Aibu feeling uneasy about men taking little girls to the toilet in the womens toilet?

I've seen this a few times and I dont know what is the right thing to do.
So the other week we were at the cinema. I took my daughter to the toilet and as I was waiting for her a man came out of a cubicle with a little girl and went to wash her hands.
It got me thinking.
I feel uncomfortable a man in the womens toilet. I understand how you'd potentially feel uncomfortable taking a daughter into the mens toilets.
And the only other option in this situation was the disabled toilet but morally thats wrong.

I dont know what I feel is right in this situation so wanted to know other people's opinions.
So yabu: its right for a man to take girl into female toilets
Yanbu: he should take her somewhere else...but where?

A man on his own is clearly not supposed to be there, but a man with a young female child?

She sure as hell doesn’t need to go to the gents!!!

Why? She's with her dad

Not up to you. Parents will do what they need to do.

You don't mean parents though do you? You mean men.

Because women will take children into the women's toilets.

You are arguing for men to do what they want regardless of women's valid and fact based feelings.

Will the people saying "use the disabled toilet" please stop. That is completely unacceptable

I work with sex offenders if you'd seen what I had you wouldn't want men in spaces where women are vulnerable. I also spent several years working with victims of domestic and sexual abuse, again almost all women. And yes NAMALT but it is men. Let's not pretend the risks are the same both ways. No MAN needs to go into a female toilet. There are no women taking their little boys into the men's. Funny how since the guidance was released about TIM using women's toilets there is now another reason for men to go into women's toilets

ErrolTheDragon · Yesterday 11:54

Blokes absolutely shouldn’t be going in women’s loos (or changing rooms).
And neither should women be taking boys over 8 into the ladies. If they’ve got any sort of disability be it physical or SEN then obviously they should use the disabled loos without a qualm.

Whats needed, obviously, is more provision of family-friendly loos - large enough for a parent, pushchair and more than one child of whatever sex to use. There are some of these - often of course also the baby change - but it’s weird how often places which have lots of families visiting don’t provide them - zoos, museums etc.

I can’t even put into words how much I disagree with you and think YABVU.

Men’s toilets have urinals. Why should a little girl be faced with penises of other men, rather than a cubicle with her dad in a normal bathroom?

Insane.

Then we should get rid of urinals so that all the men's toilets just have cubicles and therefore it's fine.

MiceSpiders · Yesterday 11:54

If I see a man in women's toilets regardless of who he is with I will tell him to leave

I wouldn't care.

They don’t “need” to bring a girl into the men’s toilets . There is zero excuse for a man being in there . Zero . It’s so snowflakey and ridiculous attitude that a girl can’t go to the men’s toilets with their father . Little boys are just as vulnerable as little girls . I bring my little boy to the women’s changing room when swimming . He doesn’t bat an eyelid if there are women changing in there.

Bunnycat101 · Yesterday 11:55

My husband never took my girls into the women’s loo. If he was out on his own he either used the disabled, took them in the men’s or waited outside the women’s loo. My girls pretty quickly decided they didn’t like the men’s toilets so if we’re all together they’d have always gone with me.

I think the trickier age is probably 4-5. At that point they were old enough to not like the men’s but might sometime need help with wiping for a poo and a bit too young to go into the women’s toilets alone.

Nonsense it’s perfectly acceptable…. Its hardly
going to be happening with alarming regularity and I’m sure the Dads would be sensible enough to let others use the facilities first if there’s a queue.

I bet the same women arguing this isn’t okay would still bring their sons into the women’s. Hypocrisy.

What? That's the whole point

No I won't stop. And I say this is as the mother of a disabled child.

Personally I think men should take their daughters into the men's toilets but if they really won't for whatever reason then they should use the disabled toilet which is unisex and a single entity rather than taking them into the women's toilets where they will encounter women who might reasonably expect privacy.

However I think they should just take them into the men's toilets.

TinyTempest · Yesterday 11:57

He's taking the child for a pee, not hanging round trying to peer over the cubicle doors.

It wouldn't bother me one jot as long as the girl got to pee when she needed to.

Crow55 · Yesterday 11:57

The fact remains parents get to make their safeguarding decisions not a load of randoms on a MN thread.

The Legal Status

  • No criminal offense: There is no specific UK law that makes it a crime for a man to enter a women's public toilet to help his child.
  • Business rules: Private shops, restaurants, and venues set their own access policies.
  • EHRC guidance: The Equality and Human Rights Commission issued guidance stating that single-sex spaces like toilets should generally operate based on biological sex.
  • Not direct law: This official guidance helps businesses create local policies, but it is not a direct criminal statute
ToffeePennie · Yesterday 11:57

In this situation - where there is a disabled loo available he should have taken them there.

NullaEffugium · Yesterday 11:58

Notateacheranymore · Yesterday 11:04

All of the times I have seen it - less than a dozen - he has been 100% engaged in his task, with a young lady CLEARLY too young to manage by herself, and some of them have even apologised for being in the space. I have always said they are fine, and have even stood by the door to let other ladies know as they enter so they can choose to or not. Not one woman has ever turned around and waited till he and his child left.

Maybe where I live is a den of acceptance for this, but the OP’s disapproval or hand wringing is a none event in real life.

It is same where I am.

Don't be ridiculous.

If the toilet is vacant, of course it's not unacceptable.

And if they come out to someone waiting, they'd have to wait if a disabled person had been in there.

Random321 · Yesterday 12:00

Can anyone actually explain why it'a wrong, where the risk lies or why they are uncomfortable?

There's a lot of sweeping statements but the reasin why us missing from the majority?

YANBU but there should be a third space for dads to take little girls and for mums to take little boys. Was there another space or was it just ladies/mens?

Insane.

They can use the cubicle in the men’s toilet . I went to the men’s changing rooms with my dad when I was a child . I can vaguely remember seeing the urinals and thinking they were gross . If I caught a glimpse of a man naked it certainly didn’t do me any harm. What’s the big deal ? Seeing men minding their own business doing a pee isn’t a traumatic or sexual sight . It’s just life . Fgs such ridiculous snowflakey attitudes

Cicchetti · Yesterday 12:01

YABU to say that it's morally wrong to use the disabled toilets for this. It's a perfect use case.

stillhiding1990 · Yesterday 12:01

Random321 · Yesterday 11:36

I think this is absolute nonsense.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with a father taking his little girl into the female toliets and it's a far better option given the urinals in most men's toilets.

People give out about absent fathers yet critise the men looking after their kids in situations like this.

What's the risk? What's the threat?
There is none.

Disabled toilets exit for a reason and should not be used instead.

Men can't do anything right according to MN!.

There’s cubicles as well, you think men shit in urinals ?
