Aibu feeling uneasy about men taking little girls to the toilet in the womens toilet?

I've seen this a few times and I dont know what is the right thing to do.
So the other week we were at the cinema. I took my daughter to the toilet and as I was waiting for her a man came out of a cubicle with a little girl and went to wash her hands.
It got me thinking.
I feel uncomfortable a man in the womens toilet. I understand how you'd potentially feel uncomfortable taking a daughter into the mens toilets.
And the only other option in this situation was the disabled toilet but morally thats wrong.

I dont know what I feel is right in this situation so wanted to know other people's opinions.
So yabu: its right for a man to take girl into female toilets
Yanbu: he should take her somewhere else...but where?

You are allowed to use the accessible toilets. It’s not ‘Morally wrong’
My local shopping centre is being renovated, and there are no family rooms atm.
Am I not allowed to use the toilet now while I’m with my newborn, toddler and a buggy?
They are there for anyone to use, they nearly always have a baby change there, which again indicates they are for families to also use.

I personally have no problem with him in there if there was not family or accessible toilet, though it would have been a much more comfortable option for both of them. Maybe he didn’t use it, as it was occupied and she really needed the toilet?
I would much rather him in the women’s then her in the men’s.

It's illegal and my dh managed fine with our dd when she was little. Only a certain type of man goes into a female only space. Absolutely sick of this argument.

Sirzy · Yesterday 11:39

The problem is most places have ONE disabled toilet. The more other groups we start sending that way the harder it becomes for those with disabilities, especially disabilities impacting bowel and bladder function, to actually go out at all.

The disabled toilet is often barely suitable anyway (and completely unsuitable for too many people with disabilities who require changing places toilets) and every person who uses it when they aren’t disabled and can access the main toilet blocks make life even harder.

please think before just jumping into the disabled toilet.

I can’t even put into words how much I disagree with you and think YABVU.

Men’s toilets have urinals. Why should a little girl be faced with penises of other men, rather than a cubicle with her dad in a normal bathroom?

Insane.

Grumpyoldcat · Yesterday 11:40

If the child is very little then either the mens or disabled/family. No way should a man enter female toilets with his daughter.

UncannyFanny · Yesterday 11:41

What is it you think a man with his small child to the toilet is going to do? Leave her in the cubicle while he goes around sexually assaulting everyone? There are things to have issues with and things to move on a find something more important to worry about.

Crow55 · Yesterday 11:41

YABVU Safeguarding of children trumps everything. Dads absolutely should be able to accompany their little girls if necessary and young boys should be able to accompany their mums if necessary.

In the UK, there is no direct legislation that prevents a parent or guardian from bringing a child of the opposite sex into a public restroom with them. It is generally understood and widely accepted that safeguarding and supervising a young child takes precedence over strict single-sex bathroom rules.

No parent should ever put the safety of their children second to a MN thread and the fact remains nobody is ever going to do anything about it anyway. It takes 2 minutes to go to the loo and supervise handwashing. Most times I’m in the ladies I rarely see anybody.

Do what you need to do as a parent to keep your children safe.

I would love you to point to the part of the law that makes this illegal. You’ll actually find the Equality Act gives a specific example of a man entering a female space with a child under 10 being appropriate.

It doesn't make sense to me and seems to be coming out of an American movement online. You don't want you daughter around men in toilets so you a man go into the women's toilets where other people's daughters are

Edited

Yes but they go in a cubicle in the ladies, rather than young girls having to walk past men with their penis hanging out at a urinal.

Then he shouldn’t be taking her in the men’s either.

Tralalalala88 · Yesterday 11:43

It’s absolutely ridiculous my dad had to mind me and my sister a lot when we were kids. He brought us to the men’s toilets . If girls shouldn’t be in the men’s neither should little boys or little boys shouldn’t be in the women’s changing rooms either . What do they think will happen with the dad right there?

tabbycatcuddles · Yesterday 11:43

As a non-Brit, I've always found this prudish hand-wringing about loos a bit embarrassing for those who do it. It's a loo. You have a private cubicle. No one will see you there. You can't exactly send a small girl to the loos alone, and disabled toilet isn't always an option.

redbullsurvivor · Yesterday 11:44

I bet the same women arguing this isn’t okay would still bring their sons into the women’s. Hypocrisy.

Lemonpossett · Yesterday 11:44

Don’t think using the disabled toilet is in any way ‘morally wrong’ in these circumstances…. In fact seems the perfect option.

Tralalalala88 · Yesterday 11:45

UncannyFanny · Yesterday 11:43

Why not ? What is going to happen in the men’s toilet with the dad right there if she uses the cubicle . What is the difference between this and a little boy going into the loo with their mum or dad

MyOtherTimePiece · Yesterday 11:45

It's never occurred to me to take my son's into the men's toilets, so it's bizarre to me that a dad would even think about going into the women's toilets because he has a female child

How is that hypocrisy? If with mother, child goes into women's toilets. If with father, child goes into men's toilets.

mondaytosunday · Yesterday 11:46

I would take my young son into the women’s toilets. I would think it should work the other way but I know people feel uneasy about that especially the way men’s toilets are set up. But like others I’d probably opt for disabled but many are locked.

What about a little boy seeing it or seeing women naked in a women’s changing room ? Naked bodies exist. It’s a fact of life .

JemimaTiggywinkles · Yesterday 11:47

The child goes into the toilet with the parent until they’re old enough to go into the toilet alone. So little boys with mums come into the ladies and little girls with dads go into the men’s. Tho, ime, girls are usually allowed (by the parent) alone into the women’s at younger ages than boys are allowed to use the men’s.

I think you’ve misunderstood. It’s literally the exact opposite of that. Kids too young to use the toilet on their own go to the toilet that matches their parents sex. So mums take boys to the ladies whilst dads take girls to the mens and a woman shouldn’t be in the mens just like a man shouldn’t be in the ladies. No hypocrisy or double standards anywhere.

I don't care, I don't want men in women's toilets. Why should young girls and women particularly those who've experienced trauma have to deal with men in a space where they will feel vulnerable. Do you know what would make women's toilets safe for young girls to use? No men in them

No little girl should have to go in a men's toilet

So you're cool with your little girl going into the ladies or leaving her cubical and encountering a strange man?

Considering that most children don't lock the doors in case they can't get out, I would not be happy with this at all.

Not up to you. Parents will do what they need to do.

No little girl should have to go in a men's toilet

And no man should be in the women's toilets so he should use the disabled one.
