Welcome to the new common room! Grab yourself some Twiglets and a glass of Chateau Gisborne or some Polish Cordial and come on in - the water's lovely!

Yes, in touch with his feminine side is good in any man (perhaps not being in touch with his feminine side underlies Guy's undoing?) but Mars just looks a bit too spindly to be , well, Mars.

My book group re-read Wuthering Heights recently and the consensus was that when we were teenagers Heathcliff seemed thrilling but now he seems like a bully and a manipulator.

Theresaholeinyourmind · 03/12/2010 22:40

I guess as we grow older we recognise the downside of masterful men--they are control freaks.

Here's a good candidate for the new Mars painting. He's got sideburns too.

MrsLucasNorth · 03/12/2010 22:47

I seem to remember her being a bit of a nightmare too as did my dad, although neither of us have read the book for decades.
Have just encountered an unexpected saucy bit in the Golden Hour!

Bodenbabe · 03/12/2010 22:48

Actually, Marian looks more like Mars there!!!

Oooh,MrsLN, what episode are we talking?! Am getting frustrated that I still haven't had time to watch ep4.

I think it's all too do with that very fragile boundary between masterful and bullying.

Hmm. Venus and Mars, indeed. To lower the tone, again. I've been reminiscing about the glory days of Wham! Boys in leather kiss girls in pearls.

Theresaholeinyourmind · 03/12/2010 22:55

D'ya think, Boden? Someone found that comment of yours very funny

asmallbunchofflowers · 03/12/2010 22:57

MrsLN - Is the saucy bit the scene I posted earlier? If so, Boden, look for my link called Aaaahhh Dr Track, but send Mr Boden out of the room first.

asmallbunchofflowers · 03/12/2010 22:59

Oh, Theresa, I laughed so much at that last one that I had to give The Poet an explanation.

Theresaholeinyourmind · 03/12/2010 23:01

Ah, bless, Flowers. He does go for it when he gets a chance.

I can remember thrilling to tales of sweepy off your feet type heroes in my mis-spent youth, but now they just make me want to smack them. It's the cynicism you tend to accumulate over time that won't let you buy into it as romantic, just bossy.

Have just had brainwave. Mr Armitage as Maxim de Winter.

Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again.

MrsLucasNorth · 03/12/2010 23:07

I'm talking about the tickling scene early in episode 3 - does it get better then? Grin

Haven't had much chance to look at YT as have had either DH or DD constantly hovering due to.being snow bound for the last few days Angry

asmallbunchofflowers · 03/12/2010 23:10

Nah, that was my link MrsLN (well, I assume it was, as it involved tickling but I have no way of knowing which episode it came from). It's all about where your imagination takes you, not what you see on the screen!

Bodenbabe · 03/12/2010 23:13

Theresa, I am all at the pic of Guy finding my comment funny. you do realise he is looking right at me there, yes?

OP posts:
Theresaholeinyourmind · 03/12/2010 23:14

I love that film and the book but never liked Maxim at all. But Mr Armitage could certainly do wonderful things with it, and add new dimensions.. The costumes would be great, too, if it were to be set in the original period. Surely it has to be.

That opening line is one of the most evocative ever.

MrsLucasNorth · 03/12/2010 23:16

Did you not see the end of it, where dinner's ready and it's "who moves first"...

She has her hand, ahem, somewhere, and he doesn't visibly move, but....

asmallbunchofflowers · 03/12/2010 23:18

Boden - Did you really not realise what she was doing, to break his composure? No wonder you young girlies have to have everything depicted in graphic detail. You have no powers of deduction. Wink

Theresaholeinyourmind · 03/12/2010 23:20

It's the changing expression on his face in that ''Cheating'' vid that gets me.

MrsLucasNorth · 03/12/2010 23:20

C'mon now Flowers - I'm the youngest girly at the Academy and I knew exactly what she was doing ( and boy was I Envy)!

asmallbunchofflowers · 03/12/2010 23:21

Exactly, Theresa, Maxim is a dreadful person but a great role to play, I would think. And calls for someone who can be both handsome and sinister. Mr Armitage can, I think, be relied upon for both of those qualities. Imagine the party scene with Maxim in evening dress.

asmallbunchofflowers · 03/12/2010 23:25

Theresa has never divulged her age.

MrsLucasNorth · 03/12/2010 23:25

Dh has just deleted Dibley that I re order earlier in the week - had watched it but even so...grrr!

MrsLucasNorth · 03/12/2010 23:26

That should be recorded...

Bodenbabe · 03/12/2010 23:27

Sorry, crossed posts. MrsLN, the tickling scene is as good as it gets up to the end of ep3 but not sure what is to come in ep4. And I hear you on the hovering of kiddies! Good Lord, it took me about half an hour to get through an important piece of research this afternoon...

I had realised where her hand was but I guess I had seen that scene (heh heh) so many times that I was taking it for granted and assumed you meant something else. But now you mention it, I can't remember a bit about dinner being ready... hmm, think I need to go over this set text again to make sure I fully understand the metaphors and underlying imagery therein.
