Since there have been a few hair related threads lately I thought people might have questions.

Thanks Lorelei!

I have blonde (highlighted) hair, probably more brown naturally, but I have it highlighted regularly. A few months ago I asked my hairdresser if she could put some pink bits in, maybe starting from the bottom and up about 4 inches but NOT the whole head. I ended up with the whole head Blush not sure why they did that but I was too afraid to say! And it also washed out quite a bit after the first wash and then faded quickly from then. Is this normal?

Is it balayage that I need to ask for? I’ve attached a photo of what I’d like (ideally more lilac coloured). I’d love it to stay in for a few weeks at least. What do I need to ask for please?! Can it be done on my hair? My hairdresser said she didn’t want to ruin my hair by putting in too strong a colour like blue or dark purple etc so I’m not really sure what’s best!

Any ideas on what I could do with this would be hugely appreciated.
Thank you

@Scifiscream is your hair naturally straight?
I’d imagine they advise against layers simply because you like to dry naturally and your hair is fine.

Layering fine hair can make it look thin and stringy particularly if it’s long.

Do you have a lot of fine hair? Or is it thin and fine?

If you have a lot of fine hair then layering would be absolutely fine, just a long square layer to give it some shape would be lovely.

If it’s thin and fine then avoid layers.

If it hasn’t been cut in 18 months make an appt! Tell them an 1/2 and inch is all you want off.

If it’s working for you without colour then I’d leave it natural. Yes colouring can make it appear thicker but once you start you’ll be at it forever!

There are products that help it to appear fuller absolutely. Professional ones usually the best but to be honest if you’re not in to Blowdrying then just invest in a volumising shampoo and Conditioner.

Don’t bother with the styling products because most of them work best with blowdrying.

@theperturbedpenguin that pic is probably balayage/hair painting. What I would have done with your request is backcomb(to avoid a line) all the hair and freehand apply the pink to the lower parts of your hair.
Those colors are usually toners and will fade quite fast.

Your hairdresser is probably worried that they’ll have to remove a stronger colour if you decide to go blonde again.

Stronger colours wouldn’t damage your hair going on but if you wanted to remove it then they’d have to bleach which would cause damage

I’ve got a similar going grey question!

My hairline shows grey roots after a week and I’m box dyeing to cover. Got a sensitive scalp too so root cover stuff is a no go.

I’m wondering if I can go grey by stripping/dying. I’m on a merry go round of hair dye and sore scalp and am fed up.

I’m only 35 and have had to cover greys for 8 years already.

What will be required to get to where I want to be??

LorelaiRoryEmily · 16/04/2019 12:58

@justanotherbadhairday
Happy to help, take it above the shoulder. That length is no mans land.
Side fringe, a decent one.
And get rid of that colour!

Go either blonde(balayage) or dark but the current colour is neither here nor there,
Dark would make it look shiny and healthy.

Something on a level 6 with some really fine freehand blonde through it.

That’s what I’d suggest if you came to me

@LorelaiRoryEmily that picture is my hair washed and dried naturally so yes. Straight. Occasionally I do like to straighten it as it looks better (it's also less tuggy when I've straightened, even when I've been outside in the wind!)

I'll keep the colour as it is.

I've been told I've got lots of fine hair - but when I put it in a pony tail, it's a tiny pony tail so I don't think I have that much actually

I'd do the blow drying for special occasions! Just can't be bothered day-to-day.

Hi best tips for flakey scalp pls ?

Justanotherbadhairday · 16/04/2019 13:01

Thank you. I really appreciate it.

LorelaiRoryEmily · 16/04/2019 13:02

@Fontleroy stripping will almost always leave you with an orange base so that will need work to get you to grey.

Have you considered lightening your colour?

Basically to get it to grey you’ll need to get the computer hair stripped, probably bleached to a pretty clean blonde, then toned to grey.
Toners don’t last long so there would be maintenance.

Then it would be a matter of letting your own colour just take over, keeping the previously coloured hair toned and allowing the new growth th stay as it is.

It’s very difficult to do and at 35 I think you’re very young and could find it a little aging.

LorelaiRoryEmily · 16/04/2019 13:04

Oh @scifiscream I can’t see a pic! If your ponytail is thin then no to layers.

OP posts:
LorelaiRoryEmily · 16/04/2019 13:05

@mrssunshinexxx if it’s flaky skin and not dandruff(which is yellow and smells) then a good moisturising shampoo. If you rehydrate the scalp the flaming will stop

Another grey question.

I am very grey and I get my roots dyed brown every four weeks. Why does my hair end up in bands of faded colour and good colour?

So, imagine this: I end up with horizontal stripes of medium brown / dark brown. I then have highlights which makes my hair look like it’s a chess board.

How can I cover up my grey in mid-dark brown and then have caramel highlights without ending up looking patchy?

Thank you.

mrssunshinexxx · 16/04/2019 13:08

Thanks for responding sorry to be a pain any recommendations that I could pick up in Morrisons Grin

Insertwitticismhere · 16/04/2019 13:13

Is it possible to tone bleached hair grey at home? trying to managing the transition to all grey. The last but one time I had my t-section done they toned it a gorgeous grey but can't find a way to replicate at home and am no longer anywhere near that salon!

KooMoo · 16/04/2019 13:16

My favourite AMA thread ever LoreliaRoryEmily !!!

I recently had some highlights put in. Hairdresser used some bleach. I have now very dry hair plus significant breakage on the lighter bits.

Hairdresser says it could be under active thyroid.

I say it’s the bleach.

What’s your opinion please?

Also can you achieve honey blonde/caramel highlights without bleach?

Thank you in advance.

LorelaiRoryEmily · 16/04/2019 13:17

@cafetierecoffee if you have horizontal bands of colour you need a new hairdresser.

Bands of colour appear for a couple of reasons.

1.Overlapping the colour, colour should only be applied to the root and not overlapped onto previously coloured hair.

  1. They are using a different shade, maybe don’t have your colour in and use something slightly different.
  1. The developer is too strong. Most hairdressers use 6%(20 vol) covering grey

I personally only use 3%(10 vol) as the result is more even, true to the shade and lasts better.

So what they need to do is pop in the hilites first, the apply the root colour and after maybe 15 minutes apply the colour to the mig lengths and ends to cover up all the lines and stripes that you shouldn’t have

I have chin length wavy hair and the hairdresser cut it so it goes up slightly at the backbShock

I hate it and wondered about suggestions for styling wavy hair.

Fortunately it grows fast ! Any suggestions?

LorelaiRoryEmily · 16/04/2019 13:18

@mrssunshinexxx I’m in Ireland so brands may be different but L’Oréal elvive is one of the better supermarket brands so if look for a moisturising one In that range!

@insertwitticismhere there is a shampoo that will do it for you. It’s called S6 by echosline there’s a mask too. Professional brand but not too expensive and will last you ages. Just leave it on for ten mins.
You should be able to buy it online

LorelaiRoryEmily · 16/04/2019 13:25

@KooMoo
I’m with you. It’s the bleach. She overlapped it onto previously lightened ends/left it on too long.

Your thyroidHmm she fucked up and she’s trying to make it your responsibility.

You absolutely can achieve blondes and caramels without bleach.

They won’t be as white as bleach, more warm tones

Ask for high lift blonde colours. Be very clear that you don’t want bleach/prelightner/lightening powder/cream bleach.

Tell your hairdresser that you’ve had previous damage from bleach and you know the colour wont be as blonde and you’re happy with that.

And get a new hairdresser!!
