As title.

If you're going to raise climate issues please make sure you have your facts right before you post. There is a lot of incorrect PR and social media comment about plastic turf going around at the moment.

So many things wrong with the post but my neighbours have a plastic lawn and are happy with it. They did have a rabbit until it got taken by a fox but I wonder what the rabbit made of the plastic lawn?

I would not keep a rabbit on it, those droppings would be really bad news, before you even think about it not being able to nibble it.

The changing of the seasons in the garden was marked by the ratios of moss, mud and weed

And anthills, @Imdunfer - don't forget the anthills!! Shock

My own once-beautiful real lawn has been wrecked by them and it's cost a fortune to get it back ... something I often wonder about when looking at the excellent fake stuff which was already in situ at the house bought for my disabled son

You're not going to destroy the planet with a few square metres of the stuff, but what you have done is introduce one of the only things some MNers still see fit to judge. I wouldn't worry though; many will be off on gas guzzling summer journeys soon, so won't be around to see it

A tip for getting rid of ants in a lawn is to put a bucket over the ants net on a hot summer evening. When you come down in the morning a small army of ants will have gathered in the bottom (or top as it's upside down) of the bucket.

Carefully turn the bucket over and empty the bucket somewhere you see fit. Keep doing it. They get fed up pretty quickly.

Our friends have done there’s massive issues in hot spells couldn’t use it

how was yours

Not to mention the nauseating stench when all the local cats pee on it - it’s eye watering in hot weather ( my neighbours have just ripped theirs up for precisely this reason, you could smell it from 20 yards away)

DarkchocolateAndtea · 30/06/2026 18:11

PolkaDotPorridge · 30/06/2026 18:01

It’s not unprovoked. Anyone who has fake grass and thinks it ok is daft , she said ask me anything so quit moaning!

The AMA is about the grass, not a free pass to insult someone's home decor choices they may or may not have. Trying to use 'ask me anything' to justify personal snobbery is a massive reach. You're of course allowed not to like the grass, but asking about imaginary furniture was crass.

Poor little chap.

lol, you want us not to refer to the heavy carbon footprint, the fact it takes about 15 years to degrade, usually in landfill, the fact it kills eco systems , sheds micro plastics , and contains harmful chemicals and heavy metals that can be absorbed by human skin or ingested by children or animals.

oh and avoid that it always always looks like plastic grass up close I assume?

I did not ask anyone not to refer to carbon footprints.

My husband has just informed me that he walked on the grass in his socks on the hottest day of the week last week, 35c here, and could not tell the difference between it and how the grass used to be. He says it emphatically was not too hot to walk on and would not have burnt a child or a dog.

My cat would not allow another cat in her garden, but there are very few free range cats in this area, to many of them die on the roads.

I will test the heat off it myself next time the weather hots up.

I guess so yes. The male owner of the rabbit was devastated as he let the rabbit into the garden in daytime and the foxes just happened to be around. So sad. When I had a rabbit and guinea pig as a child they had a chicken wire enclosure for the grass but under a very shady area in the garden.

BathersOnTheLine · 30/06/2026 18:26

If your garden is a shady as you describe OP the heat problem issue probably isn't going to be a problem there.

I wish I could have had the opportunity to get a lawn or pretty alternative going in your yard. I love a challenge.

Imdunfer · 30/06/2026 18:26

Okiedokie123 · 30/06/2026 18:08

How long is it expected your fake grass will look nice for? What will you do with it when it looks awful and "needs" replacing?
Ive read its much hotter than actual grass - this is bad for dogs, cats paws. Doesnt that bother you?
Are you not bothered about the obvious negative consequences of covering the planet in plastic as well as buildings and tarmac/concrete?

How is plastic grass better than real grass?

Given its low use, 20 years minimum, we'll probably be dead. I'm aware of 12 year old installations that still look almost new.

When it has to be scrapped it will probably fuel an incinerator driven power plant with carbon capture on it. If someone wants to replace it with turf that will be a lot easier than replacing the "lawn" that was there.

I hope everyone moaning about microplastics from artificial lawn never drive a car or use a washing machine. Car tyres shedding and synthetic fibres from clothes are two of the biggest contributors to plastic in our natural environment.

But just because cars tyres etc do that does not mean it makes no difference to add to the micro plastic issue by removing something natural and replacing it with plastic.

People keep trotting this argument out but one does not preclude the other. 🙄

PinkMagpie · 30/06/2026 18:29

OP do you have any health concerns for your children being exposed to the chemicals on it?

Marmalademorning · 30/06/2026 18:29

Safarisagoody · 30/06/2026 17:54

its also being worked on to be reduced. Two wrong don’t make a right. We don’t need to add to the problem,

So why the focus on plastic grass then? Why not ban all plastic clothing? Why not ban flights abroad for foreign holidays?

It’s nothing more than snobbery and an opportunity to virtue signal.

Not true. Our neighbours have very expensive and realistic (according to them) plastic grass, which 5 years on has faded to a very dull green. They have dogs and every time it rains there is a run off of dog pissy and shitty smelling water, from the urine and debri that has accumulated under the plastic grass. It’s gross.
Also, when it’s above say 27° the dogs can’t walk on it as it’s too hot.

Their drainage is wrong.

No of course it's not OK to keep adding to the problem but while millions of parents in this country never mind the rest of the world are using "disposable" nappies and almost everyone in the country wears at least some synthetic clothes, I refuse to get exercised about a one off installation of an outdoor carpet which will fuel a clean power station at some time in the far future.

But what if everyone took your attitude?

Judging from this thread, that seems rather unlikely.

Whyohwhy1973 · 30/06/2026 18:34

Imdunfer · 30/06/2026 15:03

We absolutely love it.

It did cost a lot but the whole garden was made over with new raised beds and a patio.

I believe the makover will improve the property value and the way it has been done it would not be a significant cost on a £450,000 house to take up the plastic and turf it.

It devalues property, as people want to remove it and replace it.

Do you have the same concerns about your children wearing plastic clothes?

Imdunfer · 30/06/2026 18:35

PinkMagpie · 30/06/2026 18:29

OP do you have any health concerns for your children being exposed to the chemicals on it?

I don't have any children. If I did there are other things I would worry about a lot more than playing on fake grass in the garden, especially when their sports pitches at school are very likely to be made with it.

Our garden fitters came to us after finishing a job at a local primary school.
