Due to living in a small island I'm frequently bored. Hence the thread. Grin

@Taytotots I've visited Grand Falls a couple of times, and driven down Route 2 then crossed back over into the US at Houlton. What bits of New Brunswick are worth visiting? We are up there occasionally for various reasons (dropping DD at school, driving up there to visit Lubec/Eastport).

I vaguely intend to visit Nova Scotia too - you can take a ferry from Portland ME.

@halfwitpicker I've been on Mumsnet for about 15 years I think. Yes that was me!! I posted in the pregnancy threads a lot. I had terrible hg and real temper issues when pregnant.

Dh woke me up from a nap chainsawing once so I threw his iPad in a puddle! BlushConfused

I've never been to Canada. I really want to soon though. I really want to go to Newfoundland but suspect that's because I love the Shipping News (the book) so much. Also really want to go to Montreal in the next couple of months!

We do the storing food away thing. And you're right about the excitement of summer foods!

Also, being at the end of the produce line in the states, it's so hard to get decent out of season food. It's what I miss most about the UK! Being able to pop in to a big shop and the variety of food!

I went to Montauk when we were on a long boat trip last year. It was super posh. Grin

We really should do an East coast meet up.

The summer visitors can be annoying but they're the bread and butter for this area. We have all of our fantastic places to eat, nice quirky shops and most importantly jobs only because of tourism.

Although tell me that when you're taking 8 hours to do a 2 hour drive up to Maine on a Friday and I'll say differently Grin If I need to get anywhere quickly or in a short time in the summer I just fly now, it's actually not that expensive!

When a was pregnant and in a foul mood with Dh he got a MacDonalds (I'd been craving fillet of fish Blush) flown in to say sorry. Grin

I was the same way. DH has either forgiven me or forgotten now that the kids are teenagers.

Montauk is quite a boat trip from where you are. My in-laws had a summer place on Block Island, quite near there. Even back in the '80's you couldn't get a house in Montauk for less than $3-4 million. His parents eventually sold it, in large part because the traffic getting out there was such a nightmare. As bad as Maine summer traffic is, Long Island's is worse.

I hope you're having a lovely 4th!

halfwitpicker · 04/07/2018 14:50

OMG stimmy it was you! I was pregnant too and your posts were great, lots of moaning etc haha. I remember you mentioning 'the island' and having temper issues.

You need to come to Montreal, we can have the reunion at my place!

Stimmyplip · 04/07/2018 14:52

My Dh hasn't forgotten. Grin

Yes we went back and forth to Newport a few times for dh's work then took it all the way to Annapolis! That was a fun trip. Well, apart from the fact that I'd broken my foot and was totally non weight bearing. Getting up dock and ramps (especially with Maine's crazy low tides) was sometimes terrifying and always challenging!

We had lunch at some crazy place in Orient Point on Long Island.

Going through Long Island Sound in rough weather in a boat that wasn't suited was one of the worst memories of my life though lol. It was shockingly awful!

All I did was moan! Bloody wish I hadn't now after a bunch of miscarriages and the realisation that ds will be our only child.

A Montreal meet up would be so so amazing!

Happy 4th to everyone too! We're meant to be going to the island parade (usually 4 cars and a couple of fire trucks) then fireworks in nearby mainland town but I've got the most ridiculous period and am blowing through two super tampons and a maternity pad every hour so feel like I should stay at home. Dh grew up on long lsland sound and had a Boston Whaler he took fishing and on teenage adventures he won't discuss now for some reason. I don't know how I'd feel about DS going out alone in a boat like that now but these are different times.

The New England 4th of July parade is such a fine tradition. We're going up to my old hometown for their parade. They do marching bands, firetrucks, open cars with local politicians, etc. and everyone throws hard candy to the kids.

Sorry you're having a rough day of it. Flowers

MissConductUS · 04/07/2018 22:23

Our parade was cancelled due to severe thunder storms in the area. 😣

How are you holding up @stimmyplip ?

Semster · 04/07/2018 23:06

It's 92F here - instead of going to the parade we went to an air-conditioned bowling alley. It was wonderful!

pusspuss9 · 04/07/2018 23:33

Peak's Island??

Dowser · 04/07/2018 23:53

Thought you might have lived in the Bahamas or off the west coast of Florida 👍

crispinquent · 05/07/2018 00:03

You r one lucky gal w those views

Stimmyplip · 05/07/2018 02:44

We went to the parade. It was so stupidly hot. So we decided to go to the mainland and here it was hotter. It must have been way over 100. Sad

But then saw 5 different fireworks displays!

Sorry your parade got cancelled!

Semster depends what you like but lots to see in New Brunswick. I guess Hopewell Rocks near Fundy national park for the tides. St Andrews is a nice small seaside town. We've only been here two years so still exploring.
stimmyplip I was in Montreal this spring and really liked it. Felt like being back in France. Lots of nice food!

MissConductUS · 05/07/2018 13:26

Stimmyplip I'm glad you made it out to the parade and fireworks. It was stupidly hot here too until the thunderstorms came through. They were really something. We had a long detour going home because a tree had come down blocking our usual way home.

NewfieSummer · 05/07/2018 13:54

I really want to go to Newfoundland but suspect that's because I love the Shipping News (the book) so much.

Quick NC. Hi OP, this is exactly what I did 15yrs ago. Loved the book! So planned a road trip with DD(7) for 10 days. It was gorgeous. We booked a few cabins on route but mainly just hedged our bets on the way back to St Johns. Me and DD both wrote a journal every night, it's still really funny reading them back.

We were asked quite a lot why we had come all the way over from the UK (NWest). My answer every time, because I read the Shipping News. Some places were really funny/quaint, lots of curtains twitching when we were looking around.

It really is a beautiful place and would go back in a heartbeat.

nervousnails · 05/07/2018 21:48

Oh OP it sounds lovely, your island. Do you have hotels on your island? Also, what about trades like a handyman, plumber etc? Is it mostly DIY or do you have people who are in the trade?
