Just in case no one opens a better one

It's my birthday soon, too - in about a week.

I'm contemplating a name change too, probably overdue...

Theresaholeinyourmind · 10/01/2011 13:44

I am sure the Academy is always glad of an excuse to party, Oyster!
Maybe I should change my name too, but I can't think of one.

Have you seen the 'whose voice makes you come over all unnecessary' thread, on Chat? Wink

SpottyPeaches · 10/01/2011 15:55

I have spent all afternoon watching strike back Ep 3 instead of working. I think I may have to write to RA Inc demanding some kind of recompense for my lost time. What shall I demand?

LaVieEnTechnicolor · 10/01/2011 15:58

Well, I must be equally guilty of po-facedness because I think you're quite right about respect and politeness, Theresa. Maybe the only blog I started to read was unrepresentative, but I abandoned it because I thought it was too intrusive and actually quite rude.

As for voices and coming over all unnecessary - and unexpectedly apposite iPod shuffle sequences - there I was earlier, wielding my trowel and planting the bulbs that should have gone in in December, listening to People Get Ready and, next I knew, there was The Voice saying Clarissa, huskily. I nearly dropped my Queen of Sheba, I can tell you.

SpottyPeaches · 10/01/2011 16:00

I don't do Blogs either.

LaVieEnTechnicolor · 10/01/2011 16:02

Perhaps you should demand, Peaches, that RA Inc send round a squad of four muscular men to help with gardening, shelf-installation or some other essential household task?

SpottyPeaches · 10/01/2011 16:07

Great idea!

Grin
LaVieEnTechnicolor · 10/01/2011 16:16

Tut, tut, Peaches!

SpottyPeaches · 10/01/2011 16:23

Hee Hee.

Theresaholeinyourmind · 10/01/2011 16:29

Mumsnet ate my late attempt at a message
Techno, just wanted to say, I stand by the politeness and respect all right, I just thought I had understated the extent of my own mad enthusiasm. I felt guilty of living in a glass house and throwing stones.

Have to dash, back soon.

Have you seen this? Without pausing to think of the ramifications, I seem to have suggested a University Challenge match.

SpottyPeaches · 10/01/2011 16:49

I got there just before you Techno! I think she would be torn as to which team to play for though. I think she just hasn't seen RA on tele for a bit and her head as been turned. Grin

LaVieEnTechnicolor · 10/01/2011 16:53

I don't think I've seen Mr Sewell in anything since Cold Comfort Farm and Middlemarch, but he was (as I remember it) rather scrumptious gifted as an actor. I know, she does sound a bit conflicted, but if she can get enough fellow Sewell academics together, an arm wrestling UC competition could be hilarious.

Oh, had meant to say a party tomorrow sounds like a great idea.

::Goes to look for exciting gifts to bring to the party::

Theresaholeinyourmind · 10/01/2011 17:13

Peaches and Techno, you ladies are bad!

Laughing at the sight of our sallying forth to joust with aficionados of Other Gentlemen, elsewhere on MN.

I thought I had been very constructive, passing on the secrets of a thriving research community (ie Youtube). I love the idea of a number of Academies catering for diverse academic interests (and it's flattering or worrying or both that the existence of this one has been, ahem, noticed). It was Peaches wot dissed Mr Sewell.

::points accusatory finger::

PassTheTwiglets · 10/01/2011 17:26

Hiya peeps. How funny about Uni Challenge - laughing my socks off at that idea!

Peaches, you made me LOL too with your to-do list :o

Techno, I thudded vicariously at the idea of you hearing "Clarissa..." whilst planting!

Re. a party tomorrow - I'm up for it! My birthday is on Wednesday and Oyster is, I think, next Tuesday?

Now, my ved patch. It's about 3 x 12 feet. Some sun in the summer daytime but not much.
All I've ever grown in it is tomatoes and runner beans but we got literally about 2 beans per plant last year and every single year my tomatoes gets diseased :( The only way I have ever grown them successfully is in growbags. I've just Googled 'green manure' as I'd not heard of it before (sounds disgusting :) ) and it would seem that my hour of trying to pull out every single bit of clover was a waste of time then?! Thank you so much, Techno Dimmock!

Rufus Sewell? Ewwwww, no thank you.

Theresaholeinyourmind · 10/01/2011 17:28

Do you think it would be unreasonable of us to deploy the Barry White WMD staight away?

OP posts:
PassTheTwiglets · 10/01/2011 17:29

I also meant to weigh in on the sending presents things. I also find it very odd. We used to get sent loads of stuff for the presenters at work and it never ceased to amaze me. At least half of them were barking, it must be said :(

Theresaholeinyourmind · 10/01/2011 17:29

In the war of the two R's, that is?

OP posts:
SpottyPeaches · 10/01/2011 17:48

OK ladies we need our best ammunition. I don't do that favourites thing but I know some of you do, bring out the big boys!

Theresaholeinyourmind · 10/01/2011 17:53

Oh yes, some of the Lucas vids are exquisite.

And we mustn't forget the Michelangelo.

But we don't really need to fight do we? We know who is The Man.

OP posts:
SpottyPeaches · 10/01/2011 17:58

No, tis not a fight, well certainly not a fair one with our armitage armoury. Just a little challenge requested by Techno.

LaVieEnTechnicolor · 10/01/2011 18:02

Oh Lordy. Have we declared war on the Sewell Academy before it's even got started? I was imagining more of a friendly rivalry - a Yale to our Harvard.

::gets all pacifist::

Still, if it is a war, we know someone who's, ahem, a good operator behind enemy lines. And as for Barry White as a WMD - are we going to drop him on them?

::RIP The Walrus of Love::

Twiggy - If you're going to use that clover as green manure, make sure you really dig it in so it rots. You don't want it popping up between next year's prize veg. Tomatoes are never very happy in shade. And are you sure you've been growing outdoor varieties - some are best in greenhouses and will mope outdoors, especially in shade. How good is the soil? Growing potatoes is pretty easy and the digging helps to break up the soil. You could try salads if you're efficient at removing slugs and snails (small children can sometimes be bribed incentivised to do this). Carrots? Courgettes?
