Our verdict

Tested by Mumsnet editor Natasha Gregson: Read our full review of the smaller model, Beko DTLCE70051W 7kg Condenser Tumble Dryer

While this Beko condenser dryer costs slightly more to run than an equivalent heat pump tumble dryer, it provides excellent overall value for money. Retailing at just £270, it offers impressive performance, with a wide range of programmes that work conveniently around your lifestyle.

Our tester and mum of four Leanne really rated the smaller 7kg model, finding it intuitive and easy to use. The GentleCare cycle can protect your more delicate fabrics, while the anti-crease programme regularly rotates the drum at the end of the cycle - so you won’t spend hours standing at your ironing board. There’s even an Xpress Super Short cycle for smaller loads - ideal when you need some school uniform dry and ready for the morning.

As a condenser tumble dryer, you need to manually empty the water tank, however, this is simple and straightforward to do. Our biggest gripe was how fiddly the filter was to clean. Some may also prefer a transparent porthole - as you’re unable to see what’s inside during the cycle.

What we like
  • Large 9kg capacity

  • Start Delay function (up to 24 hours)

  • Sensor dry options

  •  “kg detector" that adapts the drying cycle to the load

  • Super easy iron feature

What we don't like

Our verdict

With a 9kg capacity, this Candy condenser tumble dryer is ideal for larger households, with several features designed for busy families.

While the location of the water tank at the bottom of the appliance makes it a little more tricky to empty, this condenser tumble dryer offers excellent drying performance. Four intelligent sensors assess the level of moisture and stop the cycle automatically once it's dry enough to iron or fold, so you’ll only use the energy you need. Whether you’re drying towels after swimming or a quick refresh of the kid’s school uniform love the smart smart ‘kg detector’, which automatically adapts the cycle length to the size of the load.

If you have a hectic schedule, the handy start delay function allows you to plan the laundry around your day. Reviewers also love the smart functionality - helping you to monitor your cycle’s progress straight from your mobile phone.

I've got a Beko heat pump and love it. You can set it to iron dry or cupboard dry and it works, few clothes need ironing too as it doesn't overdry. It also turns the clothes over every 5 minutes or so if you can't get to it the minute it finishes so that also reduces creasing.

I've got the BEKO - Pro RapiDry B5T4823RW 8 kg Heat Pump Tumble Dryer and really rate it. Bedding does get balled up but i just give it a shake part way through. Can either be plumbed in to drain the water or use the built in tank.

While you’ll generally pay more for heat pump tumble dryers, they are by far the most energy-efficient tumble dryers. Using lower temperatures than condenser and vented tumble dryers, they recirculate generated heat inside the drum, so you can enjoy the impressive performance without increased running costs. The cycles can take a little longer as a result, but with energy prices remaining high, they make a wise long-term investment.

This Beko heat pump offers excellent value for money, with a generous 9kg drum well suited to medium households. Despite its affordable price tag (when compared to other heat pump appliances), it's packed full of impressive features, with a wide range of programmes to tailor to cycle to your contents.

We love the super quick RapiDry cycle when you need clothes dry in a hurry, while the anti-crease function prevents clothes from getting crumpled inside the drum. Reviewers found the drying sensors fairly accurate too, with the cooling blast of air allowing you to hang up or wear straight from the drum.

Best budget vented tumble dryer

Bush DHB7VTDW 7kg Vented Tumble Dryer

What we like
  • Simple controls

  • Great price

  • Auto shut-off for safety

  • Quiet Mark certified

What we don't like
  • Poor energy efficiency

  • Need to be installed against an outside wall or vented through a window

  • No drying sensor

Key specs

Price on writing: £219 | Capacity: 7kg | Size: H85 x W60 x D56.5 cm | Rated efficiency: C | Noise level: 61dB | Programmes: Timer only | Warranty: 1 year

Our verdict

Vented tumble dryers are less common these days, largely superseded by far more energy-efficient condensers and heat pump models. That said, if you’re installing against an outside wall or happy to vent through a window, vented tumble dryers can be useful if you’re short on time, with fast cycles and simple functionality for fuss-free operation.

This 7kg Bush vented tumble dryer makes a budget-friendly choice, with straightforward timer-only controls quickly and evenly. While it doesn't have any of the modern functions of a heat pump, if you value simplicity and aren't bothered about WiFi connectivity or fancy programmes, it's a solid choice.

I love my condenser dryer will never go back to vented. It’s a beko large capacity one, and the only one I’ve ever had that seems to not finish until clothes are totally dry, in the past other ones I had the clothes would still be damp and I’ve had a few where the clothes smelt musty too.

Our verdict

If you live in a large household, a washer dryer or low-capacity tumble dryer just won’t cut it, or leaving you running your dryer more frequently than you’d like.

Ideal for larger families and households, the Beko B3T41011DW condenser tumble dryer has an impressive 10kg drum, meaning you may actually reach a life goal and actually reach the bottom of your laundry basket. Thanks to the internal light, no rogue socks will disappear or get left behind in the drum.

Reviewers rated the built-in drying sensors which automatically stop the cycle when it’s dry enough to fold or pack away. While it's not quite as efficient as a heat pump model, this Beko condenser includes an eco cycle for lower energy consumption, using lower temperatures and softer drum rotations for the days you’re a little less pressed for time.

We love the automatic crease function, which rotates the drum periodically for up to two hours at the end of the cycle - preventing wrinkles and creases if your clothes are left in the drum.

  • Automatic anti-creasing function

What we don't like
  • More costly than freestanding models

  • Reviewers felt overall build quality could be better

  • Cycles are long compared to condenser dryers

I like mine. I could only get an integrated heat pump one (beko). It’s much cheaper and I’d happily take the cost effectiveness over the longer drying times. However I don’t tumble dry much. Most I will hang on an airer overnight and just finish off in the dryer. Generally only towels and sheets, so one or two washes a week.

Our verdict

If you’re looking to maintain a modern and seamless kitchen aesthetic, integrated tumble dryers are certainly worth considering. While they tend to be a little more costly than freestanding tumble dryers, this integrated heat pump tumble dryer from Beko comes at the more affordable end of the scale. Beko's 3rd appearance on this round-up, it's safe to say they're Mumsnet users' go-to choice for affordable but reliable tumble dryers.

Despite its affordable price tag, this 7kg integrated tumble dryer has an excellent energy rating and a varied selection of programmes.

While the programmes may not be as fast as condenser tumble dryers, this heat pump’s lower temperatures, combined with accurate drying sensors, help prevent overdrying - protecting your clothes from shrinkage or fading and keeping them looking their best.

We love the intelligent reverse action drum that separates the clothing and prevents it from balling up, while the automatic anti-creasing function reduces the need for ironing - even when you’re unable to empty the dryer straight away.

Reviewed by Poppy O'Neill: Read our in-depth Hotpoint NTM1192SK 9kg Heat Pump Tumble Dryer review

This heat pump model from Hotpoint retails for under £500. While the brand lost the trust of some Mumsnet users due to a recall a number of appliances in the 2010s, those manufactured after 2015 do not have the fault that lead to older machines being recalled.

With straightforward controls and cycles for every occasion, our tester thought that if anything there were too many programmes - a pretty good problem to have, in our book.

The 9kg drum is a great size for a family, and our tester uses the Eco cycle most often, which makes use of the whole 9kg. We were also impressed with how gentle the tumble dryer is on fabrics, with Hotpoint's signature ActiveCare setting to preserve colours.

The refresh cycle keep clothes fresh and crease free even after the drying cycle is finished, which is a real plus. Another great feature of the machine is its quietness. At just 65dB (about the same level of noise as normal conversation), it's unobtrusive and won't be out of place in an open-plan kitchen.

Are vented and condenser tumble dryers being banned?

  • European Union: From 1 July 2025, new vented, gas-fired and standard condenser tumble dryers can no longer be placed on the EU market. Only heat pump dryers meet the updated efficiency standards. Shops can still sell through existing stock placed on the market before this date.

  • Northern Ireland: The same rules apply under the Windsor Framework, so NI retailers cannot place new non-heat-pump dryers on the market from 1 July 2025.

  • Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales): Not yet banned. The UK government consulted in 2025 on raising standards to match the EU, but no date has been confirmed. If enacted, the phase-out would happen six months after the legislation is laid in Parliament.

Stock availability: Because most major appliance brands sell across both the UK and EU, manufacturers are already switching production towards heat pump dryers only. Even in Great Britain, where non-heat-pump dryers are still legal for now, shoppers may notice fewer vented and condenser models available as retailers run down existing stock and manufacturers stop producing new ones.

How much does it cost to use a tumble dryer?

The cost of running your tumble dryer will depend on both the type of dryer and the cycles that you use.

According to consumer champion Which?, the average vented tumble dryer will cost £139 a year to run, a condenser a little less at £127 a year. By far the most energy-efficient choice however is a heat-pump tumble dryer costing between £76 and £88 less to run.

As well as running your tumble dryer during off-peak electricity times, you can reduce the cost of your tumble dryer by opting for eco cycles wherever possible.

What’s the most cost-effective type of tumble dryer?

Heat pump tumble dryers are the most cost-effective choice. While they cost more to buy initially, their lower running costs and more energy-efficient designs mean they’ll be more cost-effective over their average life span.

Should you go for a heat pump, condenser or vented tumble dryer?

Vented tumble dryers are less common these days, with fewer options to choose from largely due to their poor energy efficiency. The decision between condenser and heat pump will depend largely on your priorities.

Condenser tumble dryers tend to be quick and easy to use, drawing in and heating cool air from the room to dry your clothes inside the drum. Any steam is then turned into water and collected in a removable tank which needs emptying regularly. While they tend to be cheaper than heat pump dryers, they can cause condensation by expelling excess warm air into the room.

If you’re looking for an affordable choice, heat pump tumble dryers are likely to be at the top end of your budget but are cheaper to run in the long term. Unlike a condenser dryer, hot air generated during the cycle is recycled and sent back through the drum multiple times, making them far more energy efficient.

With the exception of quick dry programmes for smaller loads, you will have to wait longer for your clothes to dry as a result.

What’s the best budget tumble dryer to buy?

We think the Beko DTLCE80041W 8KG Condenser Tumble Dryer is the best budget tumble dryer you can buy today. A great all-rounder for most families, this super affordable and easy-to-use tumble dryer offers impressive drying capabilities with a wide range of programmes to suit your lifestyle.
