Housekeeper playing music- aibu?

NoMusicPlease · 22/10/2026 16:24

I live in a large house on a farm. I have a housekeeper who comes in each day between 10-6.

Today I was in the garden and she drove up to the house and parked outside. I could hear her music which annoyed me because I moved to the country for peace and quiet. It wasn't blasting but I don't want to hear any music while I'm outside.

I told her she's not allowed to play music while she's driving on the farm and she seemed a bit upset and was much quieter than normal. I think that might have to do with her personal circumstances because she's currently getting divorced.

Was I being unreasonable?

YANBU. Hopefully she doesn't look at you either.

TheFormerMrsTruelove · 22/10/2026 21:37

It’s ok, after only 30 minutes of being adamant she was in the right, she had an epiphany and apologised 🙄

Teanandtoast · 22/10/2026 21:46

Oh my days!!!

She had it playing for a couple of minutes while she was gathering her things.

I think she should have turned it off as soon as she stopped the car.

Two whole minutes? FGS! Suspect you'll be looking for a new housekeeper soon.

Lol, $27 an hour isn't even a particularly good wage for housecleaning, let alone the exceptionally generous rate you seem to think it is. My parents had a cleaner come weekly over 20 years ago and because my mom was an absolute neat freak, they were only at our house for about 2–3 hours and yet they paid $100 per visit, which worked out to roughly $35–$50 an hour, OVER TWO DECADES AGO. We pay our cleaner more than that now, so I'm really not sure why you think $27 an hour in 2026 is some incredible act of generosity.

£27 an hour and free accommodation with all bills paid (in a very nice cottage on the farm) is a good rate, particularly in North East England.

Here are other jobs around my general location.

It's a very good package.

Definitely annoyed one is not allowed to use thumb screws on staff nowadays to teach them a lesson ...

Sorry OP, I hadn't caught up with your updates before posting - I started my post hours ago and sent it without reading your later posts. I'm glad that you acknowledge that you were being unresonable and apologised/explained to your housekeeper. I suffer with my ears as well, so understand as a fellow sufferer.

All that nastiness when you didn't read past the first post. 🙄🙄

Okay, I just read her update and lol, poor baby had ear surgery. Okay, cool. My widow-maker artery tore two months ago, causing a heart attack and I'm only 37 and I also have MS and yet somehow I still manage not to treat people who work for me like shit because I'm not a total bitch. Having medical problems doesn't give you a free pass to be an insufferable jerk to other people. There's absolutely no excuse for that behavior and I'm baffled that anyone thinks her update somehow makes it acceptable.

No, it really isn't and no amount of you posting links is gonna make it so.

£27 per hour, a free cottage with bills paid isn't a good deal? I live in the North East and it's more than 99% of people I know are getting.

You have to be on a wind up.

I'm sorry you feel that way but it is a good wage. I'm curious how much you think she should be getting?

Who on earth do you think you are?????

You’re being very unreasonable

Oh, whatever, you only think that's a good wage because wages in the UK are so crap in general and OMG, I'm terribly sorry I don't know how to type the pound symbol on my laptop. You knew perfectly well what I meant, but apparently nitpicking a currency symbol is easier than addressing the actual point.

I assumed you weren’t posting from the UK. £27 is a good hourly rate for domestic work, so nothing to castigate the OP on that score, more than twice the national minimum wage.

Are you ok? That’s a very extreme reaction.

Your parents were mugs (and you are very rude and shouty). Here in 2026 West London, my cleaner comes for 2 hours a week and charges £18.50ph.

Ohnobackagain · 22/10/2026 22:22

I think getting her an appointment at your dentist is overstepping a bit to be honest. Giving her the time off is enough @NoMusicPlease

It's your driveway so your rules. She isn't a guest, she's an employee. No different to an employer advising the entire site is smoke-free.

Also, it's your home so it's up to you if you want your employee to disturb your peace and quiet.

You're not paying her to like you. And it isn't a big ordeal to ask someone to turn off their music before they reach your property.

I didn't force her into it. I asked if she wanted me to see if I could get an appointment. Given the result I'm happy she took me up on it. She had an abscess under a wisdom tooth.

You do understand the difference between dollars and pounds yeah?! As a part time housekeeper I would be thrilled at £27ph
