Being offended by being left on read after sex

I have started getting close to a guy I have known for years who I know through work (I work in a person facing role). He is going through divorce, as am I. Neither of us has slept with anyone since the person we married. He has been really sweet, helping me with jobs around the house, at his own expense and has brought me chocolates and stuff. He has recently taken me to a medical appointment, which he insisted on doing, then we went for a meal. He has opened up to me about himself, really personal info that I was surprised he told me. He made it clear he didn't want a relationship. I said I don't either, which I don't, I'm happy with the occasional date and sex once in a blue moon (we have busy lives). He is definitely not with his ex because I know his family.
Anyway, we had sex recently for the first and only time. He messaged me straight after to say it was amazing (which it was, I told him that at the time). We were texting each other and before I went to sleep, I told him that the bed smells of him and put a little heart emoji and I said I wished I could have a big cuddle. He saw it and left it on read. No reply at all. I went to sleep really annoyed after a beautiful day.

Am I being unreasonable expecting a reply to this?

He is acting like it was never said. For context, before he left, he gave me a massive squeeze in my hall, for a good few minutes. I was actually taken aback by how affectionate he was the entire time he was here. Now it feels like it's gone to shit so I've withdrawn.

I think it's just damn rude tbh. He didn't even reply the next day. I've messaged him again, cancelling plans to go out and said I'm not in the mood for chatting. I feel rude doing this but I'm too offended to pretend I'm not.

I think it must take a very special kind of woman to have a FWB relationship. I know I would become emotionally involved with a man if I had a lot of sex with him. You have now discovered it’s not for you either. No great harm done so let it go and concentrate on what’s important for you right now. He may back off but hopefully he won’t. Good luck.

NooNoo1979 · 18/09/2026 14:29

I’d literally run a mile if my fwb messaged me what you sent that guy after sex.
it sounds too much for something that’s supposed to be casual sorry OP

Why are you picking on her?

HazelOP1972 · 18/09/2026 16:08

What? Was just saying a normal thing. First thing youd want to do is strip the bed! Think he has been scared off...next....

OriginalSkang · 18/09/2026 16:09

You have sex and then instantly strip the bed?

What, within two minutes of his departure? Are you terrified of Sex Sheet Imprints or something?

Your comments are mean, and you're picking on someone when they're already feeling terrible about themselves. No need, and you know it.

Dont overthink it. You two are good. carry on !.

Annteeta · 19/09/2026 07:37

I think you're overthinking this. If, as you say, you don't want a relationship, why are you bothered? I wouldn't read too much into the lack of response. Chill. You're making yourself sound very clingy.

Lollipop7654 · 19/09/2026 08:22

When I mentioned his smell, I was referring to his aftershave. There was nothing else on the sheets 😉 And no, I didn't change them immediately because I wasn't bothered. Some people change their sheets every day, I don't. Sorry if that's gross.

Regarding the scenario itself, we spent all day yesterday messaging back and forth. We have decided to stay friends and leave sex out of it.

He has been messaging me this morning and has been leaving me voice clips telling me what he's upto today and saying he's glad I feel well today. Total normal behaviour for us, exactly as it was before the sex.

When I said FWB is not for me, he said he understood and asked me to still be mates.

My mom is coming to my appointment with me (I hadn't initially told her about the cancer scare). He has insisted he will pick us up and drop us at mine and will bring me some biscuits (in joke of ours).

So all back to normal. It went a bit crazy for a while there and my emotions were all over the show but we're over it. And I thoroughly enjoyed myself that night, as did he. So there we are, lesson learnt. Friendship prevailed. Happy days!

I’m so pleased things have been sorted. Wishing you all the best and i hope your hospital goes ok x

SunnyLilacFawn · 19/09/2026 09:26

Glad you're both back to 'normal' OP.

Do you know what, I recognise this - I think he is starting to develop feelings for you and is scared. Scared of his feelings and committing again, getting hurt etc. He said he didn't want a relationship (as did you) but you're both clearly very fond of each other so he will now blow a bit hot and cold as he battles with his feelings.

When I first knew him My DH said he didn't want anything serious after coming out of a long relationship. He would be really lovely, seemed like he was really into me then leave me on read when I said anything slushy or sent him a link to a song etc. Anyway, he ended up marrying me! 😀

I'm sure you will have sex again as you've done it now and both said it was 'amazing'. My advice would be don't put a lable or linitations on it. See how it goes with no pressure either way.

Hope you get the all clear on your cancer scare and good luck with however this freindship/relationship pans out. You sound lovely and I wish you all the best xx

Katflapkit · 19/09/2026 12:32

I posted up thread to say that you shouldn't have slept with him because you have probably ruined a good friendship and a support line by making it weird. Happy to see that I was wrong and good to read that you have had 'the talk' to clear the air.

The 'trick' now is not to do again - easier said than done now you've seen the baked goods fresh out of the oven. A lot of FWB start off as drunken fumbles with mates, ego boosts with people you know likes you but you're not feeling it or with straggly ends with ex's. As the above poster said, it's bound to happen again. Don't torture yourself - not with this guy. Practice saying 'No. As great as it was last time, I don't want sex to muddy the waters and ruin our friendship'. If you going down the FWB route for a while, you need to stretch your area code.

Good luck OP.

Thanks everyone! It was my first time posting and I'm glad I did. Thank you for your honesty and thanks for the kind words too 😊 x

I might be just an old softie but I get the feeling this isn't the end of things, "romantically", between you and him. I think he's got deep feelings for you, whether he realises it or not! Whatever happens, good luck.
