I have worked with a great deal of traveller women. Never met one I didn’t like. Absolutely lovely and spotless. I also never met one who tutored their children so I’m glad that’s what you plan to do !

Youmeandacuppa39 · 10/07/2018 18:03

Fellow traveller here

I’ve been thinking of doing an AMA on this but you beat me to it.

Rainbowtrees · 10/07/2018 18:04

Who pays for the private tutor, parents or local authority?

Brendatheblender · 10/07/2018 18:05

Thanks for posting this OP it’s really insightful.

There’s a camp near my PILs house and they have had a lot of stuff stolen (land rovers, transit vans and work machinery) by travellers and have been threatened in the local pub. So our experience hasn’t been good, how do you feel about things like this happening with regards to non travellers views on travellers? It must be frustrating for all of you that are stay on the right side of the law.

chickedychicked · 10/07/2018 18:07

thanks for answering.
I was brought up to do the same, switch over if there's a kissing or sex scene but a lot of times youd end up missing half the movie Grin.

Do you not think the girls dressing a lot older and showing a lot of skin means they'd get more attention from the opposite sex when out?

TakeABreak2 · 10/07/2018 18:09

It would drive me insane if I was in your position but there are good eggs and bad eggs in all walks of life.

Sorry if this has been answered up thread (I’ve been skimming over during bath time) how old were you when you had your DCs? Also, what’s the age gap? I also have and 2 and 3 year old, it’s hard work! Wink

Hi Takeabreak

I taught two amazing traveller girls in secondary - their mum made sure they got an education - and they were highly able students but they only stayed about 6 months before the family moved on. They were both really sad that they couldn’t settle for the duration of term time in one place until they finished school although they loved being travellers and were proud of their community. The moving on was costing them so much in terms of their schooling even though they were put in schools wherever they went.

I did feel sorry for them about the education bit. Do you think the culture will change with regards to that as time goes on? These girls always behaved modestly in that they kept their conversation with boys to friends only. And spoke beautifully, would never swear. So they weren’t breaking any home rules.

kikisparks · 10/07/2018 18:22

Very interesting. I have never met a traveller so am pretty ignorant in this area. What would happen to someone who came out as gay or lesbian in the travelling community?

TakeABreak2 · 10/07/2018 18:24

i was 17 with dd and 19 with ds theres 18mo between them

OP posts:
TakeABreak2 · 10/07/2018 18:25

kikisparks it has happened years ago everyone would disown them a few months ago 2 men did and they got congratulated

OP posts:
TakeABreak2 · 10/07/2018 18:27

also to everyone with the negative impact imagine this - meeting a traveller without even knowing it Shock imagine them putting on an accent to where they live and not even telling you in there first words that they are a traveller ShockHmm i know i have done this hundreds of times and nearly everyone i know Wink

OP posts:
zen1 · 10/07/2018 18:28

What are your aspirations for your own children OP?

kikisparks · 10/07/2018 18:28

Oh that’s good to know that views have moved on. As I say I’m ignorant and imagined violence/ being cast out/ being repressed.

TakeABreak2 · 10/07/2018 18:29

i hope they always do what they truly want and do what makes them happy Smile dont take shit of no one especially a man and hope to learn them to say no and stick to it

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 10/07/2018 18:30

just the way it is

Do you ever reflect on the culture in which you live and in which you are bringing up your children or do you simply unquestioningly accept everything?

I know that I looked at my upbringing and thought about what I wanted to pass on to my child, what I wanted to do the same, what I wanted to change. DH and I have decided what values we hope to instil in him, but we also recognise that as an adult he will be an autonomous individual who can make his own decisions without reference to us.

Is it similar for you?

Dragongirl10 · 10/07/2018 18:31

Do you ever park up in farmers fields?

TakeABreak2 · 10/07/2018 18:33

theonlylivingboy
i will be bringing my children up in travellers ways if when they are adults i can only hope they choose to follow i dont know what id do if they never i doubt they wont but if they never that would down to them

OP posts:
TakeABreak2 · 10/07/2018 18:34

dragongirl
never famers fields they go pellet guns lol
no jokes a side i accept some still go in carparks but majority use the transit camps its less hastle you dont get moved on

OP posts:
Dragongirl10 · 10/07/2018 18:38

Do you ever feel guilty about the cost of resources to move you on repeatedly? The court order, the police, the clean up?

Travellers have just been evicted from our local park 2 weeks ago in the South East, the gate was broken, the kids playground damaged, the trampoline taken, then a 24 hour clean up to remove litter etc.

Do you ever consider this?

Zampa · 10/07/2018 18:39

Perhaps the travelling community need to stop and think about the image they portray!?

Orlando Do you also blame all Muslims for 9/11?

noeffingidea · 10/07/2018 18:40

Takeabreak Hi.
Are interracial relationships/marriages accepted within the travelling community (specifically with a black or Asian partner).
Also, are there many people who choose to remain single and childfree within your community?
