I find it contradictory that you don’t want your children learning about sex or going away to uni because of the prospect of sex, yet you are happy for them to get married at a very young age (16, whilst legal, is exceptionally young).

SPOFS · 10/07/2018 17:46

Yes, I appreciate that it is your culture and your children's heritage. But don't you want your daughter to travel? Be independent? Have lots of different friends? She may decide that she doesn't want to live the traveler life, how would that make you feel?

ScreamingValenta · 10/07/2018 17:46

It looks really pretty with the jewelled bodice.

sorry this is going off something you said on the first page and I've not yet read the rest: you say you don't let your girls know much about sex but what about what's on movies, tv,social media, do you have to restrict what they're allowed to watch?
And what about clothing? is that restrictive.

I am from a community who bring children up a similar way by the way so I'm just curious.

haverhill · 10/07/2018 17:48

Why do you think the life expectancy for travellers is so much lower than the general population?

TakeABreak2 · 10/07/2018 17:48

ohmeohmy i would be vey upset if my daugher got married at 16 and if she did i would tell her to wait before she fell pregant till she was a bit older

I have met quite a few travellers over the years and can say that most one-on-one are lovely people . Kind and quite humble really. The children are polite and helpful towards their siblings .
However when they are in a big group they seem to go crazy . Shouting and screaming and generally behaving aggressively toward anyone who gets in their way. Disagree with one traveller and you have a war with them all.

Do you think- and I know you can only speak for your own family - is this a deliberate act to stave off any aggression towards them before it starts?

TakeABreak2 · 10/07/2018 17:51

Why are levels of domestic violence so high and why won’t you allow girls to learn how to read and write or get any education at all?

ElspethFlashman · 10/07/2018 17:56

i would be vey upset if my daugher got married at 16 and if she did i would tell her to wait before she fell pregant till she was a bit older

Why would u be upset if you married at 16? What's the problem with 16 all of a sudden?

And how on earth can you put off getting pregnant without contraception? You'd tell your newlywed daughter to refuse sex?

Orlandointhewilderness · 10/07/2018 17:58

Could you perhaps ask your friends to stop and think next time they steal a battery off an electric fence that MAYBE, just maybe that fence is the only thing between 3 horses and a main road, and perhaps the owner is a single mother who actually can't afford to replace a battery every time it gets stolen, especially if it at the start if the week before payday?!

haverhill · 10/07/2018 17:59

It’s well documented that travellers tend to die young, suffer far more infant and maternal deaths and ill-health in general. Google it. Do you have any idea why this might be?

TakeABreak2 · 10/07/2018 17:59

ScreamingValenta · 10/07/2018 18:00

Sorry, me again Grin.

Would you be happy for one of your children to marry a non-traveller, if they shared your religious faith and moral values?

TakeABreak2 · 10/07/2018 18:00

the same reason my mother told me not to get married so young i was still childish! i learned from my mistakes and id ask my daughter when she was getting married about contraception

Zambia perhaps the travelling community need to stop and think about the image they portray!? In many cases it is people's experiences unfortunately. Op might well be from a perfectly lovely law abiding community but it sure as hell isn't my experience of travellers.
