The breast pump designed to mimic your baby's tongue: Annabella Breast Pump review

The Annabella Breast Pump claims to be the world's first breast pump to use technology designed to mimic your baby's tongue for maximum milk output and comfort. We put it to the test with a breastfeeding mum of twins to find out how well it performed.

Overall rating:
What we like
  • Our tester Tabi found it very comfortable to use, more so than other pumps she has tried

  • Very easy to set up and use for the first time

  • Very efficient - the tongue mimicking technology is designed to produce more milk via stimulating oxytocin and prolactin hormones and Tabi found this to be effective

  • Flange settings can be adjusted to fit different nipple sizes

  • Easy to take apart and clean

What we don't like
  • Expensive

  • Quite noisy - Tabi said she wouldn't feel comfortable using the pump in a quiet setting

  • Not hands-free unless you use the hands-free bra (which our tester Tabi found awkward to use)

Key specs

Single or double pump: Double | Power source: Rechargeable battery | Number of settings: 9 suction/vacuum levels | Closed system: Yes | BPA-free: Yes

How we tested the Annabella Breast Pump

Tabi used the Annabella Double Breast Pump to help supplement breastfeeds for her newborn twin babies over a testing timeframe of just over four weeks. During this time she used the pump twice a day in between breastfeeding sessions to help with supply. Over the testing timeframe, Tabi took extensive notes on the pump's efficiency, comfort, ease of use and sturdiness as well as ease of cleaning and overall effectiveness.

How easy is the Annabella Pump to set up and use first time?

"The pump was very easy to set up and use," explained Tabi. "It arrived in good packaging, looked really nice aesthetically and was very easy to fit together following the instructions."

The Annabella fits very nicely on the breast and has a skin to skin feel about it.

Is the Annabella Pump comfortable to use?

"My pump came with a bra so it can be used hands-free, however I found this difficult to use as it was hard to push the pumps into position. Without the bra, I found the Annabella very comfortable to use - definitely the most comfortable pump I have used so far."

It is very comfortable, it doesn't leave my nipples sore which is great when you are pumping regularly at the start.

Does the pump require leaning forward to use?

"If you use the bra you don't have to lean forward, but without this I did generally find I have to lean forward to use the pump otherwise it would leak out of the bottom."

How noisy is the Annabella?

"I'd say it has an average noise level of a breast pump - not one for use in quiet spaces!"

How efficient is the Annabella breast pump?

Annabella breast pump in testing

It's very efficient, I've found it has taken the most milk compared to other breast pumps I've used. The massage setting underneath to stimulate the breast is a really great feature.

Are there different sizes of flange available?

"There's only one size (18mm - 24mm) but you can adjust this on the sides. There are two cup sizes to use and while you have to do a bit of maneuvering to get the breast in place, it works well once you do."

Is the pump heavy?

"Yes it is heavier than other pumps due to the massage motors, and because of this it's not as portable as other pumps, however it goes in our changing bag fine."

How does the Annabella Breast Pump compare to other pumps you've used?

The Annabella is the best breast pump I've used so far.

How easy is the pump to clean?

"It's very easy to take apart to clean - there's a simple click and screw in system. It can go in the dishwasher and/or steriliser and we've not noticed any fading or discolouration after several washes and sterilisations so far."

How discreet is the Annabella Breast Pump? Would you use it in a work setting?

"I'd say if you have a quiet space and/or a decent break room at work, you could easily pump a decent amount in about 30 minutes. It also has very good battery life for the day's use."

How transportable is the Annabella Breast Pump?

"You'd need a sturdy bag or backpack to easily take the pump out and about. It's not as easy to transport as the smaller USB ones that can sit inside a nursing bra, so its ease of portability really depends on where you are and where you're going."

What is your favourite thing about the Annabella pump?

"The ease of use and the feel of it on the breast - it felt really gentle and did not make me sore."

Is there anything you would change?

"I would make the bra more adjustable or size-inclusive as I didn't find that it fitted me well enough for me to use the pump hands-free."

Overall verdict:

"I really like the feel of the pump, its ease of use and the efficiency. It felt really sturdy and high-quality and none of the parts felt flimsy."

While it is at the higher end of anyone's budget, I think it's well worth investing in if you want to ensure milk supply will be at its highest, especially when your baby is learning to latch.
