Soak & Sleep White French Linen Bedding review: “considered, well made and rather grown up”

Can white linen survive two kids, two white dogs and a Yorkshire winter? My husband and I have been trying the Soak & Sleep French linen sheets to find out.

My verdict

If you love the relaxed, rumpled look of linen and you sleep hot, this is a very good example of it. It’s crisp, breathable and feels like proper linen rather than a cotton impersonator.

It does crease. A lot. And if you have an especially deep mattress, you may need to check the depth carefully before ordering (if you have a particularly high mattress, make sure you choose the deep fitting option).

But after 30 days of winter use, I’d happily recommend it to anyone specifically looking for linen bedding. It feels considered, well made and rather grown up.

How I’ve tested the Soak & Sleep White French Linen Bedding

We’ve slept on the super king fitted sheet, duvet cover and Oxford pillowcases for 30 days through a Yorkshire winter.

Our setup isn’t exactly standard. We have a Silentnight Miracoil mattress topped with a Soak & Sleep mattress topper, which adds extra height. Finding fitted sheets deep enough to stay put is an ongoing saga in this house - so while I may have tested the standard fitted depth, it’s good to see there is a deeper option available to choose at 40cm.

The bedding has been used nightly by two adults and frequently commandeered by two small white dogs who insist on sleeping on the bed and, unhelpfully, blend perfectly into white linen at 3am. There has been more than one accidental nudge.

How the Soak & Sleep White French Linen Bedding feels to sleep on

Out of the packet, this is unmistakably linen. It’s crisp, slightly coarse and feels very different from cotton sateen. If you’re used to smooth, hotel-style sheets, it may feel a little stiff at first.

But linen softens with time. After a few weeks it started to feel more supple and broken in. Not silky like the Tielle bedding we’ve previously tried but comfortably textured. Think favourite jeans rather than polished silk blouse.

The cooling effect is noticeable. When you first get into bed, there’s a freshness to it that my permanently warm husband immediately appreciated. It doesn’t cling, it doesn’t trap heat and it never felt clammy overnight.

For me, though, in the depths of winter I’m slightly less sold. Linen has that breathable, sun-drenched energy. It’s brilliant at keeping you cool, which is the point, but it doesn’t give that cocooned, wrapped-up feeling I sometimes want in January. I suspect I’ll love it far more come summer.

How well is the Soak & Sleep White French Linen Bedding made?

Very well. The stitching is neat and strong, the tie closures feel sturdy (though they do take a while to tie together) and the Oxford pillowcases sit nicely with their 5cm border. The envelope closures keep everything looking tidy, too.

The fabric has natural slubs throughout, which is exactly what you expect from good linen. It gives it texture and character rather than a flat, uniform finish.

Our only real issue has been the fitted sheet depth. Because our mattress and mattress topper combination is taller than average, we’ve experienced some corner slippage. I don’t think this is a design flaw so much as a mattress height problem. If you have a particularly deep setup, it’s worth checking measurements carefully - though it's unlikely you'll have this problem if you use a mattress protector that's thinner.

How the Soak & Sleep White French Linen Bedding washes

Yes, it creases. A lot. The first wash made that very clear. There is no universe in which I am ironing a super king linen set. I don’t own industrial laundry equipment and frankly I don’t want to. So we’ve embraced the rumpled look.

To be fair, that’s the point of linen. It’s meant to look relaxed and slightly undone. If you prefer crisp, flat hotel perfection, this will frustrate you. If you like that “lived-in but intentional” feel, it works.

The white has held up well so far. No dulling, no odd marks, despite two children and two dogs regularly climbing in. Soak & Sleep recommends washing at 30 to 40°C and avoiding detergents with optical brighteners, which is worth noting if you’re keen to keep whites looking fresh.

Line drying works well and removing it slightly damp can reduce some creasing, but it will never look pressed and polished. That’s simply not linen’s personality.

Is the Soak & Sleep White French Linen Bedding worth the price?

Linen is rarely cheap and once you move into king and super king sizes, you are firmly in investment territory. If you just want white bedding that looks smart, there are cheaper cotton options on the high street.

But if you specifically want French flax linen with Oeko-Tex certification and a two-year guarantee, this feels fairly priced for the quality. It doesn’t feel rushed or mass-produced.

I’m already a fan of Soak & Sleep as a brand and I would buy this myself, particularly for summer use.

Final verdict: is this the linen bedding for you?

Soak & Sleep’s White French Linen bedding does exactly what good linen should. It’s breathable, textured and effortlessly relaxed. It softens with time, keeps hot sleepers comfortable and looks beautifully undone on the bed.

It will crease. It may not suit especially tall mattresses without checking the depth carefully. And in the middle of winter, it won’t give you that heavy, cocooning feel that cotton sometimes does.

What I do appreciate is the flexibility of the range. You can buy everything separately, from pillowcases to deep 40cm fitted sheets, or opt for a full bed set if you prefer it all done in one go. Given our mattress height saga, I’d try the 40cm deep version next time. It’s helpful that the choice is there rather than being stuck with a one-depth-fits-all approach.

If you love linen and want a crisp white set that feels grown up, breathable and properly made, this is a very strong contender. Just don’t expect it to look freshly ironed. Ever.
