Best kettle descaler, plus how to do it

If you live in a hard water area and your kettle is used regularly, it won’t take long before excess minerals can create a build-up of limescale. Limescale and residue can not only be unsightly, but they can also affect the taste of your drinks, reduce even the best kettle’s energy efficiency, and damage the element, reducing its lifespan so you’ll need to replace it more regularly.

The good news is keeping your kettle free from limescale isn’t as complicated as it sounds. Thanks to these easy-to-use kettle descalers, you can easily prolong the lifespan of your appliances without the need to scrub or sacrifice your morning coffee.

To bring you our pick of the best kettle descalers you can buy today, we’ve tapped into the tried-and-tested experiences of Mumsnet users, seeking their recommendations on the products they’ve used and rate for limescale removal - especially in hard water areas. We also looked at what cleaning experts suggest for effectiveness and combed through verified reviews to make sure the products we suggest are vetted across the board.

Plus, if you’re in the market for a new kettle, we also have a guide to the best kettles for hard water areas, with features such as hidden elements and removable filters to make maintenance simple and fuss-free.

Oust All Purpose Descaler is great. I have very hard water and there aren't kettles which prevent build up. I have a Bosch. Don't get a glass kettle.

I’ve always lived in a very hard water area. On shower heads and the kettle I use Oust sachets.

Our verdict

When Mumsnet users ask for tips on how to descale a kettle, Oust All Purpose Descaler is a product mentioned time and time again. This multi-purpose descaler can also be used on your iron, shower head and coffee machine, helping to remove limescale buildup, restore shine and prolong the lifespan of your appliances.

When we used Oust (albeit in a softer water area) we found it super straightforward to use, simply bringing a half-full kettle to the boil before pouring in one of the three sachets provided. While excessive build-up may need repeat treatments, we found Oust’s fast-working solution worked in less than ten minutes without us needing to scrub or brush the inside of the kettle.

I have the same hard water here in Somerset. Really recommend you get a kettle descaler. It's like a brillo pad thimble (you'll see what I mean when you get one). You drop it in your kettle and it stops it getting so furred up so quickly.

Our verdict

If you’re looking for a fuss-free descaling solution with a budget-friendly price tag, this Chef Aid Doughnut Kettle Descaler makes an excellent choice.

With no scrubbing, effort or harsh chemicals required, simply pop inside your kettle and continue to use it as normal. Made from durable and long-lasting stainless steel, this descaler collects limescale particles as they arise, preventing unsightly build-ups that can affect your kettle's performance.

It's worth noting, however, that it's not the best choice for see-through or glass kettles as it will be visible through the exterior.

Best odour-free kettle descaler

What we like
  • Multi-purpose descaler suitable for kettles, irons, washing machines and dishwashers

  • Works in fifteen minutes

  • Natural and odour-free

What we don't like
  • May require repeat uses on stubborn build-ups

  • Requires regular use to maintain performance, particularly in hard water areas

Our verdict

If the thought of harsh chemicals or smelly solutions is enough to put you off, citric acid is an odour-free, natural alternative that is a popular choice amongst Mumsnet users. It’s also a cost-effective option when considering the overall cost per use.

This multi-purpose solution from Dri-Pak can be used on both your small and large kitchen appliances - including freestanding and slimline dishwashers. While significant build-ups may require repeat treatments, most found citric acid to be effective after the 15-minute treatment recommended.

Live in a hard water area and used to descale kettle every week, now only fill the kettle with filtered drinking water and down to once a month cleaning. The best kettle cleaners for me are Kilrock or Waitrose essential range.

Our verdict

Kilrock is a popular brand amongst Mumsnetters living in hard water areas, where excess calcium and minerals can result in significant limescale build-ups.

While some reviewers found these sachets to be less effective in their glass kettles, Kilrock recommends these easy-to-use SLAM descaler sachets for use in both plastic and metal kettles, as well as your steam iron and coffee machine. Claiming to remove flakes and limescale from your kettle in just eight minutes, they can restore shine and improve performance in next to no time.

Best kettle descaler bags

What we like
  • 100% safe food-grade ingredients

  • Easy to use

  • Can’t spill or make a mess like powder descalers

What we don't like
  • Takes longer to work than some descalers

Our verdict

Made from 100% food-grade ingredients, these ‘tea bag style’ kettle descaler bags are a quick and convenient choice, without the risk of spills that you could experience using powdered descalers.

While they take a little longer than some kettle descalers (around 25 minutes), these universal descalers can also be used to clean shower heads and coffee makers.

Reviewers found descaler bags to be ideal for glass kettles where limescale can be visible and unsightly. Simply half-fill the kettle, drop in the bag and let it set to work, lifting away even stubborn flakes and residue.

Why do I need to descale my kettle?

Limescale-filled kettles are not only unpleasant to look at. An element covered in residue will take longer to boil and use more energy as a result. At its worst, a heavily scaled kettle will affect the taste of your water and reduce the overall lifespan of your appliance.

How to descale a kettle

While the instructions will vary from one product to the next, most descalers require a treatment time of between ten and twenty minutes.

After boiling a half-filled kettle, add the sachet or bag and leave it to work, before pouring away the solution and rinsing thoroughly. The instructions will let you know what to do after you've rinsed too - some descalers will require you to boil and rinse your kettle a few times before using it again.

Other ‘proactive’ descalers such as the stainless steel doughnut remain in the kettle during use to help actively remove flakes or limescale as they occur.

How often should you descale a kettle?

If you live in a hard water area, you should look to descale your kettle regularly to prevent limescale build-up - approximately once a month. For softer water areas, you will need to do this less regularly - with ad hoc treatments usually being sufficient.

In between treatments, you should avoid leaving water sitting stagnant in the kettle after use and may want to consider using a water filter to reduce the calcium and mineral levels before boiling.

What is the best natural kettle descaler?

As well as off-the-shelf kettle descalers like the products mentioned above, Mumsnet users have also tried and tested several natural kettle descalers, using products you probably already have in your kitchen.

Natural solutions include baking soda, lemon juice or white vinegar (dissolving one or two tablespoons in water to create a solution).

While natural solutions may require some gentle scrubbing to help release flakes and residue, they can help remove limescale and restore shine without adding unwelcome odours or chemicals. You can simply repeat if it doesn't all come off the first time.
