Since there have been a few hair related threads lately I thought people might have questions.

@Welshmum3 I’ve honestly never heard of that. There is no law. Any friends who could recommend another hairdresser?

OP, what a lovely thread! I have a question too. I’ve had the same haircut (shoulder lenght) and colour (brown) for ages. I’ve recently lost

cockadoodledooooo · 25/04/2019 19:52

Hi op. Please critique my hair.

I'm 50, my hair seems to be thinning and the colour drives me mad. I've been to four different hairdressers in the last year and none have done the colour how I want. Ideally I'd like to go dark with some chunky blonde highlights.

My hair has been washed and blow dried and had the straighteners pulled through it today. I often tie it up and it's very frizzy and got quite a wave in it if let to dry naturally.

Help me feel young again Wink

Oh crap. Pressed post to soon. I’ve lost some weight and feel I want to change my hairstyle. I have NO idea what would suit me though. My hairdresser expects some suggestions from me. I have no idea but I would be willing to change the style completely. My only stipulation is that styling can’t take more than 20 minutes in the morning. Is it ok for a customer not to know what they want? Or do you find it extremely annoying?

chocolover12 · 25/04/2019 20:10

I've attached a pic here. I dyed it darker again today but it's almost still the same. How do I get this orange tone out?

chocolover12 · 25/04/2019 20:11

It's actually worse than it looks in the pic

LorelaiRoryEmily · 25/04/2019 20:33

@Floralmoral well done! I wish I could motivate myself to lose some🙈 I don’t find it annoying at all when client doesn’t know what they want. It’s my job to guide them towards something that would suit them, both in appearance and lifestyle.

What I do love though is if clients have photos or screenshots or hairstyles and colours that they love so I have a visual of what appeals to them and it’s much easier to figure out what they can’t explain to me!

I always ask what do you love about your hair and what do you hate about it. The answers provide great insight

@cockadoodledoooo hi! Ok your colour looks a bit in no mans land in that pic, it looks to me like you had the roots done last time but no hilites and the hilites are slightly grown out.

All over darker with blonde hilites would be much better but please don’t ask for chunky hilites. Pretty please!! Fine hilites look much better and what you really want from colour is softness. Not the harsh lines of chunky hilites. So a base of a 6 with some added warmth and some fine blonde hilites is what I would suggest for you.

@chocolover12 get out from under that light🤣🤣 could you take a pic outside in daylight? Before it gets dark! That colour doesn’t look too bad but the light over you is very distorting to the colour so outside will be better. (And for the love of god step away from the box dye til we get you sorted!!🤣🤣)

chocolover12 · 25/04/2019 20:43

🤦‍♀️willl try and get a pic outside just doing the bedtime routine with the little ones.

LorelaiRoryEmily · 25/04/2019 20:43

@chocolover no panic!

I have a question now! I’m looking through all these questions and half thinking of setting up an instagram page about all things hair. Somewhere people can do what you’ve all been doing here. Totally anonymous and I might not bother... but should I?!!

OP posts:
chocolover12 · 25/04/2019 20:53

Ah it's gone dark now so can't get a pic outside until tomorrow. But generally speaking how can I get the orangey tones out ?
And Instagram page is a great idea

yummyscummymummy01 · 25/04/2019 20:57

Hello please help!

I have a slightly bald patch on the front of my head from playing with my hair. I don't play with my hair anymore but it just hasn't grown back Sad

Any tips for hiding it and treating it?

Bacawill · 25/04/2019 21:08

Hi,

I have long-ish hair at the moment that used to be lovely and thick but when I was ill last year lots started to break off and I have have lots of little bits of hair that stick up on my parting. Is there anything I can do to flatten them out without losing volume?

Also, what cut would you recommend to balance out a very round face (with a double chin!)

LorelaiRoryEmily · 25/04/2019 22:14

@chocolover12 basically the problem is first of all if you were colouring virgin hair you should apply to mid lengths and ends first and roots last. The roots will develop too much and too quickly if they go in first because that’s where the heat is.

Secondly going from black to mid brown using a blonde colour would go orange even if I did it(which obviously I wouldn’t) because the darker you are the more red/orange tone there’ll be in your hair so you’d have been safer just picking a lighter brown if you want to do it yourself

Lightening any colour is a tricky process and is always better done professionally. There’s so much to colouring hair, it really is an art. The best thing to try now is a cool tone is a shade similar to what it is currently, no number lower than a 5 or 6 for depth. It’ll grab enough anyway and the coolest tone you can get. Don’t leave it on too long. Hopefully that will help you😊

Oh and for your grey, resistant coverage colour or you can pre soften. That means apply the colour neat to the grey, no developer mixed in. Leave it 10 minutes, mix colour as normal and apply over it. Should do the trick!

@yummyscummymummy01 depending on where it is would a fringe be an option? It’s hard to say without seeing it, but it will probably grow back in time, it’s very hard I know, even a little backcombing around it might help to disguise it, again depending on where exactly it is. I hope it grows back soon.

OP posts:
LorelaiRoryEmily · 25/04/2019 22:23

@Bacawill I hope you’re better now. So a teeny bit of hairspray on your hand and just pat down the sticky up hairs or spray lightly over them and gently flatten with your hand.

Re the style, I’d always suggest keeping length around the front, a collar bone length A-line bob or even something below the shoulder with some very simple long layers but again keeping some length at the front for balance

OP posts:
LorelaiRoryEmily · 25/04/2019 22:24

Oh and if your hair is below shoulder length some very soft face framing layers can be fab, again just don’t go too short with them

I love Kate Beckinsale's hair in this photo - what would I need to say to get something similar? Last time I tried I ended up a kind of golden ginger bouffant, a little bit country. It looked great, actually, but wasn't what I was asking for. My hair is not and never will be as long as KB's but is top-of-the-boob, v thick, wavy and in reasonable condition

My hair's dark-ish brown and I've been box dyeing it to cover greys in my parting and around my hairline (L'Oréal Excellence medium golden brown, which is a nice colour at first but fades dreadfully).

My worry is that the greys appear and I notice the roots after about three weeks. There's no way I can afford salon colour that often. Is there a way I can get a colour done that will then match a box dye to do the roots in between times?

Thanks so much. I love this thread - just read the whole thing!

ChrisPrattAteMyHomework · 25/04/2019 22:54

Can you tell me how to fix the yellow and brassyness in my hair please?

Do I need to rebleach it again? Bleach bath?

Toner?

sobs

Yes that makes sense and it's the roots that are a lot lighter. If I go for a cooler shade now Do I apply only to roots or all over ? I'll send a pic tomorrow
