Hi OP, if you're still around I have another question. When you do a blood test in your clinic to check for STIs and you are aware that the person already has a BBV like HIV (controlled on meds or not controlled on meds) or Hepatitis B or C do you mark the sample any differently? I understand these are classified as Group 3 and am seeing conflicting information online. Are there any guidelines you could share on this and how are the samples marked?
Thanks

Can I answer? I'm a microbiologist in an NHS lab and we see if a patient has HIV because it may be clinically important in figuring out what infection the patient may have. So HIV dampens the immune system making a person more susceptible to certain infections, like cryptococcus, or fungal infections, or it could be that some bacteria that wouldn't normally be considered an infection may actually be causing a problem.

But the actual sample won't have it literally marked on it, we treat all samples like they could contain HIV, its only when assessing the results we see that
