For clarification I was married to a traveller and had 3 children. So I did go down the traditional route but he was very abusive and a narcissist and I’m now dealing with the aftermath of trauma and years of abuse. But that’s another matter, I wanted to start a thread because I know people would be curious about a gypsy marrying outside her culture.

How old are your children? If they’re older do they prefer to do things the gypsy way or gorger way?

apologies if someone already asked too lazy to read the whole thread

They are in their 20s and they prefer the gypsy values, culture and traditions. They’ve experienced both sides as they have been brought up in a house, went through school and college and have friends from both sides. One is married to a traveller too.

Why do fewer want to then? Do you think it’s mostly cultural or is it more a result of poor experiences in the education system (due to bullying or lack of support etc)?

I think it’s something like 7% Roma enter higher level education vs 37% young people overall. Not sure of the breakdown between the sexes. So I think it may not be as simple as they can if they want to if you see what I mean.

Like I’ve said in a previous post. If they aren’t settled how are they meant to go to school? The councils have failed gypsy’s/travellers by forcing them to move around and not be able to find a place they can call home. Not all are rich enough to buy land or if they are it’s dead money if it can’t get passed so they can live there. Society stops these girls from getting an education not their parents.

@overstimulatedhermit

what do you think councils should do to solve the problem do you think?

Build more sites for them to live on it’s as simple as that.

What stops them from homeschooling or accessing online schooling?

@overstimulatedhermit

and I guess that would make financial sense for the council too wouldn’t it - they can make use of land for that isn’t being used and make some money from rent.

Where is this mythical vacant council land with planning permissions and facilities, near the infrastructure they want to access but nowhere near anything like railway lines or industrial premises?

@Digdongdoo

True. It’s gonna be few and far between isn’t it

Digdongdoo · 07/10/2025 11:30

Well no internet for a start. And if they haven’t had an education themselves what are they going to teach?

They can find this mythical land to build houses.

Who? Councils? Not really. Developers perhaps.

overstimulatedhermit · 07/10/2025 12:00

Because they are on the road travelling from place to place.

Data packages? Public libraries? No internet seems like a poor excuse to not provide an adequate education for you children and severely limit their options later in life.

So the councils don’t own land? They couldn’t find anywhere to to build some sites?

I’ve never had any experience with them tbh and I’m not sure on language. We use a language but I’m not sure if other European country’s use it as well. I’ve seen a lot of videos on TikTok from French gypsy’s and I’d say we share some things in common with them

I'm Irish so know a small bit about Irish travellers but nothing about gypsy culture. What is the name for your language, and where does it originate?

Digdongdoo · 07/10/2025 12:07

overstimulatedhermit · 07/10/2025 12:03

Sure councils own some land, but how much of it would be suitable I don't know. There's also the issue of who pays for it. If people are not settled, they aren't paying council tax - so which council and whose council tax should be responsible for accommodating them?

Come on have some common sense will you.

@overstimulatedhermit

why would someone move around like that ? So frequently? What would be the need?

I'm sorry but I just don't believe you move location every single day. And with data you could learn/teach on the road.

Because they have no where to settle. They travel around the country.

The travellers I know have been settled for weeks. Certainly some time for some homeschooling and visiting a public library.
