yes I agree. I think my eldest has become self sufficient. He is 16 and not hugely communicative right now about emotions

Well, that sounds healthy.

LadyLapsang · 07/08/2025 23:27

Among your DH’s colleagues, what percentage send their children to boarding school and what percentage have a UK based economically active spouse and chose day schools? Does your DH have a profession, such as medicine, that would enable him to send three children to boarding school if he had to pay the fees out of earned income when he leaves, or do the fees represent such a large percentage of his income that you are essentially locked in.

He works in the military

Great to know our tax money is affording you this “prestigious” lifestyle .

Fine with me, as long as you don't think you and your family are better or more important than everyone else.

You aren't; you are just more privileged and fortunate.

I don't think I am better than anyone else. And neither do my kids who are humble , kind boys

Why don’t you want your children living at home?

Presumably both parents work long hours.

Trixibell1234 · 07/08/2025 23:29

My husband’s cousins were in a military family and went to boarding school. They describe the lasting effects as feeling they always have to be on their best behaviour at home, and have struggled to have a romantic relationship as an adult as their default is to act independently. Neither has a family now. It’s only really hitting home as adults though.

Apologies if it’s already been asked and I’ve missed it…
What are the fees @tummyduck?
How much does it cost per term/year to send DC? Inclusive of everything.

@tummyduck have any of the remarks in this thread made you question if you’ve made the right choice for your sons, and prioritised the right things for their development and wellbeing?

Not really no. It is all very much standard opinions which we boarding school parents are familiar with

OP posts:
cherish123 · 07/08/2025 23:31

I didn't board myself but went to a school that had borders. Most children were quite happy. Most of their parents worked abroad.

I am always fascinated about how other people do life. I actually don't seek to gain anything from this thread. I am a pretty open book and welcome any questions

What type of education are they given in regard to seeing the world from women’s point of view?

My DD recently encountered a boy from an elite, private, all boys school who thought rape jokes were funny. He was a nice boy too, which is why I was astounded that he hadn’t thought through what was clearly an acceptable joke in his world. All boys world.

Hate to say it but those jokes are alive and well across the board sadly …

@RedRock41 there is a difference between private daybschools and boarding schools though. I do not doubt private day schools have more drugs than some state schools. boarding is different though. There is less general access to drugs in an institution

OP respectfully, what evidence are you basing the assertion that boarders were not included in the cited samples? Remain happy to be corrected, but just mean more robust evidence than just opinion of day vs boarder impacts be helpful as can be the case often even when evidence is presented contrary to someone’s entrenched or unsubstantiated views that they might double down and just ignore it.

Not saying that applies in this case but just saying from a lay person’s perspective struggling with the logic that private day pupils somehow are able to have more unprotected sex, buy and get off their 🌲 on more drink/drugs - even though they go home every night but those who sleepover, are if I understand your view correctly much less likely to?

On the plus side (and tongue in cheek) whatever the answer, would expect the quality of said drink/drugs would at least be greatly superior… no glens vodka or shared dibs on a single sad spliff so every ⛅️…

@MasterBeth probably bang on standard for a 16 year old bot

I bring up my own children. Teachers are not parents

No you don’t, they are brought up by staff. You are just a part time parent.

You haven’t brought them up, physical touch, just being there is so so important and you and your husband are not there for them.

You don’t give them hugs or cuddles everyday, you don’t sit around having dinner together or watching TV or playing games. You don’t randomly get a sloppy kiss from them or a grunt when they’re moody. You haven’t provided them with a loving home they can relax and have fun everyday in.

I think with all the safeguarding now in place (due to the hideous history) I think it a really safe place for a child to be in. I would probably say safer than your children wandering around town

Is the school on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors?

Possibly bang on standard for military families with boys at elite private boarding schools. Do you have a lot of experience of 16 year-olds in more conventional family settings?
