Since there have been a few hair related threads lately I thought people might have questions.

Why is there no women's hairdresser where you can get a quick cheap trim when barbers are so very cheap. Even women with very short hair have to pay a fortune for the same cut ( woman £40 average, man £10 average)/

JollyAndBright · 16/04/2019 15:17

Hahaha. Thanks LorelaiRoryEmily

I ‘wash’ my hair with rye flour once a week.
I have very long hair and I find it suits my hair well.

I never tell any hairdressers though. 😂

memaymamo · 16/04/2019 15:18

Thanks for this AMA!

I am a bit scared of hairdressers because I feel intimidated by how stylish and groomed they are compared to me, so I have not been able to have a decent conversation about how to look after my hair. I've got really frustrating frizz that only grows at the front of my head, to about the first inch past my hairline. That front hair sticks straight up like fairy floss and makes me look like a mad woman, but I've never found a good product to keep it under control. The rest of my hair is quite nice, thick and wavy and well-behaved, but it's just the front that I despise and try to keep in place with bobby pins etc. If I blow dry it, it goes a bit straighter but I'm sure it damages the already dry frizzy hair if I blow dry it all the time.

Any advice?

LashesZ · 16/04/2019 15:26

@LorelaiRoryEmily please ignore the state of my hair, I'm having a lazy day! also the photo of my desired hair colour, I had to trawl back to my uni days Grin my hair colour now is the 1st pic - it feels cooler and purpley compared to the lighter pic? I'm after the more ginger, natural colour I once had

@Glitterpixie that is awful. And untrue. There’s no need to wash your hair before you come in. That’s my job. As I said above it’s the people who obviously do t ever bother to wash their hair that I’m bothered by. It’s absolutely fine to not have washed for a few days. A lot of my regulars come in once a week and don’t wash theirs in between and that’s perfectly fine so do t worry. Whoever wrote that is horrible.

@mammajay I have a few clients who come in for a dry cut. I charge them €15.

@memaymamo dont be intimidated! I’m not that groomed or stylish🤣🤣 I do try to have my hair done and a little makeup on but god I’m certainly no style queen!! I would say you’re probably better to try and keep that front part blow dried to make it look better? It’s hard to say without seeing it, but there’s a Schwarzkopf bc shampoo cakes smooth perfect. It’s professional so a salon or supplier would have it. I find it brilliant for hard to manage frizzy hair..

8-77 Schwarzkopf igora royal. 6% on roots and 3% on the ends. If you’d like it as coppery but slightly deeper(would last better) then 7-77. If you have grey and she says it won’t cover it then 6-70 igora absolutes.

I'd like to remove the current hair dye I have as it's far too dark, it was a dye out a box that I did by myself. Is there a way to get dark brown dye out easily at home or is it a hairdresser job?

startalovetrain · 16/04/2019 15:46

Are you disgusted by people who have sebaceous cysts on their scalp? Do you come across any?

I haven't been to the hairdresser in years as I have two pea sized lumps on my head and it's so embarrassing :(

KooMoo · 16/04/2019 15:55

LorelaiRoryEmily 2nd question.

How would you treat bleach damaged hair? What use at home products do you recommend to try to counteract the brittleness?

Today I’ve used an intensive mask by SP. Unless I need to go out I’m also not blow drying.

Thanks in advance :)

LorelaiRoryEmily · 16/04/2019 15:58

@MaHeidsGouping you’d be better off with a hairdresser. It’s not as simple as removing colour. You’ll end up with an orange colour and it will need to be re coloured to your desired shade.

@startalovetrain loads of people have lumps or warts or some sort of something on their heads. Doesn’t bother me a bit. Honestly. Go to the hairdresser. We aren’t bothered by things like that. It’s part of the job. It’s just a head and they are just two little lumps. No big deal at all!

LorelaiRoryEmily · 16/04/2019 16:03

@KooMoo no problem! I’m a big fan of the Schwarzkopf Bc range. Their repair treatment is fab. Even better used with the shampoo and conditioner.

But the big thing that no one tells you is, shampoo your hair, squeeze out the excess moisture with a towel, apply the treatment and comb through, wrap in a towel and leave for 15/20 minutes or as long as you want, rinse it, towel dry again and then apply your conditioner. Rinse and do whatever you do with it.
You should always condition after a treatment. You’ll feel the benefit of the treatment much more

Why do my copper highlights fade so quickly to a caramel blonde colour?

LorelaiRoryEmily · 16/04/2019 16:10

@Neegans wife, do you have blonde hilites too? If you do it’s possibly because the copper is being applied over blonde. If not is your hair in good condition? If it’s not colour will fade faster. How often do you wash it? Do you use a good shampoo?

Coppers and reds are fuckers for fading. A slightly deeper copper might hold better

I have scalp psoriasis, any tips? It's like I have permanent dandruff that shows. One of the reasons I intentionally socially isolate.

The missus asks - she's not had a chop for ages, so no hairstyle. She's having a cut tomorrow and terrified. Any advice on a style etc?

Thank you x 2! :)

NeegansWife · 16/04/2019 16:25

I know its blonde after the foils have been taken out at the basin (I asked when my hair was being washed because I was nowhere near a mirror and wondered what it looked like). They then put a toner on it for about 10 minutes which makes it copper. My hair is in ok condition, its quite thick and is frizzy/wavy unless I blow dry it straight. I wash it every 3 days usually with Pantene keratin smooth shampoo and conditioner to try and help with the frizz.

mistermagpie · 16/04/2019 16:32

Is it ok the get colour when you're pregnant? I never really know. I get balayage so it's not on the roots (roots are my natural colour) if that makes a difference?

LorelaiRoryEmily · 16/04/2019 17:10

@Steeve psoriasis I’d advise if it looks flaky to use something mousturising. I have a client who uses aveeno for hers and finds it great.

For your wife get googling! Google images of hairstyles for 30’s or 40’s, take screenshots and be totally honest with the hairdresser about how much styling she’s able/prepared to do.

OP posts:
LorelaiRoryEmily · 16/04/2019 17:12

@neeganswife there’s your answer! The hilites are blonde and then toned copper. Toners only last a few washes. They're really only a stain. Why can’t they use a copper hilite colour?

OP posts:
LorelaiRoryEmily · 16/04/2019 17:13

@mistermagpie it’s totally safe, don’t worry. I coloured mine throughout my pregnancy and also worked through my pregnancy and I had no problems at all.

Any tips for post menopause, grey hair covered up with home dye, over heat treated with tongs?

No hope is there?

NeegansWife · 16/04/2019 17:18

I will ask next time for sure. Thanks for your advice, much appreciated x

LittleAndOften · 16/04/2019 17:18

I'd really like to have a younger, funkier hairstyle (I'm 40) but struggle to know what to say to the hairdresser. I've spent hours trawling through styles on google and even downloaded apps but I just don't know what suits me and stylists just point me at magazines. The last time I asked a stylist for a restyle I got something like a mullet!

I wish I could have a Nicky Clarke hair makeover like they used to do on This Morning back in the day, where he just took the lead and made them look fabulous. How can I find a new style that suits me?
