You sound increasingly more desperate to discredit the OP everytime you post. A general chat about hows life, how’s the family, oh and my daughter is on Mounjaro because she doesn’t want heart disease to factor in her life due to obesity, and the Dr replying - I’m all for it (plus a bit more of general commenting) is not betraying any confidence.

In fact when I see my dr this afternoon he’ll ask about my son who’s also a patient of his, he’ll ask how he’s doing and I’ll explain what he’s up to and he’ll comment on it in a very general way and say something like, I’m really pleased he’s doing so well, he’s come very far indeed and it sounds as if what he’s doing is very good for him.

No confidences betrayed. No poor bad practice. End of.

I explained to her that there was no advice, just a chat because my dad has been seeing this guy for ten years and needs a good support system, and that one was quickly dropped!

I’m on about 1400-1700 a day (averaging over the last year). I don’t have a PT, nor do I have any ambitions of training for a marathon. I am not trying to build muscle at the moment. I’m trying to lose weight so that I’m not obese and at risk of dying before I hit 30.

You are so young OP, even if you were to lose all your muscle during this process (which I'm sure you won't), you have plenty of time to rebuild, with ease, when you aren't dragging an additional 7 stone up every hill or attempting to press up 7 stone more than the average women. You will be fine and do great.

I'm perimenopausel and have only lost 1.5st of 4-5 stone i need to lose and planking is already easier and squats definitely are. What skinny people don't realise it's that when you are significantly overweight but still reasonably active you are squatting more than them everytime you sit down/ stand up without needing to add weights at the gym, a normal walk in the hills is like them doing it with a weighted back pack (and a massive one as that). Us fatties often have quite good muscles (just well hidden under a layer of lard) by virtue of a 24/7 weights routine!!

I understand entirely that losing the weight is the priority when you’re obese. I’m just making the point that you’re going to need strong muscles and bones when you’re 50. My concern is that WL drugs ruin people’s relationship with healthy eating.

I have a 51 yo friend who’s lost 3 st on Mounjaro. She only eats one doughnut a day instead of the five she used to because she’s less hungry. Her skin is hanging off her because there’s no muscle underneath. She does no exercise because she’s never got into the habit when she was larger and now thinks she doesn’t have to, thanks to this wonder drug. I suspect she’ll be the first in our friendship group to fall and break a hip.

Im not anti-WL drugs per se. The research about the anti-inflammatory benefits of microdosing is interesting. But I think they’re dangerous if people rely solely on them and don’t learn about healthy lifestyle choices going forward.

Not all fat people are the same, like not all skinny people are the same, plenty of people are thin through using smoking and vaping to control appetite. Many fat people do significant amounts of exercise.

Your friend is better off being 'exercise adverse', eating one donut a day and 3 stone lighter, than obese and eating 4 donuts a day. It's not great but it's still better, so be happy for her for that.

Yes, I am looking at building muscle now, but i also know i have a long way to go in terms of fat loss before that should be the priority

@LifeOfAShowGirl I’ve always been an exerciser and I know that because I was, I was able to keep obesity related illnesses at bay a while longer than I would have done had I not been an exerciser. Anyway I’ll have been on Mounjaro a year tomorrow and I think when I weigh myself I’m going to be about 300gms more than the target I’d set myself for tomorrow, and that’s ok 🤣, but I know that without exercise the pound a week I’ve lost over the last year, would probably be less than that. Anyway, one thing that’s struck me is the amount of people Ive met along the way (online) who’ve concentrated on weight loss and done nothing or next to nothing about exercising at the same time and despite trying my best to understand it, I can’t. Surely if people know they’ll lose muscle whilst losing a lot of weight the best thing to do for yourself would be to minimise the loss along the way by exercising along the way?

I always knew I had muscles underneath my fat (snd not just because I was fat)!and once I’d lost a stone or so I could actually see them in some places. And now I’m at target (and I have loose skin), at 67 I have the body/muscle mass of a woman years younger and I just wish people would exercise from day 1 of being on Mounjaro if they haven’t been exercising prior to mounjaro. It will make your end results so much better and is so good for your health.

Im sorry if what I’ve said feels as if I’m getting at you - I’m most certainly not. You’ve really impressed me with your thread but can you maybe have a wee think about adding some exercise on top of the great job you’re already doing on your health and happiness.

Okay, forget weights in the traditional sense as there’s so much you can do that will involve weights without you even realising. Have you heard of functional fitness? If not give it a wee google and see if it’s something you can consider, you’ll still be doing weight training but it’s dressed up as something else and great fun.

Oh I’ll take a look! I really like the look of Pilates etc., but get the feeling that’s for toning rather than muscle building

It would be great, even yoga would, your body would be your weight so to speak though you might find getting from one position to another difficult. My personal trainers face the first time I told him I couldnt do a crunch because my fat stomach was in the way was a picture and 7 years later we still laugh about it because it hadn’t really crossed his mind. You could even do a kind of chair yoga or a sitting down resistance bands workout. But honestly, whatever you decide to do will be great.

Yeah i think body weight may be the way forward because i just cannot stand sitting in the gym with weights 🤣

If there's one thing i hate more than weight training, it is training at home, I've never been able to commit to it. Frankly, I'd rather walk the dog in the rain!!

Have you got a climbing wall near you? You get strength training combined with HIITS style work outs if you do routes rather than bouldering (which is a better option anyway until you lose more weight), and it is all visual/spatial problem solving and body position, so your thinking about that rather than the focusing on the workout.

Indoor climbing has become more and more mainstream over recent years, and there are a lot more overweight people giving it a go. However, higher level climbing is still dominated by skinny people, just to warn you (although this is probably more of a mental block for me than you as i used to be a skinny climber before developing pituitary problems, and it's still a lot of the same people there, so I'm extremely self conscious).

And the advantage of being overweight is that you get more of a workout on the easier routes as you are carrying more weight up it. Win win

Weepixie · 14/08/2025 11:27

@LifeOfAShowGirl that sounds good!

But honestly, excercise really has moved on from sitting in the gym on weight machines. Two of my favourite exercises are a farmers lift carrying heavy kettlebells, I pretend I’m carrying heavy suitcases up a train platform in order to get onto my next train. Then there’s a (kind of) game of netball where I have to hit a target high up on the wall with a heavy medicine ball. Then there’s what I call moving my grans sideboard because I have to push this bloody big contraption from on side of the gym to the other and it reminds me of moving my grannies sideboard for her decades ago. And of course there is a traditional element to it but it’s not a big part of it. Honestly, it’s great fun.

KnewYearKnewMe · 14/08/2025 11:38

@Mirabai - I’ve been on Mounjaro for about 10 months and lost 4.5 stones - one more to go.

im 55 and have been overweight, obese or dieting since I was very young child.

Your question is a common one, but is rooted in diet and lifestyle mentality.

Obesity is now recognised as a disease, which chronically very overweight people have. I’m educated and successful in all other aspects of life, yet could never sustain a healthy weight for long without fixating on it.

Mounjaro regulates insulin, blood sugar and brain impulses that affect people with obesity. It’s not a simple as building up healthy habits - without the treatment, many people would physiologically revert to the way their body operates without it.

I expect to be on Mounjaro or some form of GLP-1 for the very long term, if not life, which many medics are also expecting too.

Ps - OP - massive well done to - MJ is life changing isn’t it 🥇👏🥇👏🥇👏

Genuine interest in finding out.

You say you are eating much more healthily, exercising regularly including the gym, making good choices about food…all great.

Is this why you are losing weight rather than the medication? These are all the right things to do.
Would this result in good habits formed over time which continue without medication?

Do you think the cost is an incentive to the good habits ( I'm paying out loads id better exercise) and why do you not make these good choices without the medication?

I suppose I'm thinking is there a placebo effect or motivator in just being on this medication?

I’m on MJ too, but only two stones out of six down. The eating better is absolutely why I am losing weight. The drug just keeps me on track, silences a I bit of the “food noise”/greed. I think I had one week where a dose of the injection didn’t administer properly, but I can’t recall which week, yet I still lost weight consistently, so possibly there is a placebo effect too. I stopped smoking by hypnosis 20 years ago, and I know I did the hard work myself, but I still felt “something else was helping”. I feel the same about the injections.

Personally I really hope to come off the drugs once I get to goal. Yes my weight may fluctuate a bit but I hope I can catch it and manage it. For me the thought of losing 6 +stones was overwhelming and I had a lot of other things going on, so the MJ helped. I don’t believe I am programmed differently to thin people. I know why I get fat. I do think the drug’s risks are outweighed by the risks of obesity, but I hopefully won’t be obese in the near future so I don’t want to continue with the drug. But I’m not knocking others that choose to do so.
As for finances, I’m on a very low income, but don’t pay for tv subscriptions or car loans etc that lots of other people have. I definitely don’t save money on food - healthy foods are t cheap!

No one is denying that, but there is no reason why you can't maintain a healthy weight once you've got there with sensible eating and exercise....

If people that take mounjaro (like me) could maintain healthy weights through sensible eating and exercise without mounjaro…they wouldn’t be taking in the first place!

@LifeOfAShowGirl ,
I too feel my life is changed because of Mounjaro. I’m post menopause though so it’s taken me nearly 10 months to lose just over 4 stone and I’m 4Lb from my goal. I don’t think I will be able to maintain my weight loss without the medication because I always ate very healthily and exercised but I’m certain I had underlying insulin resistance which the drug is designed to address. The news yesterday is a blow, the price increase looks like it will be immense. 😔
Anyway I did actually have a question for you which was what was the highest dose you took and at what dose are you maintaining but as as you’re still on your journey I’ll have to wait for the answer. Good luck!

DarkForces · 15/08/2025 08:32

@LifeOfAShowGirl I'm so glad. It's going to be out of reach for so many more people now and I honestly think these drugs are going to save millions of people from dying early and suffering from years of preventable diseases. I am nearly at goal weight and am on 7.5 so I'm hoping my provider will let me order every other month so I can continue on it. Gutted as I was looking forward to a bit more money spare. Would you consider something like that once you're at goal weight?
