I agree that Helen Mirren has had work done - just not as much as some others and after she had established herself as an older actress.

I think the problem is that the careers of so many actresses are based on their looks and there are so few parts for older actresses.

Walk down the magazine aisle in the supermarket and count how many magazines or newspapers have pictures of women on their covers in a context that has nothing to do with their appearance.

But where there are parts for older actresses, surely they are better served by people who look older? These parts do exist, and I agree there should be more of them but younger actors are always going to come up to take the parts of younger characters. So what is the point of being 45/50 and looking weirdly unreal - wrinkle-free but like you are made of plastic and have no facial expressions? It seems to me you then can't do a good job with either a younger or older part.

I think there are so few parts for women approaching 50 and over that many actresses are trying to perpetuate the idea that they are eternally 38.

To be fair acting is a tough industry for everyone - its just so much worse for women.
