vagina.

DevonFolk · 04/07/2015 07:22

Oops. Their Blush

Iggly · 04/07/2015 07:39

I didn't use vulva either normally but refused to feel embarassed so now use it with no problem at all. We quickly got used to it and obviously DD didn't know any different and was fine from day one.

ExpressNigel · 04/07/2015 07:47

Simple, vulva, vagina and clitoris, right from the start, easy, there you go. And frankly, I don't find we need to use any of them that frequently Grin. No doubt someone will come on and say it's ridiculous because you don't call a kneecap a patella - well no, but that's not because we find the word patella rude or embarrassing. And there's no way on earth I could use some of the cringeworthy, childish names that some people do.

GinAndSonic · 04/07/2015 07:50

Vulva.

No1warnedme · 04/07/2015 07:56

Thank you everyone. Food for thought here. I am not particularly comfortable using vulva because it's not a word I generally use, and we were considering vagina, but it's not anatomically accurate for the whole area. I don't want to use a made up word or something like twinkle.

I wish there was a 'child-friendly' version like willy for penis.

We need to be able to distinguish between her bits and her bottom because she's been doing a lot of exploring lately and I keep saying 'leave your bottom alone' which I can see could become confusing at some stage.

Whipnaenae · 04/07/2015 08:02

Why is that devonfolk?

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 04/07/2015 08:02

I only have a boy ....but my sister in law has 2 girls, she is from the Philippines and they call it pek -pek, I think it's a fab name lol

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 04/07/2015 08:03

I use vagina, I know it's not really anatomically correct but she's only four. A bit like when her ds points to his genitals - I just say penis, he's too little to understand penis, testes and scrotum.
As they get older I will make sure I add more detail.

No1warnedme · 04/07/2015 08:09

Good point, whenshewasbad. I might just do that...

I stumbled across "wee-wee bits" after trying to give directions for DD to wash herself in the bath. "Wash the bits.., the bits where... the wee-wee comes out!"

The others felt a bit too biological for me.

oldsilver · 04/07/2015 08:12

In school, Jigsaw flipping Jack/Jeff/Johnny (new stylee PSHE) taught Year 1s the other week that the "scientific" names are penis and vagina Hmm

TattieHowkerz · 04/07/2015 08:29

We say "girl bits" or "boy bits".

Only on Mumsnet do people insist on their child trilling "Mummy I have some urine on my vulva and labias majora and minora. Please pass the toilet paper".
