As title.

If you're going to raise climate issues please make sure you have your facts right before you post. There is a lot of incorrect PR and social media comment about plastic turf going around at the moment.

Too infirm and too lazy to manage a real garden. Don't want to have to pay a gardener.

It looks lovely.

Come on then. Let’s have a picture of this lazy man’s grass - and I’ll tell you honestly if I can’t tell the difference.

Imdunfer · 30/06/2026 20:59

Teanandtoast · 30/06/2026 20:56

How big is it and how much was it please?

Maybe 15 ft x 10ft but I can't give you a price as we had patio laid, a path widened and a lot of raised border 2ft high put in at the same time. The ground preparation is not cheap if it's done properly.

Please at the very least do a see all on my posts and read my previous 3 answers to that demand.

If you think my 10ftx15ft patch of fake grass is having a profound effect on the world around me then the educational defecit is yours, not mine.

You have a 10ft x 15ft patch of lawn and the only
thing you came up with was fake grass? That’s some imagination you’ve got there.

its tiny, there are so many other things you could have done that would look a million times better.

do you genuinely not give a shit about birds, insects and wildlife?

Coconutter24 · 30/06/2026 21:08

Imdunfer · 30/06/2026 20:54

We've never had fox poo in the garden and I can't think of any reason why there would be any now especially now we have fake grass. We leave nothing they can eat and the access is very limited.

Edited

I didn’t mean you’d start getting foxes it was more a question of whether you’ve smelt it before.

BunnyLake · 30/06/2026 21:18

Puzzledandpissedoff · 30/06/2026 20:18

Just under £3000 Bunny lake, and it's not a huge lawn ... though that did include absolutely everything from disposal of the old turf to several top dressings on the new

Just hoping the ants get some sense of decorum and leave it alone now. I did stand out there explaining it to them, but I don't think it went in frankly Blush

I don't think I would put in artificial grass anywhere with a heavy deciduous leaf fall, but then that was very high up on my list of things to avoid when I chose the house

Edited to add it's even worse if there's a blossom tree, @Imdunfer. There's a gorgeous ornamental cherry at my son's place, and though it's a magnificent sight in the spring the "lawn" gets hit twice with the blooms and then the leaves

Edited

Ooh that’s a lot 😧 I have got someone coming to give a quote on getting my garden to some sort of presentable state. I only took my eyes of it for a short while and it’s gone beserk 😩. I can see why fake grass can be tempting. (if only it were eco friendly).

It's not really a relevant question on this thread unless you think it will be getting into my fake grass, use it?

I've smelt all sorts of animal shit I used to live on a farm.

LOL. You’re overestimating my interest. Anyone willing to stand by their decision can own it with a photo. Unless it looks like… actual plastic.

I am just baffled that someone has come onto Mumsnet to boast they have put a hideous plastic rug in their garden and are deluded into thinking it actually looks nice Confused Poor wildlife and poor neighbours who have to see and smell the stinky monstrosity..

Edited

I have plastic grass and I highly douby my ‘poor neighbours’ give a shit tbh. They’ve concreted all their garden and love an occasional bonfire.

People aren't always limited just by their imagination when it comes to gardening. OP has mentioned infirmity.

Re insects and wildlife (not your question, but one many PPs have raised!), it's not as though she has sprayed Agent Orange around the entire neighbourhood.

PrettyPickle · 30/06/2026 23:19

Imdunfer · 30/06/2026 18:26

Given its low use, 20 years minimum, we'll probably be dead. I'm aware of 12 year old installations that still look almost new.

When it has to be scrapped it will probably fuel an incinerator driven power plant with carbon capture on it. If someone wants to replace it with turf that will be a lot easier than replacing the "lawn" that was there.

@Imdunfer Sorry OP, you sadly have a shock coming. Read my earlier post about the care of artificial grass. It won't last 20 years without proper care. You sound very cocky and sure of yourself and don't seem interested in any constructive advice or questions raised by anyone, so why post unless to brag!

I'm not really sure what the point of the post is otherwise.

Hallywally · 30/06/2026 23:21

Imdunfer · 30/06/2026 18:58

To be honest I wouldn't lay a huge lawn with it. It is so "perfect" that a very large area would probably look very false.

To be honest, I’d just get it flagged or anything low maintenance if I could afford it (can’t afford to anything 😂). My house isn’t worth a great deal but has a bizarrely large garden/lawn which I find really hard to keep on top of.

Plasticdreams · 30/06/2026 23:29

Imdunfer · 30/06/2026 20:23

OK, thanks, I won't. I love my decor but unlike many in this social media influencer age, I don't need anyone else's approval to love it.

Influencers love a bit of fake grass though don’t they. It’s normally bare fences, no plants or fake ones, and fake grass. I suppose it’s very fitting when the influencer world is so fake!

I’ve had mine for 6 years and it looks as good as the day it was first laid. All we do is pick up a few leaves 2/3 times per year and pull out the odd weed, and that’s it. 🤷‍♀️

This is not what I am hearing from other people with installations up to 12 years old, so I'm sure you'll forgive me which of my sources I will give more credence to. The area couldn't be less challenging to a plastic lawn achieving a venerable old age other than still to be rolled up in a warehouse.

I wouldn't have a clue, I never see any influencer stuff unless it's posted about on MN or hits the headlines for the wrong reasons.

Since new 4 years ago. 4 years we fought to make the lawn grow even half way decently.

Well frankly among the thousands of hectares of prime green farmland that have been built round this town in the last 10 years, it won't.

We have the same problem of increased house building in our rural area. Our response has been to set up a community wildlife group and encourage people to rewind their gardens.

That's excellent. I don't want a wild garden I want a flat open area and paving and/or aggregate don't appeal.

Clearly, any ‘lawn’, whether real or fake, requires care and maintenance, in order to look good. Mine certainly looks as good as the day it was laid, over 12 years ago. I use a soft rake for fallen leaves and blossom from my myriad trees and shrubs, and any weeds are easily pulled up.

I have plenty of wildlife in my garden too. ‘Real’ grass isn’t necessary for that, if you have other plants.

Contrary to what you say, the OP answered questions (and more politely than some posters deserved), and didn’t require advice.
