How we tested

Mumsnet editor Poppy and her 11-year-old tested the bottle over the course of 3 months. Taking the bottle to and from school on a daily basis, they took detailed notes on how easy the bottle is to keep clean, its features and what it was like to use as a school water bottle.

Zwilling Drinks Bottle: our verdict

When it comes to picking a water bottle for school, it's remarkable how many things you need to consider. Is the bottle big enough to last your child all day? Can it be relied upon not to leak? Does it look grown-up enough? Is it easy to keep clean? The list goes on. This Drinks Bottle from Zwilling ticks all the boxes.

Firstly, it's dishwasher safe and has a wide spout without a straw, so it's very easy to keep clean and hygienic. It holds a generous 680ml, and even has ml markers up one side of the bottle, so my son could keep track of how much he was drinking throughout the day.

The lid clicks shut and has an additional flip lock, so there's no chance of leaks getting through. It also has a fabric strap and a grippy silicone sleeve, both lowering its chances of getting dropped. The bottle has sustained a few scratches during testing, but it's made of tough Tritan so the small scuffs don't make a difference to its performance.

The one drawback I could find for this bottle is the fabric strap, which gets soggy when you're cleaning the bottle and takes quite a while to dry. It's removable, but fiddly to put back on again. So when I wanted to give the bottle a quick last-minute clean before the morning school run, it was a bit of a faff to hold it out of the way of the hot tap in order to keep it dry.

I think the bottle would be a bit bit big and heavy for younger kids, but it's just right for secondary school. The design is plain and grown-up, and I wouldn't think twice about using it myself.

Is the Zwilling Drinks Bottle a good water bottle for school?

In a word, yes. We've been through many water bottles in our time and I have to say this is one of the best ones. Its simple design is easy to keep clean - there are no little nooks and crannies for germs to get stuck in, or a straw to try and scrub the inside of. Plus you can put it in the dishwasher for even more convenience and peace of mind.

The bottle has a clean, neutral design and is marketed for the gym or work as well as school, which is a definite plus when your kids get to secondary school and don't want to been seen with anything remotely cutesy or young-looking. Made from lightweight but strong Tritan, it won't weigh down their school backpack either.

With a 680ml capacity, it holds plenty of water to keep kids hydrated all day, and the lid is easy to remove for refills too. It doesn't leak and you can even pop a few lemon or cucumber slices under the fruit strainer if your child prefers a bit of flavour in their water.

Does the Zwilling Drinks Bottle offer good value for money?

At £17, it's not the cheapest reusable water bottle out there, but you can expect to pay between £12-£20 for a good quality water bottle these days. This one is built to last and won't get clogged up with bacteria, thanks to its simple and easy-to-clean lid. The design is grown-up enough for use right into adulthood, so you don't need to worry about them going off it aesthetically either.
