Good morning. I have started the week with a rant about getting old before my time here

This weekly series of threads has been great for my blog. Great for hits, great for feedback and great networking and discovery of other blogs. So don't just post and run, try and take a moment to look through what we've all got to offer. There's so much variety and great writing on here.

Also, this week is the MN week for their Miscarriage Code of Care Campaign. MmeLindor has been co-ordinating the blogging side of this so will be able to remind us how we can get involved if we wish.

Can I be cheeky and claim yesterday's post today? It was supposed to beBaby Jake's rocket but artistic interpretation came into play...

Re the miscarriage campaign, I am extremely fortunate in that I don't really have any personal experience to share, but I was thinking about doing a post which is comprised of links to other bloggers' posts as part of the campaign. Could we perhaps have a thread like this one, but specifically for the miscarriage campaign posts this week?

Thefoxsbrush · 09/10/2011 10:25

Hi everyone! I'm just a newbie and have started a blog about all things Christmassy. My first posts are about a georgeous dolls house I'm buying my little girl and an easy recipe for Christmas Chocolate truffles. TheChristmasFox

FlamingoBingo · 09/10/2011 11:18

Good first post, Petite! The thread one, not the blog one...not that that's not good - haven't read it yet!

Here's my linky post of favourite parenting links of the week.

Off to read the others now! :)

BsDad · 09/10/2011 12:53

I'd like to add my voice to the praise given to this thread (and the forum in general). A great place to discover stuff and reach a wider audience.

I've posted athis week about using social stories with my asd son. I'm thinking of developing a page to include social stories others have used successfully.

Ooh, Christmas truffles look good. Do you have any recipes for things that keep? Fridge/freezer space is usually at a premium leading up to Christmas.

stitchthis · 09/10/2011 13:19

Hi everyone. I went to a poetry slam last night.
I was going to post re miscarriage but haven't quite decided what to divulge. As more of my RL friends begin to know about my blog I find I'm questioning content far more. What do you guys do/ think?

Trills · 09/10/2011 13:47

Post on travelling with budget airlines since I have recently come back from holiday.

It has no pictures right now because I didn't take any and I'm not sure what the etiquette is for taking pictures from the internet. I asked here but haven't been able to get anyone to answer (shameless beg for replies).

Trills · 09/10/2011 13:48

I don't know how I feel about posting about personal stuff stitch but in general I think that if people did talk about miscarriage more it would be a good thing.

(sorry, not overly helpful)

PetiteRaleuse · 09/10/2011 13:58

stitch I'll be re-posting my earlier post about miscarriage that I did at the time. I do have some people in RL who read my blog. My general rule is that I never publish anything I wouldn't allow RL friends to read.

So if I do mention people they remain anonymous and when talking about myself and husband/ child I ensure I don't write anything that would worry me if my boss or grandmother read it IYSWIM.

PetiteRaleuse · 09/10/2011 14:02

Trills re pictures - I think at the very least you should credit your source and if possible get permission to use the pictures. Obviously people don't go through all the procedures but for example if you're writing a really nasty review on some supermarket and take a picture from their website they obviously wouldn't give you permission. In that case you know from common sense that you shouldn't use the picture. That's just my common sense rul but I don't use pictures very much so haven't had to put it into practice.

There are some sites which have pics released from copyright so free to use. If you google "free pictures" you'll get loads of sites where you don't have to pay to use the pictures.

Trills, I just replied to you.

Stitch, personally my life, and my blog, are an open book. I am terrible at keeping secrets so I don't bother to try. If I don't want people to know something about me, I just don't speak. I have written about my miscarriage, which I have never done before, and scheduled it to post tomorrow morning.

And my Special Link Sunday is to the MN thread about the code of care.

Trills · 09/10/2011 14:16

Thanks Tee - I have now added pictures, because everyone like pictures.

FlamingoBingo · 09/10/2011 14:28

Trills - I replied to you too.

Petite - you can't just use any image even if you post an attribution. Copyright is opt-out rather than opt-in so you need to check that whoever took the image is happy for it to be used by other people, and under what conditions.

Flickr has a way of searching so that you only find images with a 'creative commons license' on them :)

PetiteRaleuse · 09/10/2011 15:14

That's the official rule but I figure the worst anyone is likely to do is ask you to take it down. But yes you are right it is opt-out (my blog doesn't get enough hits for me to care much so I have never researched it propoerly).

However there are loads of ways people share images "illegally" for example on Facebook - not much ever happens as long as you don't try and pass it off as your own and it doesn't infringe anyone's privacy.

OP posts:
Trills · 09/10/2011 15:17

For some reason I wanted to do it "right". Even though I only get a handful of hits. Must be the prefect in me Wink

Tomisinathewitchescat · 09/10/2011 15:21

Stitch this, I am the same. A lot of people I know read mine. I generally don't discuss really private stuff because of that. At times I do feel I'd like to blog about things I find hard in my life more (I have an autoimmune disease) but feel weird putting it out there. I have thought a few times about re starting my blog and keeping it more anonymous. I would really like to support the miscarriage campaign but I just cannot bring myself to put it down in words.

ScaredTEECat · 09/10/2011 15:57

Petite as someone who creates original art I find your attitude a little disturbing. If you 'take' an image that isn't open source and don't get permission, you are stealing a person's work.

'Everyone does it' is not an excuse. And yes, giving credit is good. Getting permission or not using the image is better.

Copyright is a major issue on the internet and needs to be upheld by all to protect us all. What if someone lifted one of your blogs and only said, as an afterthought, oh yeah, 'petiteraleuse' wrote this?

PetiteRaleuse · 09/10/2011 16:06

I'm not talking about as an afterthought though (if you see my first post regarding the matter above). I am talking about clearly identifying it as being someone else's picture. If you clearly state it is from someone else, are not making any commercial gain and not infringing privacy, I doubt many people would take issue with it. In fact I know a number of photographers who would be flattered to see their (credited) pictures come up elsewhere.

OP posts:
PetiteRaleuse · 09/10/2011 16:31

Have done some research and this seems to be pretty clear on the copyright issue for text and images. It's all about 'fair use' which is what I was basing my comments above on (but only based on what I knew from writing articles etc).

MmeGuillotine · 09/10/2011 16:48

Hello everyone! Hope you are all having nice weekends!

I went to the Romantic Novelist's Association's Regency Day yesterday in London and had an okay (as in some highs, lots of lows) time which involved Georgette Heyer, Regency smells, being under catered for as usual and then bursting into hysterical tears in the middle of Paddington Station.

MmeLindor. · 09/10/2011 17:02

ooh, contention on a bloggers thread.

I have to admit that I nick photos but credit them, and would of course always take them down if there were questions about their usage.

One time I contacted the blogger in question and he did not even reply to my email so I have not been able to write the post as I wanted it.

There is, imo, a difference to be made between using a general pic of, say a cake or a product, and using a pic of a piece of art work. I used a photo of a local artist on my blog and contacted her for permission first. She was delighted to give permission (since it brought her hits).

It is a tricky line to cross.

MmeLindor. · 09/10/2011 17:07

As to the miscarriage posts.

Can I ask every blogger who will be blogging about miscarriage to post on this thread

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/bloggers/1311451-Bloggers-Network-Miscarriage-Week-Guest-Posts-Open-for-Non-Bloggers-to-Tell-Their-Stories

to let me know if you are hosting a guest blogger.

If you are still interested in posting something on another blog (because of privacy issues) then there is still time to get something written.

You can also simply link to the miscarriage campaign and state that you are supporting this campaign without mentioning anything else about it.

MmeGuillotine · 09/10/2011 17:11

I'm sorry for not taking part in the miscarriage campaign but it's something that I still find hard to write or read about.

MmeLindor. · 09/10/2011 17:25

No worries, MmeG.

I have still not written my post. Putting it off, it seems.

In fact, I would suggest we move the discussion off here to a separate blog thread so that those who are not feeling like reading about it can hide the thread.

I will start a new thread. here
