As title.

If you're going to raise climate issues please make sure you have your facts right before you post. There is a lot of incorrect PR and social media comment about plastic turf going around at the moment.

It devalues property, as people want to remove it and replace it.

That depends on what garden it replaces. It certainly has not devalued our property, quite the reverse.

Do you have the same concerns about your children wearing plastic clothes?

Yes absolutely.

PinkMagpie · 30/06/2026 18:38

Marmalademorning · 30/06/2026 18:29

So why the focus on plastic grass then? Why not ban all plastic clothing? Why not ban flights abroad for foreign holidays?

It’s nothing more than snobbery and an opportunity to virtue signal.

Why actively choose to remove a lawn which improves the quality of the environment in your garden and replace it with PFAs and plastic

Imdunfer · 30/06/2026 18:39

MinglyMadly · 30/06/2026 18:31

But what if everyone took your attitude?

They don't, as this thread clearly shows.

But do you know what, carry on if you want to advertise that you are tacky and have no taste

Marmalademorning · 30/06/2026 18:39

PinkMagpie · 30/06/2026 18:29

OP do you have any health concerns for your children being exposed to the chemicals on it?

My son’s school has a 3d pitch made from plastic which the school regularly uses for their PE lessons. I’m not aware of any parents who have requested that their children dont participate in any lessons involving the pitch 🤷‍♀️

You haven't tried to sell it yet.

It would be an utterly meaningless photo to show nothing but a small patch of grass. If you want to see that, look up an artificial grass supplier and look at top of the range 40mm stuff.

For various reasons I've seen more artificial grass than most people.
It's sensible/understandable to not want to put your own home on the internet, but I'd like the link for the supplier you used please - the exact grass you bought.

Not all AG is created equal as you know, and you seem to have hit on the holy grail that no other person has, so I am wondering what this grass has that no other supplier has managed to do. And also why everyone else is buying shitty stuff instead, even if it is the same "top of the range" 40mm spec as you have.

Depends what you define as "improving the environment" and for whom.

Are you going to add some plastic flowers to complete the look?

You might laugh but our new next door neighbours have done just that. Plastic grass and a trellis full of plastic flowers.

Not snobbery. Just taste

If I couldn't manage a lawn or just didn't want one I'd get it all flaged and put large earthenware tubs with flowers and bushes in .
At least that way I'm not adding yo all the plastic in the environment and it's easier to clean.

What does 'flaged' mean?

AndStand · 30/06/2026 18:45

Imdunfer · 30/06/2026 18:26

Given its low use, 20 years minimum, we'll probably be dead. I'm aware of 12 year old installations that still look almost new.

When it has to be scrapped it will probably fuel an incinerator driven power plant with carbon capture on it. If someone wants to replace it with turf that will be a lot easier than replacing the "lawn" that was there.

You're hoping it'll eventually go to an incinerator power plant. In reality someone will rip it up and it'll go into landfill.

CosyDenimShark · 30/06/2026 18:49

MinglyMadly · 30/06/2026 18:29

But just because cars tyres etc do that does not mean it makes no difference to add to the micro plastic issue by removing something natural and replacing it with plastic.

People keep trotting this argument out but one does not preclude the other. 🙄

I understand that 🙄

But why is it JUST the artificial lawns that Mumsnet have a complete meltdown over?

You never see the same vitriol thrown at car drivers, whose cars drive on roads where something natural has also been removed to make way for them. That's a far, far bigger problem than Debbie in No 46 putting an 8ft astro in her garden!

Why is it that only artificial lawns are the devil?

There is certainly an element of that isn't there?

I understand the people who are passionate about the environment. I respect their views where they've been politely explained.

I just see so many people everywhere acting in ways that are far, far more irresponsible for the planet than I do, that I'm not prepared to forgo the pleasure that garden makeover has given us.

I'm sorry if our choices genuinely upset people but you can be thankful, maybe, that there is a limited time left for us to damage the planet. Meanwhile we'll continue to make relatively low impact choices that work best for us.

We moved into a house with one and I am DESPERATE to get rid of it. We have a dog so it stinks, it’s boiling underfoot in the heat and I won’t let DD play on it. It’s so much money to get rid of though so we’re stuck with it for now

Stick on the local selling pages. DD got rid of hers in 48 hours. Somebody wanted the vile thing . . .

I truly believe that one of the greatest evils is the number of people driving enormous 4x4s that have now been so gonfléd that they won't fit in a supermarket parking space.

The resources to build it, the miles per gallon or kilowatt, the plastics from huge tyres on a heavy vehicle that they leave on the road, the damage they do to the road, the sheer "mine is bigger than yours" of them. They are an environmental plague*.

*I do not include people who need them for their occupation/towing ability or any other genuine need.

To be honest I wouldn't lay a huge lawn with it. It is so "perfect" that a very large area would probably look very false.

Given the rest of the thread this is hilarious.

From people desperate to get rid of the dreadful things we switch to the being a ready second hand market 😁

I'm sorry I don't have a clue who the supplier was, I trusted the guys to give us good stuff as they said they would. It's different shades on the surface, it's got brown undergrowth, it will take a "stripe" if you choose to create one with the right machine (they put one in, we are choosing to let it disappear). To be honest I thought the other company that quoted 50% more had stuff that looked even better but we are very, very happy with what we've got.

Oh I worry about my own sanity often, but never because of my choice of plastic grass 🤣
