30 days only

Feeling frustrated and sad about my daughter’s three-day suspension.

My 13-year-old daughter has been given a three day suspension for making a TikTok dance with friends in the school toilets while on break and I’m feeling frustrated and sad about it.
I completely understand the reason for the rule. Filming in toilets raises privacy concerns, and I accept that she broke the rules and should face a consequence…as does she!
According to her, several girls were dancing together and knew they were being recorded. The video wasn’t posted or shared. I know that doesn’t make it acceptable, but I do think the circumstances should matter.
This is her second year of secondary school and she has never been in trouble before and has a really positive school record. She plays sport and has had awards for attendance, won competitions etc. The policy says “up to three days”, so I’m struggling to understand why three days is appropriate for her first incident, but the decision has been made.
I’m not asking for her to get away with it. I am and will support the school in making sure she understands why it was wrong. I just feel disappointed that one lapse in judgement has resulted in three days out of school when she has otherwise consistently behaved well.
Has anyone had a similar experience? Did the school take your child’s previous record into account?
Please go easy I’m disappointed and angry at my dd and this situation, just looking for friendly advice I suppose.

Was the wording of the behaviour policy ‘up to 3 days’ for having the phone out @Ffs1234

Whole class movement breaks tend to happen in the classroom, so how was she in the toilets? I'd be very surprised if the school let numerous students out of the classroom in one go for a movement break together without a member of staff with them. It'd be an insurance nightmare, let alone an immediate behaviour issue.

They are let out to the toilets…the whole class. It’s not that hard to understand. The teacher was going between the boys and girls toilets maybe. I know there’s toilet stewards also.

Yes up to 3 days for the phone out in the bathroom area.

I am shocked by the responses quite frankly.

No, OP’s daughter shouldn’t have done it. Am fairly certain she won’t do it again.

However, 1 day suspension would surely suffice.

Whatever happened to fun?

Loos maybe grim but dancing and filming a dance by teenage girls doesn’t in my opinion warrant a 3 day suspension NOR the negative comments on this thread.

OP your daughter sounds amazing and I hope she continues to do well in school AND have fun.

I think, sadly, it’s the huge potential risk and consequences of social media for teenagers that means this can’t just be ‘fun’ and that’s where the severity of the punishment has come in. The chances are a few girls filming themselves dancing in the toilets is harmless, but filming in the toilets could have such horrendous consequences that the school have to take an absolute zero tolerance approach here - maybe they’ve made an example of them by doing so early on in the year and therefore mitigated genuine risk / harm by others?

sittingonabeach · 19/10/2026 21:14

For those saying it is a harsh punishment, she had her phone out and was filming in a toilet. Can some of you not see why that had to be harshly punished?

I have recently been involved with a permanent exclusion for pupil mucking about in the toilets. Luckily no camera involved

I'll never understand schools in this country. During a sanctioned break this person's daughter and a few friends decide to be creative and make a dance video and the administration decide to suspend them for 3 frickin days??!! What a way to punish innovation, but I guess that's the whole point isn't it? We need more drones for the daily grind.

Just tell your daughter she did nothing wrong and you are proud of her. Institutions in this country just exist to pull people down instead of letting them shine.

Ah so rules are there to be ignored?
Don't talk stupid, she did a lot wrong.

just to be clear it was by the sink area not the actual toilet stall…not that it makes a difference

She will be fine. If she is a good kid overall this will only be a glitch - and she gets a free holiday ))

Make sure you request classwork for the three days, schools sometimes not very good with this. She may also feel weird going back.

I personally feel suspensions are counter productive... but you can't fight against the system!

IStillHearTheWaves · 19/10/2026 22:06

She made a mistake and didn't think through the consequences of her actions, or think about why this might land her in trouble. She sounds like a generally good kid, so it's a case of live and learn and understanding that school rules exist for a reason.

jeez what is wrong with people! No way should there have been a punishment for this girl, she did nothing wrong apart from have some fun and other people need to stop being so dramatic over nothing

Not allowed phones out, filming in toilet area. They can film dance outside school

Pieceofpurplesky · 19/10/2026 22:14

Movement breaks in a lot of schools are not a toilet break, they are movement time from one lesson to another. My current school has a five minute movement break - you go straight to lesson.
Seems the OP's DD's School let the whole class/school out for the toilet - which seems a bit odd. Must be a nightmare to police!

why shouldn’t they do what they like - it’s not impacting on anyone else. The authoritarianism of some schools and parents is astounding.

So you can’t see why there should be rules about phones in school toilets?

ElanaohElana · 19/10/2026 22:29

I obviously went to a very rough school because people weren’t even suspended when they were caught smoking weed in the toilets. It was a detention or if the teacher couldn’t be bothered a sigh and told to get to class. Those of us who didn’t smoke or do drugs just let them get on with it.

Other people can just move out the way; there’s no malicious intent, and anyway it’s an unenforceable rule since it would rely on students snitching, which no one with any sense of societal norms would do.

It wasn’t shared.

But it would have been, had a teacher not interrupted them?

Do non-teachers realise how much extra work this will probably give them? It’s not just a matter of saying, “Do exercise 5 p231 questions 1-10,” partly because if the student was not in the lesson they may not know how to do the new work.

In England schools have to provide work for suspended pupils. Pupils also shouldn’t be out and about during school hours

Why should murderers and rapists not do what they want?
Why does society need any rules?
Kids are at school to learn, not to be dancing in some fucking grim toilets. The phone shouldn't have even been turned on.

seahorsessky · 19/10/2026 22:45

Watch Carrie (you can stream it now). Yes, it's obviously fiction. But there have been so many things that have really happened, and too much of teachers' time is take up dealing with things that just wouldn't have been part of their job 20 years ago, meaning they're struggling to do the things they should be able to do. Most schools have phone bans now round where I live, because parents were giving smartphones to kids and there was a lot of bullying and one serious consequence-and that girl's parents had only given her a dumbphone, but she was recorded by someone else whose parents gave her a smartphone and didn't prevent her posting stuff online, when she wasn't even a teenager.

Trytobegood22 · 19/10/2026 22:47

I’m confused as to why you’re frustrated with the school. She was caught using a phone she shouldn’t be creating a TikTok in the toilets. You are disappointed in her and rightly so. What did the school
do wrong?

This is a clear example of false equivalence - equating murderers with girls having fun is ridiculous.

the disproportionality of the punishment is shocking, as is the number of people living in a parallel universe who agree with this level of discipline being imposed for what is a harmless act.

If children are ingenious enough to have their phones in school without being caught and have some fun amongst the learning, why shouldn’t they do so?
