It’s hard enough finding a pair of jeans which are flattering, comfortable and make you feel fabulous when you’re not pregnant so adding an ever-expanding baby bump to the mix can make the task seem nigh on impossible.

You can live in maternity dresses and leggings, of course, but nothing’s quite so useful and go-with-everything as a great pair of jeans. Best maternity jeans overall

LOVALL Straight Leg Maternity Jeans

What we like
  • Multiple leg lengths available ensuring a good fit for all heights

  • Inclusive size range (6 - 28)

  • Straight leg design offers a classic look without appearing too maternity-wear-like

  • Cotton-rich stretch denim delivers softness with flexibility for unrestricted movement

  • Stretchy over-bump band provides maximum comfort and room to grow

What we don't like
  • Limited stretch - the denim is just 1% elastane which means they might not be as accommodating as stretchier jeans

Price on writing: £40 | Sizes: 6 - 26, Petite, Regular, Tall| Colours: Black, mid blue, dark blue | Waistband: Over bump

Our verdict

Mumsnetters love LOVALL (previously known as Love Leggings) for their maternity leggings, so it's no wonder that the brand has also come a cropper with their maternity jeans. Striking a balance between comfort, practicality and style, these straight maternity jeans offer a clean, classic look without compromising on quality.

As well as the soft, over-bump stretch panel, what makes these maternity jeans stand out is their size inclusivity - ranging from 6 to 26 in petite, regular and tall - a huge win for those who struggle to find jeans that fit. At £40 a pair they're not the cheapest, but we think given LOVALL's strong reputation on Mumsnet and the excellent reviews for this particularly pair make this a worthy maternity wardrobe staple.

I haven't bought many maternity clothes yet but I order online via Boohoo. Huge range, I have a couple of maternity joggers and jeans from there and they're so comfortable

Our verdict

Pregnancy may feel like it lasts forever but in terms of your wardrobe, the time frame when you fit into certain clothes comfortably can be extremely transitory. If you'd rather save for that ever-growing list of baby essentials such as a baby monitor, crib and a decent breast pump rather than splash the cash on a pair of maternity jeans, Boohoo have a great range of maternity denim for as little as £8!

Though the sizing is sometimes a little off and you probably won't be getting the same level of quality as the likes of M&S or Seraphine jeans, the styles are fresh and fashionable and there are plenty to choose from, from ripped to Mom to cropped to straight leg.

H&M also. I lived in their black jeans until about 4 months post partum. Gutted when I had to finally give them up.

Our verdict

Mumsnetters love H&M MAMA for maternity wear, and the high street retailer's online range of maternity jeans offer a great choice of styles and sizes for a lower price point than Seraphine.

We love this pair of straight leg jeans for a comfortable, goes-with-everything staple, but there are a huge range of different styles of maternity jeans in the MAMA range, as well as the MAMA Before & After range too.

Some reviewers did note that the sizing can be a little off, so it might be worth trying out a couple of different options.

New Look wide leg jeans are excellent. They're called Adalae. I have them in blue and just got a black pair for winter. They're £35. True to size/maybe a bit loose.
See Post
Our verdict

Lovers of wide-leg jeans rejoice - New Look's ever popular Adalae style is now available in maternity wear, with a choice of three colours. Versatile, flattering and comfy, these jeans may be a little pricier than the like-for-like options from Boohoo, but with many a postive review, £35 isn't too extreme for an on-trend maternity jeans staple.

The fit is nice and generous and thanks to the 35% elastane stretch, these jeans should accommodate your growing bump all the way through pregnancy. Unfortunately, they aren't yet available in different leg lengths, though New Look's popular Emilee style does come in leg lengths ranging from 28 to 34.

5

Best maternity skinny jeans

M&S Maternity Ivy Over Bump Skinny Jeans

Our verdict

Some say that skinny jeans have had their moment, but if they're still a staple part of your pre-maternity wardrobe, there's no reason for that to change once your regular pair no longer fits.

These pull-on skinny jeans feature added stretch for extra comfort and are designed to hug the leg in a sleek, flattering style which works whatever the weather. Plus, they're made from responsibly-sourced cotton which uses less water, which is always a bonus for those conscious of spending too much on items they will only wear temporarily.

Reviewers like the fit, comfort and style of these jeans, though some say they run a little short so it may well be worth measuring before ordering a pair.

Our verdict

If you're looking for a simple pair of comfy maternity jeans in the universally loved, laid-back 'Mom' style, this pair from H&M MAMA certainly ticks the boxes, and does so in a choice of three colours.

While they're not the cheapest pair of jeans around, the beauty of Mom jeans are that they can be rolled up for a cropped, summery style or worn full length with trainers or ankle boots and look great either way, so they're another good maternity wardrobe staple no matter what time of year you're shopping for. This pair features 5 pockets and a nice, wide jersey panel for over-bump comfort.

Best maternity jeans for colour choice

MAMAJEANS Milano Maternity Jeans

What we like
  • Good variety of colours to choose from

  • Made in Italy

What we don't like
  • Sizing is Italian so best to consult sizing chart and reviews before purchase

  • Pricey

Price on writing: From £41 | Sizes: 6 - 20 | Colours: Choice of 14 | Waistband: Over-bump

Our verdict

If you’re feeling bored of the usual denim tones of black or blue, these MAMAJEANS offer a decent alternative.

With colours ranging from ice grey to bright red, you’re sure to find at least one pair of the MAMAJEANS Milano Jeans to suit your taste and wardrobe. They also feature a cotton elastane mix and a soft, stretchy over-bump band to keep them secure and snug.

8

Best maternity dungarees

Next Maternity Denim Dungarees

What we like
  • Good choice of sizing

  • Classic maternity style with a fresh feel

  • Great for breastfeeding

What we don't like
  • Fairly expensive

  • No choice of leg length

  • Only one colour

Key specs

Price on writing: £49 | Sizes: 6 - 22 | Colours: Blue denim

Our verdict

There's a reason why maternity dungarees are synonymous with heavily pregnant women and have been for years - because they're just so easy (and comfy!) to wear. Aside from the added couple of seconds taken to pull them down when accommodating your now overactive bladder, a good pair of dungarees is a godsend for a growing baby bump.

We love this pair from Mumsnet-approved brand Next - they offer a clean, classic look with added stretch to accommodate your bump, adjustable shoulder straps and plenty of pockets. The straight leg style can be rolled up during the warmer months or worn full-length if it's chilly, and they're a great option for breastfeeding too thanks to the ease of boob access.

9

  • Might get warm in summer

Our verdict

It might all be about the wide-leg styles these days, but if you (like Mumsnetter cosylife) are struggling to part with your jeggings, or if you just want a comfy pair of bottoms which look great under loose-fitting maternity tops and come in an excellent range of sizes and leg lengths, M&S have you covered.

Billed as 'the ultimate essential for relaxed days,' these jeggings come in a choice of indigo or black and feature a super high-waisted design to fit comfortably over your bump. The only downside is that they're probably a little too toasty for warmer days (though let's face it, even if you're due in July, they're probably worth investing in if you live in the UK).

What week do you start wearing maternity jeans?

There are no definite rules when it comes to maternity wear - do what feels most comfortable to you! However, you may feel that your bump is starting to grow around 14 weeks although you may not be showing yet. Most women start showing around 16 weeks and, by 20 weeks, you may find that loose-fitting or maternity clothes feel most comfortable.

Should you size up in maternity jeans?

It may be tempting to just buy your usual style of jeans in a bigger size but this doesn’t generally work because, while your abdomen may be fast expanding, the rest of your body will remain the same or thereabouts.

Maternity wear works in the same way as regular clothes - your usual size will be made to fit your proportions. For that reason, it’s best to buy your usual size in maternity jeans and, when trying them on, check that they fit well around your legs and bum. Buying too big may mean that they keep falling down, which can be incredibly annoying when you’re just trying to get on with your day.

What are the different types of maternity jeans?

You can wear maternity jeans with a stretchy waistband that fit under your bump or maternity jeans with a wide stretchy panel - usually made from soft jersey fabric - that will fit over your growing bump.

What is the difference between under bump and over bump maternity jeans?

Maternity wear is all about personal choice and comfort. While some pregnant women may prefer to wear their jeans under their bump, others will prefer the snugness of a jersey bump panel. Bear in mind that there are drawbacks to both options of course - with a bump panel, you can’t tuck in your tops. Under the bump jeans may not feel quite so secure and may occasionally slip down a little.

What jeans are best for pregnancy?

We rate Seraphine's Wolfe straight leg jeans as the best maternity jeans in our roundup. Beloved by A-list celebrity mums-to-be and Mumsnetters (who are all A-listers as far as we’re concerned), they offer comfort and style points through pregnancy and beyond.

How we chose our recommendations

Because we know that there’s nothing like a real recommendation from other style mavens, we first headed to the Mumsnet forums to find out which maternity jeans were rated by fashionable Mumsnet users. We compiled a list of the best maternity jeans they loved for fit, practicality, style and value for money. We then did some research across the wider web, looking at which maternity jeans were recommended by fashion experts and bloggers - and what customer reviews said about them too. Having collated all that information, we picked the best maternity jeans that we thought would make the best buys.
