Since there have been a few hair related threads lately I thought people might have questions.

Oh does the colour have to be by the same company or can I use any

chocolover12 · 25/04/2019 23:04

Can you suggest me cool tones? How will I know which tones are cool? Sorry for so many questions

Sunonthepatio · 25/04/2019 23:08

OP your instagram page is a great idea. If you have your name on it, you can market yourself without actually trying to.

Pengrin · 25/04/2019 23:16

Hi OP, I finally found a great hairdresser and have used her for a few years now. I had booked in for a full head of highlights cut and blow but cancelled the day before as my brother passed away.

When cancelling, the owner (not the hairdresser) had a right go at me telling me I’d lost the hairdresser half a day of pay.

It’s months later and I’m still too nervous to call back for an appointment. I wouldn’t bother but for the fact it’s the only decent salon where I live.

How bad is it when clients cancel? Would you rather they didn’t come back?

LorelaiRoryEmily · 25/04/2019 23:31

@Happymisfit there’s nothing in my insurance stipulating age for any services

LorelaiRoryEmily · 25/04/2019 23:32

@chocolover possibly roots only, then emulsify through the ends just before rinsing and nope any brand should be fine!

@Elizabethinhergermangarden first of all get a recommendation for a good hairdresser. Secondly you might not get as cool a result as that depending on what’s in your hair already, particularly if you’ve been home colouring. Be honest about what you’ve put in. That way they’ll know what to do.
Bring the picture! You could try building it up with some fine hilites through mid lengths and ends and see if that gives a cleaner result and then just keep adding to the hilites and keep the roots dark so you can touch them up yourself. Best to be honest and tell them that’s what you’re intending so they can help

Just be warned that every time you apply home colour after having the blonde put in you run the risk of staining it. Particularly when you rinse off the root colour

@chrisprattatemyhomework
Purple shampoo is your friend! Or a toner. Definitely don’t bleach again

@LorelaiRoryEmily Thank you for the reply! When you say 'cool', do you mean 'groovy' or do you mean 'not ginger'? 😂

LorelaiRoryEmily · 25/04/2019 23:41

@chocolover12 I wish I could but I’m not at all familiar with box dye tones. Something that actually says cool maybe? An ash at that level will cause more gold usually...

@Elizabethinhergermangarden 🤣🤣 that made me laugh out loud😂 I mean not ginger🤣🤣🤣

@Pengrin I’m sorry for your loss. How rude of her to name you feel bad and she shouldn’t have mentioned money at all.

Ring and book in, I bet they’ll be delighted to see you back

Re the cancellation today alone I lost €180 in cancelled appts last minute. It can be annoying but they’re my clients, they’ll rebook and life happens. If someone cancels 3 appts short notice I’ll double book them going forward and if they come in they have to wait. If they don’t I’m not losing out.

Go back to them and have your hair done. They won’t hold a grudge. It’s part of this business and I doubt she was docked half a day of pay. No one would work in those conditions. She was just annoyed about the money. She’ll be hoping you come back.

Will an ash not make it go green ? That's what I've read. Thanks for your help

Coconutsandcobbles · 26/04/2019 00:42

Can you tell if someone pulls their own.hair out? I used to frequently pull out lots of my own.hair at roots. Never enough to look bald. Would hairdresser know? Made me embarrassed to get hair done.

Batsypatsy · 26/04/2019 00:43

Great thread!

What do you really think when someone has psoriasis? I feel exposed when the hair dresser is combing through my hair, although logically I know I can't do much about it.

I have long curly hair. How can I keep it curly in the lengths? The top is curly but the ends go straight. I tie it up in a top knot when wet and let it dry naturally, it comes out lovely and curly but the next day the ends go straight.

What's the best shampoo for scalp with psoriasis? The medicated shampoos strip the colour so I use them very rarely, plus I hate the smell.

cockadoodledooooo · 26/04/2019 07:00

@LorelaiRoryEmily thank you. My hair always lightens and has a lot of red pigment so it always seems to end up like this!

Either of these effects is what I'd like but I never get that dark despite asking. What should I be asking for?

@chocolover12 ash won’t make it green, a brown with no warmth applied straight on to blonde hair will turn it green. You have too much warmth in your hair. You need a natural, or something with no warmth to kill it out.

OP posts:
LorelaiRoryEmily · 26/04/2019 07:27

@cockadoodledoooo bring pictures and make sure to tell the hairdresser that you want to be darker. Ask to see a chart and show them what you like..

@coconutsandcobbles hair loss and new growth can be there for multiple reasons. Usually hormonal, I wouldn't even comment on it to a client unless they mentioned it first. Honestly we’re not judging. Go and have your hair done and enjoy!

LorelaiRoryEmily · 26/04/2019 07:33

@Batsypatsy google the curly girl method! I have clients who swear by it.

Re the psoriasis I think nothing more than god help her, that’s hard to deal with. I would just use a good moisturising shampoo, a professional one. Bonus if you find one that’s sulphate free.

Thank you for the very interesting thread, Lorelai!

What's your opinion on keratin treatments for fine hair? Will it look lank / flat / greasy? And how compatible are keratin treatments with bleached and coloured hair?
I have fine hair (but lots of it), naturally a mousy dark blonde colour with pearly blonde balayage lengths (level 8-9) and ends (level 10). Hair responds really well to keratin heavy products, but gets quite frizzy if it's humid or I let it air dry. I already use Olaplex (the pro version) regularly. I asked my hairdresser about keratin treatments but she didn't seem to think it was a good idea. Would love to hear your opinion!

And another question: I noticed that you seem hesitant to recommend professional dyes / toners rather than box dyes for home use when then latter seem to yield pretty unpredictable results / cause more damage. Not trying to criticise you, just wondering what the reason for that is?
Personally, I use Wella Illumina + Colour Touch Emulsion 1.9% (1:2) as a toner (8/69 and 10/69 sort of melting into each other for a cool / pearly blonde) on pre-lightened hair which works pretty well and seems quite straightforward to me. Are there any risks I'm not aware of? Somehow I doubt that just a purple shampoo would sort out the brassiness in cases like ChrisPratt's picture, but of course I may be completely wrong.

TIA! And an enthusiastic thumbs up for the Instagram idea! Could be really helpful and great publicity at the same time. I also generally like hairdressers who put examples of their work on Instagram (ideally not just models but real clients) so I can get a better idea of their style and taste.

Here is the picture. Do
You still think a cool
Brown tone of colour is what I'm safe doing to erase this orangey copper colour?
